TGIF! Every week on “Freebie Friday”, we offer our readers an opportunity to win free prizes. This week, you have a chance to win a free copy of a DVD or Blu-ray of your choice, just by answering a fun question.
One of the big movie industry news stories this week was the continued growth of Blu-ray at the expense of DVD. Proving there is still an interest in physical media purchases for at least some consumers, the Blu-ray format is still showing steady growth.
To enter this week’s giveaway, simply answer the following question in the comments section below:
Have you upgraded from DVD to Blu-ray?
Tell us why you’re sticking with good old (and good enough) DVD. Or tell us why the superior picture and sound of Blu-ray are worth the cost of upgrading your home theater system and media collection.
On Monday the 24th, we will randomly select a winner from the submitted comments.

I am sticking with DVD partly because I cannot afford a Blu-Ray player but also because I see no reason to change. I am satisfied with the visual and auditory quality of DVD. With a standard-definition TV from the 90s, I can’t see Blu-Ray making any big improvements. More and more DVD rentals coming without special features is a bit annoying but not enough so to make me want to get Blu-Ray (or buy the DVDs, for that matter).
Danielle girl I am “you” right now!!!!!!! Blu-Ray? Huh? OK so I’m not that primitive; I know what one is and I would love to be a part of the Blue-Ray phenom. But it is high! And I’m ol’ skool as well. I am TIRED of having to learn a new device when the old one is still not totally hooked up properly. I think in some instances technology is annoying and overrated, TO ME. I respect all the Techies who are able to move & shake when the newest gadget hits the market. I admire those who are anally challenged enough to camp out at a facility in order to be one of or THE first to have technology’s latest creation! You go with your bad selves! It is just not that serious for me. Now when can someone come over to hook my 8 track to my surround sound? LOL! Whatevah!
I always wanted the best technology. I loved VHS when I was a kid, when I heard DVD was coming out I bought into laserdisc just to have something exciting to do before and I was very excited about Blu-ray because it was HD and widescreen. Once prices got fair in 2009 I really started to go crazy. I would definitely say including gifts I have bought about 400 titles so far. The only DVD’s I have are old tv shows that probably won’t be relased on Blu-ray and a select few $5 bin movies which will quickly become library donations if they come out on Blu-ray. It’s kind of a shame that people want to settle with dvd, to me it’s liking a flower right before it blooms.
I haven’t upgraded yet. Cost is the biggest thing prohibiting me. You need not just the player, but also the sound system and HDTV (have neither) to get anything out of the better quality. Also, the discs themselves are more expensive.
Ditto! NOT EVERYone KNOWS that, yes indeed, not ONLY is the equip. EXPEN$IVE,so IS the disc’s themselve’s! All of us that rent from Redbox KNOW! (.50cents MORE per rental!)
Sticking with DVD…..Don’t see the need to spend the extra $$$ on blu-ray when carpet and siding for the house are needed much more urgently.
Blue-ray hands down. Picture quality of Blue-ray blows away that of The DVD. No comparison!
I am in the process of upgrading to Blu-ray. The cost of blu-rays have come down and there are features that you cant get on DVD, like 3D. Cant wait to get my new TV to start enjoying the best blu-ray has to offer.
I would rather watch a Blu-Ray DVD movie. The picture quality is so much better. We have a PS3 that doubles as a Blu-Ray player, so we’re set!
im sticking with my regulary dvd But,I would love to have a blue-ray because of the better pictures. But my gosh Blu-ray movies are soo expensive to buy & rent! So since regular dvd are cheap to buy & rent… ILL STICK WITH MY REGULAR DVD’S & MY REGULAR DVD PLAYER UNTIL THEY MAKE IT THE SAME PRICE OR CLOSE ENOUGH TO IT
I agree with you 100% !!!!!!
There are some movies that I buy on blu-ray because I know the experience will be better. It’s usually action movies or the ones that I really want to have extras on such as transformers, fast five, and harry potters. I have a lot of dvds and it would cost a lot of money to upgrade. But I think if I did have the money it would be worth it to upgrade.
There isnt much difference because i own both dvd and blue-ray. My blue ray is a sony from sears which i paid 250 for it and i have played it maybe 8 times and its already gave me trouble. my dvd players last a loooooong time. Picture quality is a little better on blue ray but its not worth (in my opinion) the extra money you have to pay for a movie
I’m going to go with regular DVD player, not all movies are on blu-ray. So with that being said I will stay with regular DVDs & just watch my movies on 3D flat screen for better picture quality.
I’m not entirely sold on the better quality of HD and Blu-Ray — I don’t sit close enough to my TV to really see the difference.
I have upgraded to a blue ray player, but we choose which ever one is available on the Redbox. I have seen both and honestly don’t see a huge difference. But with Blu-Ray being more expensive, a lot of people don’t have the extra money to buy the players or the movies, So I think there will be a demand for both. We usually purchase regular DVD’s because of the cost & right now, every dollar counts.
Blu -Ray will still increase in growth I’m sure, because If you go to buy a movie and that’s all they have in the store..If your child has been begging for that latest movie, you buy it..Its funny how I have noticed more availability in the Blu- Ray on store shelves than regular DVD’s. They make more money on the Blu-Ray sales..Im sure that’s why..lol
I’m sticking with my DVD player until it not longer works. Then, I’m probably going to buy a Blu-Ray player. But, after reading the comments about how Blu-Ray players are not that much of an improvement, I may not! I’ve read that Blu-Ray players play both DVD’s and Blu-Ray discs, so that makes me lean towards purchasing a Blu-Ray player. So, I guess I’m undecided at this point.
Blu Ray all the way! I purchased the Samsung 3D LED tv this year along with the rest of the set up that requires playing Blu ray and there is just no comparison. The picture quality is phenomenal, no lagging in graphic display, more movie features on disc, and best of all I use Redbox to watch my Blu Ray movies so really it is affordable! I wouldn’t have it any other way :)
Hello! Well I prefer the old style, because it’s more available. I grew up falling in love with movie after movie on a plain VHS VCR, and now I love them on my DVD player. So that’s my choice.
I will, however, make the argument that my brother and his wife have a Blu-Ray and boy does it ENHANCE the experience of adventure movies!! Love looking at helicopter-filmed scenes from above a city on a Blu-Ray movie!
I love watching movies in high definition so I go with the Blu-Ray features of my playstation 3 whenever I watch movies. you gotta love the ps3, like they say it only dose everything.
I have a DVD player and will use it until it breaks. I only have one hd t.v. so a blu-ray is still a year away. If I see a good Christmas sale I may accidentally drop the dvd player.
I stuck with DVD until I got a PS3 for Christmas. Now I heart Blu-Ray.
Can’t afford blue ray yet
I myself stick with old dvd’s because I haven’t really thought of purchasing one. However my game systems are blueray but DVD still has a wider variety than blueray when they have more I’m sure I’ll switch.
I think the DVD is still the only option for older folks like my Mother and Grandparents who are not so quick to embrace all the new tech stuff being thrown at them on a daily basis.
Sometimes you have to hold on to the older technology for awhile for the sake of the masses..
I have both a dvd and a blue ray player… I like the blue ray for the wifi capabilities… I like to be able to get movies instantly… but as far as the movies I think they are way too expensive to purchase.. Actually I did purchase the Cars movie for my nephew and after a week the blue ray movie no longer works in the blue ray player…so I paid extra for something that no longer works after a week?? just crazy
I have a dvd player and havent’t upgraded to blu-ray. I haven’t had any problems with my dvd player and enjoy the way it works. Sticking with dvd player until mine gives up! The movies look great on it!
I have both, but haven’t used the blu-ray much. I guess probably because it costs more to rent the blu-ray movies.
Technology keeps upgrading so fast, I, simply enjoy, like my 8 tracks (oops, showing my age) my VHSs and DVDs…I understand those who appreciate quality and, perhaps, certain images warrant the upgrades…Just old-fashioned…keeps me feelin’ young.
Personally, I’ve found some movies don’t matter if they’re blu ray or dvd. However, others…blu ray only. Example: Avatar- MUST be blu ray. Basically, CGI has to be blu ray and regular movies are fine as dvd. Some of the higher quality action movies are better as blu ray. Especially if there’s a lot of colors, fast action, cool sound, etc.
Basically, we enjoy being able to view different types of media. We don’t have cable or satellite. We use Netflix for tv shows. For movies, we rent and/or purchase blu ray and dvd movies. We also use the vhs player for some things still. Our blu ray/vhs player plays just about everything. It’ll even play music cd’s. We made sure we had versatility and didn’t see the sense in locking ourselves into only one media.
Hmmm,.,. well I’ve heard about Blue Ray.,., but I know DVD.,., so why mess with a good thing really? FYI .,., I was totally happy with VHS ,. which is why we still own about 300,.. Some are as old as my 11 yr. old son and will last long enough for some grandchildren im sure. Hopefully so will our players.,.,.lol donations accepted.
I’m sticking with regular DVD’s right now, because of the expense of upgrading. I look forward to seeing all my favorites in BluRay sometime in the future, though.
Still on DVD but suspect will need to transition over to Blu-ray once DVD player conks out. Looking like DVDs will be more difficult to locate as Blu-ray shelf-space slowly swallows up DVD displays. Although Blu-ray player cost has come way down, the disks remain relatively expensive and, last time we checked, it’s still the story and not the visual and audio effects that really makes films really great.
If we didn’t have a PS3 in which you can play Blu-rays in, we wouldn’t have upgraded.
Still using DVD format – blue ray is too expensive – not worth the cost since I don’t watch movies several times.
You need a 1080p HiDef TV to take advantage of Blu Ray and I don’t have that kind of TV so I am just sticking with DVD format.
I will be sticking with DVD, we have a collection of over 3000 dvd’s and I will not repurchase again, as we have finally replaced the VHS Tapes with the DVD’s that we were collecting through the 70’s and 80’s
Nope. Not yet. Maybe soon.
I don’t believe in pay extra for this so called superior quality. I have tons of DVD’s and enjoy watching them on my laptop and DVD devices as well as on my xbox and playstation. I have no issue with the quality of DVD viewing! I don’t see the need to put money into blue rays. Heck I still even have a VHS machine and a large VHS collection!
Yes, I’ve upgraded to Blu-ray instead of DVD. I loved it. The only problem now is they have upgraded the Blu-Ray discs and it no longer plays in my Blu-Ray player. UUGGHH!!! I got to get the player upgraded if I want to see any of the new blu ray discs that I brought, it’ll cost me about $24.00 to do it in best buy. Not cool!!!!
Hi, I like DVD and my husband just upgraded to Blu-Ray. I like the DVD because of the cost and he likes the Blue-Ray because of the picture and I am beginning to like it also. Since we have now gotten the new system I really am liking the Blu-Ray a whole lot more. There is really no comparison. It is just like when they had 8 track to Cassettes. Then VHS to DVD, we still have both of these , because we have a lot of movies. It is just Out with the Old and in with the New. No matter if the Old still works well enough. Just need to Upgrade and Keep on Spending that Cold Hard Cash. Sum it up I am for Blu-Ray since we now have it.
Hi, we up graded by buying a PS3 & player for the bedroom. While we continue to buy both, BLU-RAY is fantastic for kids animated movies & action movies. I love the Blu-ray’s extra scratch protection. I don’t have to worry about the kids handling them as much. Buying a PS3 doubles for blu-ray & games. Well worth buying to watch Toy Story3, Fast five, Transformers, green lantern, etc, etc, etc LOVE IT!
I firmly believe in collecting the films that I want to study on disc. That said, I refuse to pay any premium price for BR.
There is no excuse for BR players costing any more than a DVD player (I have a multi-DVD disc player/changer) and there is doubly no excuse for BR discs costing any more than DL-DVD discs.
Most/all of the so-called BR “extras” were produced at the same time the film was being made/posted. Any so-called “live”/Internet-based content can be found/had elsewhere. (I am not going to directly connect a dedicated disc player, of any stripe, to the Internet.)
BR, as a percentage of disc sales, is slightly increasing only because overall disc purchases are falling. DVD sales are falling because no one, in their right mind, is going to pay full studio SRP. The pricing “sweet spot” for DVD-s has long been overshot by the studios for the vast majority of potential disc buyers, a long time ago and the outrageously high SRP pricing only serves to incentivize piracy. (I only collect studio sanctioned media and will sometimes even pay a premium for a “digital copy” extra. I don’t use BitTorrent & I have lots of better things to do with my time and bandwidth.)
Until things conform to my expectations, I am sticking with DVD.
