TGIF! Every week on “Freebie Friday”, we offer our readers an opportunity to win free prizes. This week, you have a chance to win a free copy of a DVD or Blu-ray of your choice, just by answering a fun question.
One of the big movie industry news stories this week was the continued growth of Blu-ray at the expense of DVD. Proving there is still an interest in physical media purchases for at least some consumers, the Blu-ray format is still showing steady growth.
To enter this week’s giveaway, simply answer the following question in the comments section below:
Have you upgraded from DVD to Blu-ray?
Tell us why you’re sticking with good old (and good enough) DVD. Or tell us why the superior picture and sound of Blu-ray are worth the cost of upgrading your home theater system and media collection.
On Monday the 24th, we will randomly select a winner from the submitted comments.

Yes a long time ago when I bought my PS3.
I have both and my blue-ray player up-converts DVDs and does a pretty good job making my DVD collection very watch-able.
Once you go Blu, you never go back! A lot of Blu-Ray discs don’t even cost a lot now, in fact I’ve seen some movies on Blu selling for LESS than the DVD!
I have almost every format though- HD-DVD, D-VHS, Beta, laserdisc, 8mm, and CED videodisc! But when you watch a lot of stuff on regular DVD or an older format, then watch a Blu-Ray or HD-DVD (or HD-VHS, even though that format’s long dead) the effect is like getting a new pair of glasses!
Was just given a blu-ray player for Father’s Day. Still have 3 DVD players in house too. I still buy DVDs unless an action movie, then prefer to buy Blu-Ray.
I have DVD but would love to upgrade to bluray if I could. Picture is amazing!!!
We haven’t switched yet, perhaps when our Sony DVD player dies!
Yes, I have switched on one of My tv’s… the large one in the living room; upstairs is still DVD. I do enjoy the versatility of the blue ray… and I hope that as they become even more popular … or manufacturer priority ,… prices will drop. As with Chuck, My blue ray converts My dvds…
Had DVD for years and needed to replace the tv in our den. Store had a deal for the HD 3D Samsung with Blu-ray bundle plus MvA in 3D for same price as the non-3D HDTV we wanted. Now we have both DVD and Blu-ray and can choose format when we buy or rent movies.
Of course, hasn’t everyone with a hd television?
I cannot tell the difference – it is just another way to get money from consumers. I actually wish they would come out with another less fragile and smaller medium.
yes i have, i use my ps3 more for blu rays than for games.
Have one Blu-ray and several DVD players (including one for the car). When I buy new movies, I opt for the Blu-ray combo packs.
The cost of Blue ray is not worth the upgrade. So many movies are just average not deserving the price difference to upgrade. Dvd is great for the price.
It’s a bad economy out there and buyers want value. If you want the top of the line go for it.
I can’t imagine the cost difference between a blu-ray and dvd is worth it. The sound and picture of dvd’s are just fine…i still use my vcr on occasion…lol. have a great weekend everyone!
we will use the dvd till it die’s before we go and buy a blue ray. the blue ray is still to expensive for our blood. thank’s josh
I have not converted over to Blu-Ray yet. My tv isn’t HD and I can’t justify switching over until it bites the dust (hopefully not anytime soon). I LOVE the clearer views and everything about it, but I’m being responsible ;)
No upgrades here. Blu-ray is still waaaaaaaay too expensive.
I do not have blue ray player. Hard to compare.
I still use original DVDs and play them thru Xbox not even a true DVD player! I’m waiting to upgrade later when I can build dedicated movie room in my house.
No Blu-ray at my house; we don´t see a need for it. We have a dvd player, and I´m seriously considering purchasing a used vcr at Goodwill, since vcr tapes are so inexpensive (get them for 50 cents at the thrift store) — or free to rent at the library (same as dvd and Blu-ray, of course). I tend to hold out on new technologies until the difference between them and the old technology is actually noticeable. For example, I have had the same little phone for almost 3 years now — unheard of among some of my friends! lol
I upgraded to Blu ray because of the great quality. I only watch action and children movies on Blu ray as all others can be viewed on non-Blu ray.
We have a few blue rays that we can no longer play since our PS3 got broken but I didn’t notice the difference when we would watch them.
My kids have DVD players in each of their rooms but the main TV in our house has a PS3 which uses BR. So, yes, we have converted but not completely.
We have a PS3 that plays blu rays.
I have upgraded several dvd to Blu Ray , and also to 3D format. great picture on the upgrade
I haven’t switched to blu-ray, but I have seen some :)
Yes, we did this when Avatar came out, after we saw it in 3D. Fabulous!!
When I buy a movie I prefer to spend my money on the highest quality product. If I’m renting a movie I’m not sure is good or not, I’ll rent the DVD first then maybe purchase the blue ray later
I still use DVD, but may upgrade to Blu-Ray soon as it gets cheaper.
No haven’t upgraded.
Blu-Ray is not worth the extra money to me yet, so I’m sticking with DVD for now.
No, did not go from DVD to blu-ray because the DVD’s are more affordable.
My boyfriend along with the purchase of a playstation 3 is now why I prefer bluray. Not only is the picture quality an obvious difference so is the sound quality. It’s very impressive.
I already opt for the combo DVD/Blu-ray packs but have not upgraded to Blu-ray player yet. Prices are coming down a bit now on them, so hopefully soon. I do not have enough of the discs to notice any difference, I’m a Redox renter!
We have a bluray player, but still rent dvd cuz it’s cheaper.
I would love to upgrade but honestly I’m too cheap! That’s probably why I love this website!
Have not switched yet …. not worth the extra money right now but maybe once we HAVE to buy a new player. And only then if it will change my old DVD’s to play on a blu-ray.
I still have DVDs and enjoy them. I expect at some point I might consider buying a blueray player, but for now I’m sticking with DVD. It’s more affordable and we have hundreds of DVDs. So for now I don’t have a need to switch.
still have DVDs and love them….no need to switch yet
definitely worth the switch to blu-ray
