TGIF! Every week on “Freebie Friday”, we offer our readers an opportunity to win free prizes. This week, you have a chance to win a free copy of a DVD or Blu-ray of your choice, just by answering a fun question.
One of the big movie industry news stories this week was the continued growth of Blu-ray at the expense of DVD. Proving there is still an interest in physical media purchases for at least some consumers, the Blu-ray format is still showing steady growth.
To enter this week’s giveaway, simply answer the following question in the comments section below:
Have you upgraded from DVD to Blu-ray?
Tell us why you’re sticking with good old (and good enough) DVD. Or tell us why the superior picture and sound of Blu-ray are worth the cost of upgrading your home theater system and media collection.
On Monday the 24th, we will randomly select a winner from the submitted comments.

I have both a DVD player and a ps3 that we use for a bluray player. I also have a VHS player hooked up with those units. I do my best to allow all media to be played in my family room.
Yep last month and Samsung Blu-ray player Rocks!!!
Upgraded to Blue Ray 2 yrs ago, now need to upgrade for the WIFY ones so that I can stream movies online too…
We just purchased a plasma tv and a PS3. Honestly the plasma is so good it’s hard to tell a hi def from regular dvd. Avatar was an exception.
Nope, my dvd player works great still and I know that blurays still have some price reducing to do like dvd players did. I have patience…
Can’t see buying a new TV when this one works just fine, lets do the math, new tv plus blu-ray player plus cost of blu-ray rentals equals…..if I had this much money I’d definitely have enough to pay off some old bills and get caught up this current financial crisis that we are all in
I have a trini sony tube 1080i tv that despite its 32″ size outshines most flat screens I’ve seen and I went with an LGbluray player that upconverts standard dvd and plays my blurays. even at this size bluray makes a big impression but those 70″ screen are giving me screen envy!
I have not upgraded to Blu-ray because I do not have high def TV.
No way, my DVD player also has a VHS player in it so I can play all the movies I have right now, no need to upgrade to Blue Ray…at least not yet…
My old DVD player gave out, so as long as I was getting a new player, decided to get a Blu-ray.
Have not upgraded to blu-ray player. Have alot of DVDs and VCR tapes
I still watch.
no I have not upgraded yet, can’t afford too! With the economy the way it is. I’ve been unemployed for 14 mos! Maybe Obama will give the poor one for xmas!!!!
I’m planning to stay with the DVD version. Don’t feel any need (especially financially) to change to Blu-ray.
I upgraded mainly so I could stream movies online.
Got my husband blu ray for Christmas. Cant wait to try it out. He will be surprised!
I could care less about “the latest” in video technology, but it will keep advancing & we’ll keep buying the products. I’d be perfectly happy with Beta tapes still, if we were never shown something better. Ignorance is bliss :)
Sticking with DVD, for now. When it comes to new technology, I find being on the new product trailing edge is easier and cheaper. Let someone else pay the big bucks and suffer the inevitable bumps in the hardware/software road.
And streaming video is what I now do most anyway.
I have multiple blu-ray players (no-dvd) and all new movie purchases are on blu-ray. However, I’ll still have a vast DVD library that I have no intention of “upgrading” and I redbox DVDs, just because they are cheaper.
i stilll have good ol regular dvd player. would like to get a blueray just dont have the money for that right now:)
I love new technology and I love the quality and extra features of Blu-ray but, in all honesty, I bought my BR player in order to get streaming capabilities in our bedroom. I have a large DVD collection and was always afraid that once I got my first BR player, I’d end up replacing all my DVDs. Surprisingly enough, I have been really picky about the BR discs I buy. I’ve only bought 5 in the past year with 3 of them being Combo Packs (BR and DVD) and all of them being movies that I really feel benefit from the BR technology. I was at a store yesterday that was selling BR discs for $7.99 and I looked through them and quickly realized that I didn’t need any of those films on BR. Do I love ‘Caddyshack’? Absolutely. Do I need it on Blu-ray when I already have it on DVD? Nope.
I have a PS3 which I use to play DVDs and Blu-Rays.
We’re sticking with DVDs. Not really worth it to me to buy Blue Ray discs when the DVD is good enough. We do have a PS3 to watch Blue Ray on, if needed. But not upgrading the TV either for the full effect. DVDs are just as great in our household.
It’s hard to tell a blueray from regular dvd.
I haven’t upgraded to blu-ray because of the cost. Dvds are still good for me.
Bluray is undoubtedly better in quality, and the player plays old DVD’s. It’s a win until we’ve all got affordable & current streaming content.
I have an older Bluray player, and the firmware updates are SLOW in keeping up with new movies’ new features… that’s the only drawback.
I haven’t yet upgraded but I am looking forward to an upgrade soon. I believe the picture quality is much better with Blue ray and can’t wait to get blue ray and the six movie star wars set on blue ray.
Yes for two years, been using a sonyblu-ray and upgraded to wifi model last year for streaming. No regrets:)
Our DVD player recently died and we wanted to be able to watch Netflix on our TV so we purchased a Blue Ray player. We also get cheap videos at the library and there are always more choices of Blue Ray available, because not that many people have players yet. We love the quality!
no but i may in the future
The second I got an HDTV I also bought a Blu Ray player. If I am going to buy a movie I buy it on Blu Ray. As far as rentals go I am fine with DVDs.
There is nothing wrong with DVDs. I don’t see the point of updrading to blue-ray yet. Perhabs, when the price of blu-ray player comes down. If it’s not broken don’t fix it.
I like the better quality that Blu-ray offers and have upgraded to it.
I have both regular and bluray. I did not see a use in throwing away perfectly good dvd players, heck I still have a VCR somewhere.
My bluray rental is about 10%.
I have not upgraded – my family does not have hi-def tv’s either, so it would really be pointless at this time.
I still watch Dvds, waiting til blue ray prices go further down
Im still roughing it out with my old DVD player because once I switch I’ll need a brand new home theater system. My financial priorities at the moment won’t allow for such purchase. The variable that could alter my priorities however is if any of my toddlers would break my DVD. Then I’d be at Best Buy with my credit card to get the Blu-Ray cream of the crop entertainment system.
Blu-ray kicks butt!….picture and sound is amazing. Action movies rock in Blu-ray and I can’t go back to regular DVD.
I rock out my PS3 for Blu-ray’s and dvd’s more than I use it for gaming, so yes I have upgraded too.
Sticking with DVD because they are cheaper. But not cheaper then free Blu-Ray DVD :>
No, unfortunately not yet! Since I own 200+ DVD’s, I just can’t bring myself to get a BluRay player just yet. Maybe after school is over I’ll splurge!
