TGIF! Every week on “Freebie Friday”, we offer our readers an opportunity to win free prizes. This week, you have a chance to win a free copy of a DVD or Blu-ray of your choice, just by answering a fun question.
One of the big movie industry news stories this week was the continued growth of Blu-ray at the expense of DVD. Proving there is still an interest in physical media purchases for at least some consumers, the Blu-ray format is still showing steady growth.
To enter this week’s giveaway, simply answer the following question in the comments section below:
Have you upgraded from DVD to Blu-ray?
Tell us why you’re sticking with good old (and good enough) DVD. Or tell us why the superior picture and sound of Blu-ray are worth the cost of upgrading your home theater system and media collection.
On Monday the 24th, we will randomly select a winner from the submitted comments.

I have not upgraded to Blu-ray because as a single mother living alone with a special needs child, getting a new BR player is not in my budget right now. I think that my DVD player (which happens to be my son’s xBox) works just fine with our High Def television. Im hoping by Christmas time I will be able to upgrade to Blu-Ray, but I need to get one that will play both BR movies and regular DVDs and then my son will be able to put his xbox back in his room and hopefully Santa will have brought him, his own TV too.
I have upgraded all of my equiptment but don’t have resources to replace all of my DVDs. But anything new I buy is blu-ray.
Blu-Ray is fantastic but in a few years it will go the way of the vcr tapes. Memory chips or thumb drives will be media distributor.
We are split, and have both Blue-Ray and standard DVD players and media.
We, of course, prefer the enhanced audio and video offered by Blue-Ray, and rent or purchase it when it is something we really want to see in ultra-high definition.
However, our portable DVD players, for traveling, are not Blue-Ray, so we normally try to only purchase Blue-Ray when it comes in a combo-pack with a standard DVD, too.
So, we evaluate every purchase individually, depending upon what we are looking for….
We only use streaming at home, on things we don’t really care about for video quality. So, physical media is still the choice for the important purchases or rentals.
We have a really nice HD TV, and visitors always comment on the quality of the picture on it. So we have decided to watch the “old” DVD because we are very happy with what we see on the screen. And Redbox makes it even more beautiful by letting us enjoy each movie for $1 or less!
not really that concerned about how the picture looks, just so we can still watch the movie- so, I’ll stick with the old, cheapo DVD- have plenty of other more important things to spend $ on than the TV!
I only have blu-rays that have bonus features I’m interested in that aren’t on the dvd. There is no need for upgrading…if you want better picture and sound, upgrade your tv and sound system.
I”m sticking with DVD until I can afford a new HDTV, home theater, and player.
We still have DVD just havent upgraded yet. Probably will this year
Love the picture quality that of course we all appreciate with blueray but just can’t swing the cost to buy all blue movies. We have both types of
players as well as portable. Love the red box deals! What a great relief in such a tough time, Hooah!
Nope, havent upgraded. I have way to may dvds :)
I can attest the truth in the Blu-ray advertisements on DVD previews from viewing at a friend’s home. The superior picture and sound of Blu-ray are well worth the cost of upgrading my home theater system and media collection because I felt like I was standing right beside the action as it all unfolded before me. I am in the process of upgrading to a great television experience with by the purchase of my new appropriate HDTV. I want to experience in my own home the “rush” of the Blu=ray television viewing that is better than the movie theater. I want in.
I have not upgraded to blu-ray because of price (price for a new player and price of blu-ray dvd’s). I have a large collection of dvd’s and they all work fine.
(if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it)
i wish i had blue ray
With the right tv you can get a great pitcure on regular dvd
I upgraded a few years ago because the difference between a DVD and a Blu-Ray is unbelievable. You can see the facial pores on an actor, the crispness of a fall leaf, the flaws on a street in NYC. The sound is so incredibly crisp. With all of this and being that is in the comfort of your home, it makes the movie experience so much more real and enjoyable. Thank you Redbox for offering Blu-Ray rentals!
We have both but we are starting to download most movies through Netflix and or Zune. Blu-rays are fine and if we buy a movie we buy Blu ray. We normally don’t get the Bly ray at the Redbox. Good Question.
Would love to upgrade to a Blu-ray…if I can find a good enough deal on one. Til then its sticking with the DVD
I have upgraded to Blu-ray, although from time to time I would still rent DVDs as it is much cheaper to rent than its counterpart. Maybe and just maybe, when I have the full blown sound system that I will stick to Blu-ray for its surround sound capability.
Sorta I have a dvd player that plays both dvd and blu-ray.
Until the cost of BluRay movies comes down I will keep on renting DVDs. My HDDVD player (yeah I bet on the wrong pony) still upscales DVDs so I am pretty happy with just plain old DVD for now.
I have not mainly becuase I do not have the funds and also becuase in most cases DVD quality is just fine
I watch blu-ray almost exclusively now.
I have a regular dvd player that works well and with the economy the way it is I don’t think that is a necessary item. Also, blue ray movies cost more to buy.
I have a blue ray player and the picture is awsome. I will still buy dvd’s to be cheap.
I have not switched still love my dvd’s
Still have a regular old tv so no sense upgrading to blu-ray. Can’t afford it.
I have both blue ray is better but the price is alot more as well
yes I have had a Sony for over a year. There are only some movies worth watching on blue ray I only watch one a Month but some action movies work great with Blur-ay so its a plus to have one the up-scaling can help out to
I LOOK FORWARD TO BLU-RAY BUT, FOR RIGHT NOW I CAN’T AFFORD IT. IN THE VERY NEAR FUTURE I WILL OWN A BLU-RAY PLAYER!!
Haven’t switched yet — DVD’s still fine with me, and I’m not ready to spend $$ on a blu-ray right now.
We changed our entire setup after buying a new TV early in 2011. I finally upgraded to Blu-Ray and will buy only the best discs for it. The kids still use the regular DVD player and love it. I do agree that in five years something else will inevitably replace Blu-Ray, but I’ll enjoy it while it lasts.
Yes, I have upgraded. Hello???????? Who in the hell still has dvd????? Now give me my free prize.
The winning combination of $1 Redbox rentals with excellent picture quality, combined with my recent purchase of a HD LED Smart TV- l don’t need to upgrade to Blu-ray.
I upgraded to Blu-ray, but my player will only play dvds.
I switched to Blu-Ray. I got the HDTV and the new blu-ray player. Sadly, I can’t afford to purchase Blu-Ray movies yet. I’ll just wait for the Black Friday/Cyber Monday deals.
Upgraded a long time ago. I love High Def movies!
Still have DVDs. Just donated 159 VHS to the Goodwil Store. Hope to get Blu-ray for Xmas.
blue ray is too expensive! dvds are just fine for me
Not yet. When I have to upgrade my TV I will but I have no need to right now.
