Welcome to another edition of Inside Redbox’s Preview Review, where we recap the movies that will be coming out in theaters this weekend. The goal of this feature is to help you make your weekend movie-watching plans, as well as to note movies that you want to Redbox in a few months when they come out on DVD.
Summer movie season officially kicks off this week with Thor, the first big superhero movie of the year. The only other film that dares challenge this Norse god for box office supremacy is the romantic comedy Something Borrowed. Descriptions and trailers for the wide releases coming out on May 6 are after the jump.
Thor
We’ve all been there: You’re an all-powerful god forced to live among mere mortals after enraging your one-eyed, even more all-powerful father. Chris Hemsworth, who is probably best known for briefly playing Captain Kirk’s dad in Star Trek, wields the hammer and hair extensions of the title character. Fans of the Marvel comic books will especially like the continued tie-ins, first begun in the Iron Man and Incredible Hulk movies, to next summer’s Avengers. Rated PG-13.
Something Borrowed
Ginnifer Goodwin, Kate Hudson and The Office‘s John Krasinski star in this romcom about two friends who fall for the same guy, with hilariously unexpected (and unexpectedly hilarious!) results. It looks like pretty standard romantic comedy fare, which means that 90% of you have already decided (and probably correctly) whether you will love it or loathe it. Rated PG-13.
Also coming out in limited release are the Mel Gibson comeback vehicle The Beaver, Keira Knightley’s Last Night and the awesomely named Hobo with a Shotgun.
Are you planning on seeing any of these films this weekend, Insiders? Let us know in the comments.
I’m curious to see “The Beaver” and “Hobo with a Shotgun” but not enough to actually pay money for them. I think Thor looks like a dud. I’m sure it will do well thanks to the Marvel hype machine, but I can’t find a reason to watch this.
I like the actors in Something Borrowed, but the plot looks like a paint by numbers.
Also, was just going to report i just saw on another trusted site that Redbox has teamed up with Walgreens to offer a free redbox code, good for one day only on Thursday May 12th, for their facebook friends. Just have to ‘like’ them on facebook. You don’t have to buy anything (junk food, etc) to get it. I assume this is different than the free mothers day code you mention. Maybe someone more computer/internet savvy than me can find/report all the exact details of this one-day-only May 12th code as I don’t know if it will be the same code for all, or a unique code. :-)
got my e-mails mix up mothers day code is for the blockbuster kiosk , you are correct i got a e-mail from redbox for may 12th. code from facebook you just like it redbox facebook sorry ;)
After trying this website again. I hadn’t realized what a ghost town this has become. Looking back at the last few pages of topics I believe the topics are averaging about 2 comments per topic. It is officially time to call this site DEAD.
RIP.
