TGIF! Every week on “Freebie Friday”, we offer our readers an opportunity to win free prizes. This week, you have a chance to win a free copy of a DVD or Blu-ray of your choice, just by answering a fun question.

One of the big movie industry news stories this week was the continued growth of Blu-ray at the expense of DVD. Proving there is still an interest in physical media purchases for at least some consumers, the Blu-ray format is still showing steady growth.

To enter this week’s giveaway, simply answer the following question in the comments section below:

Have you upgraded from DVD to Blu-ray?

Tell us why you’re sticking with good old (and good enough) DVD. Or tell us why the superior picture and sound of Blu-ray are worth the cost of upgrading your home theater system and media collection.

On Monday the 24th, we will randomly select a winner from the submitted comments.

I don’t see the need to pay extra for bonus features. The few blue ray’s I have don’t appear to be much different from the DVD version of the same movie.

I’m with you Sonya….The only movie I can see a real difference in is AVATAR…. It was worth the extra expense…..same for 3-D….”Journey to the center of the Earth…” was spectacular……Thor, X-men, and Transformers….not so much

we are a DVD family the way technology changes so quickly we have not changed for finanical reasons. Not able to buy all new movies with every change. I was bad enough changing from VHS tapes to DVDs.

We own so many DVD’s that it would cost way to much to upgrade to Blueray. We’re more than broke with no jobs at the moment. Renting redbox is even getting to be a treat.

I haven’t upgraded to a blu-ray player yet but would like to. I feel like I already pay enough to buy DVD’s, and I know blu-rays are going to cost me more. At this rate, I think the future of watching tv and movies is in downloading and streaming, not in owning a disc.

Think you’re right. Wait a bit for the future…too expensive to convert to blu-ray now anyway. Still have stacks and stacks of VHS!

I own a 1st generation Sony BluRay that takes a while to warm up, and still love it. I do not however, buy BluRays. I will rent them. My other upconvert DVD players do a great job with good old DVD. Even the DVD player in my car does a fantastic job delivering funnies and action flicks for the kids!

I havent upgraded, I just dont see enough difference between the two. I also have about 800 dvds that are in perfect condition so no need to upgrade.

We own quite a few DVDs plus we enjoy viewing them on our laptops when away from home. Upgrading will happen for us only when replacement is necessary, not just to spend/waste money on the newest toy.

We are projecting onto a 150-inch screen at home, so Blu-Ray seemed necessary for a quality viewing experience. Occasionally, I start asking why the quality is so bad before I realize the kids put in a DVD. Apparently, you can tell the difference once you get spoiled on Blu :)

It cost more money to have a blue ray and the DVDs are also more

my husband wanted a bluray……i didn’t, but i will say i can definately tell a difference and love it…..when we buy movies we buy the combo dvd/bluray disc’s, it is only a couple of dollars more and the quality is worth it!!!!! i am hoping there are going to be some great deals at christmas time on bluray players because we would like to buy another one!!

No and I have NO PLAN to do so either. By the way…what happened to the FREE RENTAL of MONDAY or THURSDAY I used to get on my cellphone??

I’m split between the two. My main TV is only 720p and my blu-ray player can upconvert DVDs to a quality that is almost indistinguishable from blu-ray on that tv. However, if I really love a particular movie, or the price difference isn’t that much (I’ve found some blu-rays selling for the same price as their DVD counterpart) I’ll opt for the blu-ray version. I may only see a difference when I take them to a friend’s house, but I like knowing that when I finally upgrade my TV I’ll have a collection started. Then again, who can pass up on those $5 movie bins?

I have never watched a bluray but would love to, still have the dvd player but at least all the vcr’s are gone from my house

I will not upgrade due to finances. I have a few of the regular blue rays but I don’t a any difference from my regular dvds.

Not yet upgraded…have just started using Redbox more since I droped Netflix and havent gravitated yet to the new and improved anything,.

I’m sticking to regular dvd’s due to the cost right now. There’s too much of a cost difference for the hardware and the media. When the prices come down more, maybe I’ll switch then.

I have an awesome home theatre system, and I can’t justify the cost of upgrading to a blue ray player right now, but would not turn down one for free!

I still watch dvd’s on a tube TV and although the picture quality appears better, it doesn’t seem important to me.

I have not upgraded yet. Technology changes so fast that I am waiting for the “next best thing”, while being cost conscience.

We upgraded our DVD player to bluray, but are not upgrading any existing DVDs to bluray. Future DVD purchases will likely be in bluray though. When we rent from Redbox, we look for bluray first.

The cost of upgrading existing DVDs is not worth the payoff. There are only a very few titles I have that I might even consider upgrading, but will likely not do so.

Honestly can’t tell one bit of a difference between blue ray and regular DVDs. We have a high def TV and I expected more from the blue ray DVDs which we rent (I prefer not buying them as long as I can rent them). We have a Sony blue ray player, but I don’t get what all the hype is. Maybe it’s just me.

Blu-ray looks amazing but to upgrade would mean to change not only disc format but TV, player, and budget. With UltraViolet and online rental/streaming options becoming increasingly more common it is likely even Blu-ray would be old by the time I would be ready to change from DVD. Additionally, after having built a large VHS collection only to see it outdated relatively quickly, I will never again build a media collection library.

I added a blu-ray player but am mostly renting as opposed to purchasing any blu-ray media. I will probably stick with DVD for a bit longer.

We have not updated to Blu-ray. Just not worth the extra cost to us.

I’ll keep the DVD until it breaks, then I’ll get the Blu-ray. My frugal parents are FINALLY rubbing off on me!

have not upgraded. Between the cost of the player and paying twice the cost for movie that I can still buy on DVD, I dont plan on it any time soon.

I tend to stick with DVD’s because I already own so many, plus in my opinion blu-ray does not inhance the picture quality all that well. The only movie I could “REALLY” see a difference in was Avatar.

We upgraded to a Home Theatre system after 10 years with a big screen projection TV. Got a BluRay player at the same time and love it! The depth of field is so much better and the clarity and color is worth the price. Regular DVDs look better on the new TV but there is a definite change for the better with a BluRay disc.

Blu-ray offers much better sound and video quality. I don’t usually care so much about the add-ons that they use to sell Blu-ray, but for me the real value comes from how much clearer the picture and audio are… hands down winner!

My brother has a Blue-Ray and I CAN tell the difference in viewing when I watch his DVDs. My hubby and I are putting our children through college and aslo took in a family member that is in poor health. We have the “old style” DVD player, but I would love to have the Blue Ray.

I received a blu-ray as a gift and watched movies on it and did not really notice a difference in the picture. We had a storm and the blu-ray (even being off) got sapped by lightening and so we when back to the dvd player. I don’t have a newer tv so that might have something to do with the picture quality being the same, so I will stay with the dvd’s that play just fine for me.

We own so many dvds that we wont upgrade anytime soon. Between the price of the blu-ray player and the amount of the discs -we can still get dvds for so cheap it just isnt worth it for us right now.

The substantial cost-to-upgrade compared with the small gain-in-benefit just doesn’t make it worthwhile to move from (old) DVD to Blu-Ray.

I’m sticking with my DVD’s. It costs way too much to upgrade and for what? If I can see my movie, then I’m happy. :-)
