As it gets ready to launch in the UK and Ireland in early 2012, Netflix is getting its content deals in place. The latest major pact is with BBC Worldwide, which will give Netflix such programs as Doctor Who, Top Gear, Little Britain, Torchwood, Miss Marple and Fawlty Towers.

Financial terms of the deal have not been released, but you can bet that Netflix most likely paid a pretty penny for the privilege of streaming some of the BBC’s more popular content.

Netflix’s chief content officer Ted Sarandos said the following about the deal:

“BBC programmes are a big favourite of our over 20 million streaming members in the US, Canada and Latin America . . . We are incredibly proud to make these high-quality programmes available to Netflix members in the UK and Ireland.

Netflix has already stated that it’s overseas expansion is going to cut deeply into its bottom line in the coming years. Is Netflix getting in over its head in the content acquisition game, or is this the price that must be paid for the company to remain competitive?

Netflix has to nail down the best-of-the-past, stood-the test-of-time, in order to front off the Hollywood blackmailers threatening with the latest so-so MIGHT stand the test of time run-of-the-mill pap. So it’s a sophisticated numbers game, aided by the fact that public television doesn’t play the monopolist/oligopolist game.
