TGIF! Every week on “Freebie Friday”, we offer our readers an opportunity to win free prizes. This week, you have a chance to win a free copy of a DVD or Blu-ray of your choice, just by answering a fun question.

One of the big movie industry news stories this week was the continued growth of Blu-ray at the expense of DVD. Proving there is still an interest in physical media purchases for at least some consumers, the Blu-ray format is still showing steady growth.

To enter this week’s giveaway, simply answer the following question in the comments section below:

Have you upgraded from DVD to Blu-ray?

Tell us why you’re sticking with good old (and good enough) DVD. Or tell us why the superior picture and sound of Blu-ray are worth the cost of upgrading your home theater system and media collection.

On Monday the 24th, we will randomly select a winner from the submitted comments.

I just bought a Sony upconverting Blu-Ray player two days ago and we love it. DVDs pop and Blu-Rays are amazing. Coupled with the 1080p LCD I just got, it looks 3d when it is not even 3d? Amazing.
I can’t wait to get the new Star Wars releases and Avatar. We purchased Corpse Bride and Green Lantern on Blu-Ray. They look awesome!

We are happy with DVD’s, just can’t afford the added expense to upgrade to Blu-Rays.

I have upgraded to a blu-ray player, but don’t buy blu-ray movies. The player does a super job of playing DVD’s so didn’t see the need to spend the extra for blu-rays.

We have a PS3 Blu-Ray player. Regular DVDs work just great. Blu-Ray’s look awesome. Now if only I had a sound system.

We did upgrade to Blu-ray but only because we had to buy a new TV, so we went all out and purchased an entire home theatre system. And our disc player plays BOTH DVD and Blu-ray. We don’t buy as many Blu-rays as we did DVDs, though.

I use dvds because I have an old tube tv. Someday i’ll probably upgrade, but I have watched a few blue rays and it doesn’t excite me too much to pay extra for the movies.

When I watch blue ray dvds on a HD large screen tv it is certainly awesome. I however, cannot afford the upgrade right now and am quite satisfied with watching reguar DVDs on my old box type tv. I don’t like having to pay more for some new DVD releases just because it contains the regular and blueray discs.

I am getting a blu-ray player not so much for the better picture (my upscaling DVD player does a good job with the video) but for the improved sound. To me, the audio is as important as the video and the high quality audio that Blu-Ray provides is a deal maker. I’m also getting a player that can play 3D blu-ray just in case I ever buy a 3D capable TV.

We use both DVD and blue ray. We bought a blue ray player a couple of years ago because it offered streaming as well. Love the quality of blue ray but the affordability of DVDs.

We recently bought a Samsung BluRay player for relatively cheap. WE LOVE THE UPGRADE. So worth it! Our TV is only 720p, but my eye clearly sees a difference with everything! Plus it’s not like we have to scrap all our DVD’s. The BluRay player plays both DVD’s and BD’s, so when we buy new movies, it’s the combo pack… especially the pack with digital copy so it can go right into iTunes and sync with the iPad.

A blueray player is so expensive! I don’t really see a difference anyway. Dvds are just fine with me..

I have a PS3 and been getting Bluray movies whenever it’s 10 bucks or less, or the really good releases at 15 bucks max… Love the Hi-Def.

I still watch the regular dvds. I have a lot of them. The blue rays are way too expensive. In this economy you have to pinch pennies. I don’t think I’ll ever switch to blue ray. If I want to see higher definition I would rather watch it at a movie theater. A movie ticket costs less than a blue ray disc.

I prefer VHS was that in the question? VCRs are still my way of DVRing something :) Okay sorry old school is the way for me so I would say DVD. I haven’t watched many Blue Ray movies and am still loving the sound and picture quality of DVDs.

I bought a blu-ray last tax season, along with a new 1080p lcd tv. I won’t go back to just a plain old dvd player now. The picture difference is too amazing. I haven’t converted my entire library to blu-ray yet, but I will.

DVD’s! I have a lot of them and barely make the rent along with my other bills for the month, I don’t have the flow to upgrade my entertainment system at the moment. Blu-ray and Hi-Def is definitely preferrable, but gotta stick with the golden oldies for the time being.

Dvd. My family doesn’t buy enough movies to make buying a bluray player worth it.

Blu-Ray of course! Nothing like it! if you haven’t tried it you should, the picture quality is awesome!

I have upgraded to blu-ray but I don’t have a nice T.V. that will accept HDMI cables, so I don’t get the full use out of my blu-ray player.

I have both regular and blue ray. Most of my regular dvds look fantastic so I don’t really need blue ray. I only buy blue ray when there is something really good to see. Avatar was a good blue ray quality wise but a lousy story. Sound does not count to me as long as I can hear the words. Sound is the most over rated part of movies.

I have to say after working at walmart some time putting up new releases.

That The cost of blu-rays have dropped some bit.

IN some cases. They even toss in all 3 disc for the same price as what the dvd would cost.

You get blu ray. dvd, and the digital Copy .

What got me hooked the first time was watching batman. I was hooked from that point on. They are not as dark as normal dvds .

Thanks again for the wonderful job you all do. and everyone that leaves comments.

My husbands work gave him a bluray player last year for christmas. Haven’t bought any blurays but borrowed some from the library. With 2 special needs kids and our budget I would not have been able to buy one. Got such a great price on a 61″ tv just before Superbowl a couple of years ago anything looks awesome

No. Unfortunately, we do not have as much time to watch DVDs as we once did. When we get back to having that luxury again, we will look for sales on the blue ray players.

We love our DVD, have no intention to upgrade to Blu-Ray. My 2 & 3 yr olds watch VHS and DVD movies every day.

We bought a Sony Blu-Ray DVD player and love it. Though in light of increased prices for Blu-Ray DVDs (rentals and otherwise) we relegate Blu-Ray usage to movies like Avatar etc where Blu-Ray greatly enhances the special effects and overall movie viewing experience. Regular DVDs are rented for the rest of the genre due to price and the fact Blu-Ray greatly enhances this viewing experience as well…:D.
