TGIF! Every week on “Freebie Friday”, we offer our readers an opportunity to win free prizes. This week, you have a chance to win a free copy of a DVD or Blu-ray of your choice, just by answering a fun question.

One of the big movie industry news stories this week was the continued growth of Blu-ray at the expense of DVD. Proving there is still an interest in physical media purchases for at least some consumers, the Blu-ray format is still showing steady growth.

To enter this week’s giveaway, simply answer the following question in the comments section below:

Have you upgraded from DVD to Blu-ray?

Tell us why you’re sticking with good old (and good enough) DVD. Or tell us why the superior picture and sound of Blu-ray are worth the cost of upgrading your home theater system and media collection.

On Monday the 24th, we will randomly select a winner from the submitted comments.

No blu-ray player for me because the discs are too expensive compared to dvds

We don’t have a hi-def tv so no reason to get a blue-ray player. I won’t replace the tv until it breaks so I won’t even consider switching until then.

I only upgraded the player when purchasing my new Plasma TV. IMHO the BD image is superiors vs upconversions on 1080p plasma, but not enough of a difference on older rptv..

    Thx.

I am lucky to be able to rent an occasional dvd, so for now blue ray is not an option.

My husband and I still have an old-school television and dvd player that are definitely not compatible with blu-ray.

Yes, we have blu-ray. Some movies are worth the extra. Especially if I can get a multi-disc set so I also have a digital copy.

I have not upgraded yet reason being well theres two reasons money is the big one the fact that the blu-ray dvd players are way more than a regular dvd player and so are the dvds that are blu-ray 2nd I don’t see anything wrong with what I already have and I say if its not broke don’t fix it, but if I had the money to waste I maybe would get atleast one blu-ray dvd player but I would have to have enough money to get a few blu-ray dvds and to be honest don’t see me having that kind of money to waste anytime soon….so I will stick with the regular dvd player it works just fine for me :)

I have both standard DCS and blueray. Most of the movies I rent for my grandkids are DVDs. There is no denying the increased visual pleasure in Blueray especially for action films.

I’ve had a blu-ray player for almost five years now, the superiority of the picture and sound are well woth the upgrade.

I prefer blue ray for action or adventure type movies…but generally not for kid ones.

No…I am a late adopter of new technology…I don’t switch until the old is obsolete. Don’t need the best picture, my imagination works just fine.

Blu-Ray is great when you have a high-definition TV, otherwise hard to notice the improved picture. I still prefer DVD format as easier to get all movies and copy.

I don’t own nor plan to buy a Blu-Ray player, unless I buy a PS3. Yes, Blu-Ray does have a great picture and sound but, I still like the classic DVD picture. On my 42″ LCD TV it looks just fine. DVD format movies are still cheaper to buy and rent.

I don’t have blue ray. Old seems fine to me, and I also can’t afford the additional cost.

Nope. Blue-ray is much more expensive, and I don’t notice a huge difference between the two (at least the few movies I have seen on Blue-ray).

In regards to why I’m sticking with plain ol dvds. I’m satisfied with it. If I want to watch 3d ill go to the imax. Technology is going to continue to change. Pretty soon the industry with switch entirely to blue ray. I like the fact that I have a choice. Hell I still watch vhs tapes . I’m 35 yrs old. I remember when beta was in it got phased out by vhs, vhs got phased out by dvds now dvds are gonna be a thing of the past. Until til then I’m riding this til the wheels fall off

In this economy I can’t afford the blueray discs much less the player! I have been looking for a job for over a year since graduating from college, so its cheap ole dvds for me! :)

No blues for us even though the wife’s laptop can play them. We have a 7 disc DVD player (~50 commercial DVDs), an ancient home theater system (early Dolby, non-THX), and a 32″ 720i LCD TV so if we were to go blue, it would be a major upgrade investment. Besides, we still haven’t converted our old VHS collection to DVD, so upgrading to a hi-res system for those isn’t worth the time or cost. Keep DVDs alive!!!

I have bluray players but still mostly stick to DVDs for rental. On occasion if I find a good movie where I want to see it in crystal clear bluray then I’ll purchase it, otherwise DVDs are good enough for most movies.

We upgraded to a Blue-Ray player when we replaced our Home Theatre Surround Sound System, but to be honest we rarely use it. Regular DVD’s come in very sharp on our TV and it just doesn’t seem worth the difference in price on those discs.

I can’t afford to buy a blue ray player, or the movies to play in it, but I am a mother of four, and always appreciate anything you will give away for free! LOL!

We have a blu-ray player and a few blu-ray dvds. They are expensive, so we buy them when we see a good deal.

I stick with DVD for now. The price of Blu Ray players has gone way down since they were first introduced, but the discs are still more expensive.
With my current tv/stereo setup, it just isn’t worth it to upgrade.
I have friends/relatives with all the latest stuff, the blu-ray, all the fanciest gear.
It is nice, but I really don’t feel the need to have the absolute best anymore, since I’m over 50 now. When I was younger, I always wanted latest, best stuff, but not so much anymore.
I get a very good picture with my DVD with the RBG cable setup.

I purchase a blue ray- It is a bit pricey. But I love it. It connects to the internet, it comes with 3 to 4 copies of the moive, and uising the code on the dvd’s and intering it in to thier website “to get free stuff”. Not to forget about the superior picture and sound it also has.

We don’t have a tv over 30 inches, so there is no need for us. But once we get a 50″, we will get the player, then rent the disks and buy the ones we want. I only plan on buying a few repeat titles of what I already have on DVD, the purchases will mostly be for new titles.

Slightly yes. I have a PS3 and occasionally by blurays but I still buy DVD’s just because of price. Hint Hint Sony
