TGIF! Every week on “Freebie Friday”, we offer our readers an opportunity to win free prizes. This week, you have a chance to win a free copy of a DVD or Blu-ray of your choice, just by answering a fun question.
One of the big movie industry news stories this week was the continued growth of Blu-ray at the expense of DVD. Proving there is still an interest in physical media purchases for at least some consumers, the Blu-ray format is still showing steady growth.
To enter this week’s giveaway, simply answer the following question in the comments section below:
Have you upgraded from DVD to Blu-ray?
Tell us why you’re sticking with good old (and good enough) DVD. Or tell us why the superior picture and sound of Blu-ray are worth the cost of upgrading your home theater system and media collection.
On Monday the 24th, we will randomly select a winner from the submitted comments.

I have a ps3 & I sometimes use it to watch blue ray. Although the blue day players have gone down in price, I feel like the blue ray DVD are still pretty expensive. I’ve decided to hold on to my regular DVD player that works really good, plus I’m streaming more movies.
Our conversion to blu-ray has been because of the multi pack ie. digital ,dvd and blu-ray all in one pack
Blu-ray is a must for HD TVs! Can’t go back to DVDs.
I have a PS3, so I honestly use a lot of both. I usually rent DVD’s because they are cheaper, but if there’s something I really need to buy, I usually buy the Blu-Ray if possible.
I am sticking with DVD’s simply because my TV is an older model. Even if I had a newer TV I don’t think the quality would be much different.
DVD. Too broke to upgrade to Blu-Ray just yet. Maybe on Black Friday?
I prefer to stay with “good ‘ole” DVD’s for several reasons. One being I already own approximately 150 movies which I love to watch on occasion. Secondly, the changing out of players and movies is an added expense which no one really can warrant. Third, I have never had any issue with great quality I get from my DVD’s and those I rent from Redbox. This process is so easy and customer friendly that shy of something drastic like all players stopped working and DVD’s disappeared, I would not change to Blue Ray.
well of course we have upgraded …got to keep up with the Jones’
I do not have any HD tv’s, so I see no need to upgrade to blu-ray yet
Blu-ray disks – on PS3 and dedicated blu-ray players…
Good ole DVD for me, not worth the money, can’t see that much difference.
we use both, but I don’t really feel that Blu-Ray is worth the money. I don’t care about all that other junk that comes with Blu-Ray. as long as I can see the movie, I’m good.
I switched almost two years ago. Love the better quality & now Blu-Ray gets more extras than the regular DVD’s. Just for that reason why not switch?
i have made the big move to blu-ray even though i dont think it is a big move at all, i think everyone one should have in, and pretty soon dvd will be obsolete, the picture is amazing, and especially with a good tv, in looks even awesomer…lol i know awesomer is not a word, but a great made up word to describe blu-ray :) :O)
Have not upgraded – once the cost is on par with DVD’s then I’ll think about it.
For me, a regular dvd player in fine but then I need to replace it, then I’ll upgrade!
I have a perfectly good DVD player so at this time, I do not wish to upgrade, however, when my current DVD player does bite the dust, I will upgrade to a Blue-ray.
I haven’t upgraded since my current DVD player works just fine. Once it dies, I’ll upgrade. I have upgraded my parents’ system, though.
I like regular DVd I also have a ps3 but we just use it for games
Nope and don’t plan on upgrading anything till forced to do so! We still have an old fashioned big clunky tube TV that’s 20 years old and still works! Imagine that!
It’s pretty simple. I was and am a dvd fan. I love actually owning the physical medium and seeing my collection grow one disc at a time. Yeah streaming is cool, and digital files may not require much in terms of space, but you can’t display them. I have no desire to upgrade my existing collection, so since blu plays dvd, I’m sticking with the physical media as long as I can.
I began my upgrade to blu-ray this year. I don’t have the high def TV yet, so I don’t have the player for them either, but I do own about 20 films on blu-ray now. it’s an eventuality at this point. I will have both before the year ends. So for now I’m a dvd guy, but in a couple months, I’ll be blu.
I recently bought a Blue Ray and frankly don’t see much of a change in the picture to make a difference to me. I don however think it is worth it to be able to access Netflix DVD’s
I use a PS3 for my media. Most of the time if I rent it is standard format however if I buy it is Blu Ray. The thing is most come with digital copy so I put that on my hard drive and never bother with the dvds at all and use the media player.
sticking with dvds ….don’t see much differences with blue-ray.
Love Blu-Ray, the quality is amazing and the online features are fantastic.
Most of my collection is DVD. There aren’t many movies worth purchasing in the Blu-Ray format. Only the movies with stunning visual effects are worth the expenditure In my opinion.
We have a ps3 and sometimes watch blue ray on it. We only buy blue ray if they are on sale.
The cost of Blu-ray discs are still high in comparison to DVD’s.
However, my recent purchase of a 55″ HDTV made it a necessity to get a Blu-ray player. The picture is far superior. I now only buy movies I really really like on Blu-ray. The $5 DVD’s are just fine for all the rest of movies. I hope the cost of Blu-ray starts to come down soon.
move to blueray gives movies more clarity and longevity of disc without scratchesI. Its likegoing from a regular TV to upgraded HD
Blu-ray looks amazing on a HD t.v. and usually has great extras or interactives
and when we buy the Blu-ray it comes with a regular dvd edition of the movie, which I give to my mom who’s perfectly happy with old technology.
haven’t updated yet, but will one day.
We use blue-ray every chance we get. We love the sharpness of the picture and the special effects are way better.
I needed to replace a low quality DVD player and bought a BluRay that upconverts DVD’s. I can’t tell the difference in picture or sound between BluRay and DVD. I still buy DVD because of the price.
Um short and sweet answer is I’m CHEAP – My satellite service supplied me with my DVD player – so as soon as I win a Blue Ray or the company offers me 1 for next to nothing then I will get 1 I guess. My laptop plays blue rays – and to be honest I have never watched 1 yet.
I made the switch three years ago. I love the many options that the blu-ray allows you to access that DVD doesn’t. On occasion we still rent DVD, but anytime I want all the SFX and ultimate home theater experience, blu-ray is always the choice
We have not upgraded yet. Perhaps we will consider it when we need a new DVD player. Is it worth the cost? Hard to say.
DVDs are fine with me, have a great HDTV and get a great picture and don’t think I am missing a thing by not having Blu Ray.
I have watched blue-ray disc and see very little differance in the standard disc certianly not enough to warrant the additional cost of a blue-ray player….but I will purchase one someday.
I didn’t switch to BlueRay because of the bullsh*t tactics the companies behind it took to nudge it to the forefront.
We use both dvd and blu-ray to cover all current packaged media. Although due to the demands of HDTV for better picture and sound, we are getting the majority of them in blu-ray from now on. The extras provided in the authoring process of blu-ray are much more fun than dvds, in addition to having the 3D option too! Btw, most blu-ray players do upscale the video very well, so older dvds will look better until the day all are replaced with blu-ray discs.
