TGIF! Every week on “Freebie Friday”, we offer our readers an opportunity to win free prizes. This week, you have a chance to win a free copy of a DVD or Blu-ray of your choice, just by answering a fun question.
One of the big movie industry news stories this week was the continued growth of Blu-ray at the expense of DVD. Proving there is still an interest in physical media purchases for at least some consumers, the Blu-ray format is still showing steady growth.
To enter this week’s giveaway, simply answer the following question in the comments section below:
Have you upgraded from DVD to Blu-ray?
Tell us why you’re sticking with good old (and good enough) DVD. Or tell us why the superior picture and sound of Blu-ray are worth the cost of upgrading your home theater system and media collection.
On Monday the 24th, we will randomly select a winner from the submitted comments.

I can watch blu-ray on my PS3. I am able to get blu-rays that I reserve at the library faster than DVDs because so few people a) have blu-ray players & b)so few people know the library has blu-rays.
we watch most movies with a dvd player but we have a br on our computer
I’m currently sticking to DVD’s because I am on a fixed income and they cost less than blu-rays.
I’m always late to make a switch because of the cost. We spend so much time collecting VHS tapes, then DVDs, and now Blu-Ray comes out. It’s crazy all the money you’re expected to spend just to enjoy your favorite movies. Then, I’m supposed to just start all over again to make a Blu-Ray switch…and then what about the next ‘best thing?’ The cycle starts all over again. I think it’s ridiculous and will wait until the very last minute to switch.
For now we are sticking to Old School DVDs. As we do not own a BlueRay player. We want to switch, but can’t afford the player yet. However, I have noticed the prices are dropping, so maybe I’ll pick one up on Black Friday. BUT, the only movies that I believe are better in BlueRay are action and animal/documentaries. A drama/comedy is still just that…so, why pay the extra for them. That being said I will love it when I can watch Transformers or Plant Earth on BlueRay. Come on Black Friday!!!
We have just switched from DVD to Blu-ray. Our first movie was the new Star Wars movies
No – I’ve actually never seen any movie on blu-ray…..
I have both and I love them both. Blue ray is a must for action etc. What a difference.
The Blue ray look just the same to me, but more expensive, so I am sticking with the old DVD’s for now.
I’ve upgraded my 2 players to Blu-Ray, and occasionally rent on Blu-Ray, but for most movies, DVD is fine by me.
We haven’t upgraded yet due to the cost!
Blu-Ray picture quality is far superiour to DVD. It is easier to rent Blue-Rays than DVDs as not as many people have switched to Blu-Ray. Although the selection is not always as good as with DVD, the picture quality is WELL worth the wait!! The cost of Blu-Ray players is not that great when you consider and weigh the cost with super high picture quality. It is well worth the small cost to upgrade.
BR’s are expensive, besides I didn’t really see a difference between them. Definitely staying with DVD’s as long as I can.
I am making the switch to blu-ray because 1) I can still watch all my old DVDs on the Blu-ray anyway, 2) I enjoy the “i’m in the movie” feel with the higher HD performance, 3) the blu-ray prices have dropped since they first came out and 4) I am able to get blu-rays more often from the library since not many people have blu-ray players yet
I just have not bought one yet but I plan on it for Christmas this year.
Am keeping the dvd for now. I have a number of old vhs movies and have the combo vhs/dvd recorder player on the system. I will eventually go to blu-ray.
The Library has Blu Rays!?!? Yes, I upgraded when I got a new HD TV. I don’t pay the HD premium from the cable company so I only get to enjoy the 1080p from rentals. Once I got the new high definition TV, I felt like I was under utilizing it’s capabilities, so I did buy a BD player. Thank goodness I got one that plays BD-R/BD-RE!
I have upgraded to Blu-ray but I would rather get a reg DVD it is cheaper and I also watch the DVDs on my laptop and it is not Blu-ray so I am not able to do that if I want too. I honestly do not see or really care about the different quality between the two types of DVDs.
I dont own a bluray player at this time for the reason I have a playstation 3 to watch them on. Currently I rent dvds instead of blluray so they can be watched in any room. When one of our dvd players go I will purchase a bluray player possibly a 3d one.
I currently am happy with my old school dvd player. We have a nice HD T.V that provides
A really nice picture. But my husband would definitely like to upgrade to blu-ray.
I’m not quite ready to switch since we own several dvd’s, I don’t want to replace them yet.
In my opinion, I prefer blue-ray over digital video disk. Only a few years back has blue ray technology surfaced, yet it still serves a bigger purpose than a DVD. I like blue rays not just for the playback quality, or the increased amount of storage you can get from using a blue-ray disc, but for it’s picture, definition, & functionality. Also, with blue-rays you can get extended extras like bonus scenes, un-aired footage, & things you wouldn’t find on a DVD.
My dvd machine works fine, why get rid of it? Blu-Ray costs more than dvd so I save money. There is not that much difference between them, as my eyes see.
We have a Samsung bluray player, but usually we just watch dvd’s. I haven’t noticed enough difference in picture quality to make the higher price of bluray worthwhile.
We have two blu-ray players and, with exception to some classic movies on standard DVDs, would not give any consideration whatsoever to purchasing a DVD other than blu-ray. All DVDs we rent are also blu-ray. While additional charges for blu-rays cannot be justified by production costs that are comparable to production costs for conventional DVDs, this is a condition we will have to tolerate until more DVD renters/buyers catch up with the 21st century.
no reason in particular, most of the movies I watch are on cable.
I own a Blu-Ray player, but to be honest I’ve never watched a blu-ray movie on it! DVD is fine for me.
Got a PS3, best bluray player ever. The upgrade cost is not much, what you spend on going to a local bar or club you could get one of those. Picture quality is insane, details that I have never seen on a DVD you see it on Bluray, lets not forget the sound quality is outstanding. Ofcorse if you want to see all that upgrade enhancement from a DVD to a Bluray you need an HD TV. Besides all that quality and picture perfect stuff… unlike DVDs, Bluray discs does not get scratch as easily as a regular disc, that means longer life span on my movie shelf :)
I will stick with the original DVD’s because in my opinion, the upgrade to blueray is just another way to make the consumer keep spending more on the same movie with just a few more options. This is a recession, and we need to be consious and cautious about the way we spend during these times.
Thanks to the greatly enhanced HD video and audio quality as well as the advanced interactivity and networking features, Blu-ray represents a huge leap forward in the DVD viewing experience and offer an unprecedented HD experience. BD are completely worth the additional expense, tolerate handling by toddlers and less likely to scratch or wear down after being viewed over and over.
I upgraded to Blu-Ray when I bought a PS3. I prefer Blu-Ray to DVD however I still buy both. I try not to double-dip anymore but if I don’t already own a title on DVD or Blu-Ray I will usually opt for the Blu-Ray if it has a good transfer and HD audio.
Still only DVD’s. I don’t even have cable/satellite. I just found out about netflix about 2 months ago and I’ve saved so much just with that vs. redbox. Can’t justify blu ray yet.
Upgraded for one reason – streaming!
Although plain old regular dvd is good enough for me, when available i get the blueray version(especially at the redbox!) I didn’t have to upgrade since i have a ps3 but i also have a regular dvd player. I find that blueray disc last longer(harder to scratch) and you don’t get the skipping around like on older dvd’s that get scratched up from use. So blueray it is! for now… :/
No blu-ray for me yet… maybe when the price drops.
I have two BR and Two DVD players, the BR player show such a great picture but sometimes picture quality isn’t important. When I rent movies I rent DVD (saves a few bucks) but when I buy movies I buy BR. If you can’t see the difference check your TV (HDTV) and cables (HDMI) because it’s a huge difference.
I’m bloody cheap! I don’t have a play station or blue ray on my laptop and my laptop is usually where I watch movies. I did see Batman on blueray at a friend’s house… it blew me away… but when I opened my wallet, my wallet began crying so I just kept my laptop dvd drive.
I’ll upgrade when I HAVE to (when everything is virtual and blueray is so cheap they’re giving them away.
til then… I’ll just stay with “ok” not “FAN TAS TIC!!!!”
I have upgraded from my regular play-all dvd player to a PS3 Blue Ray Player
I really love Blu-Ray since many are made with 7.1 sound tracks which is the system I use actually it,s 7.2 . Its makes a difference you can hear. Besides the clear picture . Animated movies reaaly look great ..
I have no real interest in the “extra” stuff Blu-Ray offers over DVD. When my DVD player dies though, I’ll probably switch to Blu-Ray.
No and no plans to do so unless DVDs go the way of Beta and VCR
