YouTube Remains Web’s Top Video Site

YouTube remains the web’s top destination for video content, according to digital market intelligence firm comScore.

The Google-owned site racked up 147 million unique viewers in May, more than double that of its closest rival VEVO.

The average YouTube user viewed five hours of video in May.

Unfortunately for YouTube, the vast majority of these viewing minutes were of free, user-generated video. Despite multiple attempts over the years, YouTube has been unable to successfully monetize its content.

Outspoken Dallas Mavericks owner and media mogul Mark Cuban is pessimistic that YouTube will ever be able to persuade its users to pay for subscriptions. Said Cuban:

“People won’t pay a subscription fee for any of [YouTube’s content], and most of it will never pay for itself with advertising because most of it will never be seen,”

    I agree with Cuban, I’d never pay to see anything on YouTube.

    It’ll work if they maintain user interest. Free to viewers but will eventually scale up from advertisers.
