UltraVioletIt started out in a storm of scorn, but UltraViolet, the the cloud-based, “buy once, play anywhere” licensing system, seems to be gaining traction. The claim comes from the Digital Entertainment Content Ecosystem (DECE), the consortium behind UltraViolet.

The DECE claims that UltraViolet-enabled movie titles now number nearly 9,000, and that there are about 11 million consumer UV accounts.

Mark Teitell, GM and executive director for the DECE, says the system’s continual enhancements are breaking down consumer entry barriers:

“[Consumer tech support] problems have gone down very pronouncedly in the last six to nine months as we’ve rolled out improvements . . . We’d love it to be zero, but it’s [hit] a pretty low and manageable pace right now.”

Teitell also says that the system is gaining critical mass and momentum as it prepares to launch in more countries this year:

“It means we have a bigger base, where best practices can be shared, and it also means we have more companies that are taking a shot to innovate . . . The rest of the year, and into 2014, will be an exciting time to look back and say, ‘We did a lot in the past 18 months or so,’”

Do you ever make use of the UltraViolet features on the movies you buy?

I have noticed that more titles have ultraviolet and they now allow HD download which was a big reason I had felt like I was starting to think this might be a good thing, where as i felt eh about the SD before. While there are still a few titles you are forced to due on itunes, I try to only due Amazon and UltraViolet now for my digital as I don’t want to log into too many different sites to see my collection

I wonder how many of those 11 million accounts have bought movies other than the ones that come free with Bluray disks. I certainly wouldn’t “buy” anything with DRM. All of these services will shut down eventually, taking the customer’s purchases with them.

I setup a UV account but they won’t play on my phone!!! I have an HTC Sensation 4G and it says it’s incompatible. It plays any of the streaming services like Netflix and Crackle, or You tube. WTF? I guess Hollywood is afraid I will “Steal” their precious movie somehow.

Can I just say what a relief to discover someone who genuinely understands what they’re talking about on the net. You certainly realize how to bring an issue to light and make it important. More people have to look at this and understand this side of the story. I was surprised you’re not more popular because you certainly possess the gift.
