TGIF! Every week on “Freebie Friday”, we offer our readers an opportunity to win free prizes. This week, you have a chance to win a free copy of a DVD or Blu-ray of your choice, just by answering a fun question.
One of the big movie industry news stories this week was the continued growth of Blu-ray at the expense of DVD. Proving there is still an interest in physical media purchases for at least some consumers, the Blu-ray format is still showing steady growth.
To enter this week’s giveaway, simply answer the following question in the comments section below:
Have you upgraded from DVD to Blu-ray?
Tell us why you’re sticking with good old (and good enough) DVD. Or tell us why the superior picture and sound of Blu-ray are worth the cost of upgrading your home theater system and media collection.
On Monday the 24th, we will randomly select a winner from the submitted comments.

I have upgraded but I still have a lot of DVD’s. i have found that the player upgrades the DVD’s enough that I don’t buy Blu-ray movies that much….
I still have a DVD player with a high def TV and it works wonderfully. Surround sound helps. I do not feel the need to invest in Blu Ray right now.
I have a blu-ray but do still have just a DVD as well really doesn’t matter either way to me
I have upgraded to Blue Ray on my Laptop and I have two DVD players that are getting kind of old. I think the Blue Ray picture is better and looks amazing! Will probably buy a marked down Blue Ray player after the Holidays.
I upgraded to Blu-Ray when I got my PS3. It seemed like a logical progression. Not only do I get impeccable sound and visual clarity over dvd, but when it comes to gaming, it just holds so much more content than the old dvds.
I am leaning toward getting a Blu Ray but have not done so as of yet. May do so as soon as this weekend. I have so many DVDs in my collection that it is hard to think about starting all over again. The fact that regular DVDs can be played on a BlU Ray player also helps. I have watched movies on my son’s PS3 which has Blu Ray. There is definitely a difference. Not a huge Difference in a lot of movies. However some of the new ones that are made just for Blu Ray are quite a big Diff. Blu Ray on an big screen HDTV with surrond sound in a dark room with great sound is the next best thing to being at the movies. Sometimes even better because privacy of being at home in a more intimate setting with loved ones or a loved one :-) Plus the expense is much less. No ticket prices and home made cheaper snacks (better ones at that). Soon for the blu ray and should I win this movie it may be the deciding factor. ;-)
Still with the regular dvd format. When I upgrade my tv in size and features, I will probably get Blu-ray discs, but on a selective basis until he cost drops somewhat.
No, why should I? They just want me to spend more money. I still haven’t let go of VHS. I don’t know what I will do when my tapes break.
We upgraded to a Blu-ray player, and love it! It’s so much better and worth it. We only rent blu-ray discs, not regular dvd’s. We still kept all of our dvd’s, but won’t be purchasing any new dvd’s, only blu-ray discs.
Yes, of course i have! I upgraded back when it was blu-ray vs. hd dvd.
(and actually, hd dvd was better, but blu-ray (sony) had more companies so won)
Blu-ray players are affordable, and the picture quality is so much better. I’d rather watch movies at the house than at the theatre now!
I upgraded to blu ray and love it but I only have a few blu ray discs because they are expensive
I own one of the Tosheba HD DVD players. Got a VERY good deal from hhgregg. Came with 5 HD DVD movies and only cost $79. VERY good performing player. Will NOT purchase a Blue Ray because Sony makes them. I try to stay away from Sony because too many machines went bad that had the Sony logo on them. Besides, some company will Up-Scale the Blue-Ray and Sony will be out. People are VERY vane and fickle. They have to have the newest on the market and be the first to have one. Too many people are VERY Impulsive and the marketing industry takes FULL advantage of these people.
Burn those DVDs to a passport drive and plug that passport drive into your Roku. Now your movies will never shit the bed because your DVD’s are all nasty and old.
Not yet, unfortunately.
I’m still happy with DVD’s. With the rising cost of everything else, I can’t see the sense in buying a BluRay player and having to buy all new movies rather than enjoying the extensive collection I already have, and can watch, without spending another dime!
Have not changed anything to Bluray. Might if everything becomes more cost effective.
Love blue ray. Upgraded and won’t go back. You will love the quality.
I have not ungraded. We have a DVD player in our van, so blu-ray movies won’t work. I think regular DVD’s are fine. We may upgrade in the future.
Have both. I’m the old generation so I use the old system and my teenager uses Blu Ray. Main reason I can’t get the new system to work. When I get the system figured out I’ll use Blu Ray.
We do have a Blue-Ray player – however, we only own one Blue Ray Movie. In all honesty, the difference in the cost of a regular DVD and the cost of a Blue-Ray DVD – it isn’t worth the extra money! We enjoy our regular DVD’s and probably will not invest in anymore Blue Ray’s.
Have both. Use both. Depends if the movie comes in Blu Ray or not. Blu Ray is nice but not worth extra money many times.
I still have plain dvds and player. Right now blue ray is a tad too expensive for this family of six!
I have an old-school floor model t.v. and its silly for me to upgrade to blu-ray because you could never see difference between a dvd and a blu-ray.
I’m very satisfied with my DVD”s and have no reason to change. I have seen the price difference and the sound of blu-ray and I’m not convinced otherwise.
You do get a better picture color with bluerays vs DVDS
yes I have upgaded for better quality
I have upgrade to blu ray the day ps3 came out. I feel like there is a lot in quality and sound and its worth the upgrade. So took the change the first thing.
I have a Panasonic Blu-Ray machine and it makes DVDs nearly as good as BD.
Yes, I have upgraded. Picture quality is so much better! I highly recommend the change.
I have partially upgraded. I got a blueray player with theater audio system for the family room; but have dvd players on the other rooms.
i have not updated to a blu ray player because it so much more expensive to buy blu ray dvds than regular dvds. i like the way blu ray plays but still until its absoultly nescessary im not goint to buy a blu ray yet
I have both! I upgraded and still kept my dvd player as well! I think blue ray does look quite a bit better but dvd’s look pretty good too on my 72 inch tv!!
No I am fine with DVD’s
Yes and no……I haven’t upgraded to a blu-ray player (just have a dvd player), but I did buy a Playstation 3, on which I can watch blu-ray movies.
I’ve got a massive collection of DVDs, but I felt as though I needed the higher quality of BluRay as well. It also helped that I owned a PS3, so it made the transition easier. Upconverted DVDs look nice, but Blu all the way for me.
Call me old fashioned, but I’m not upgrading just yet. I think DVDs are fine for the purpose, but if I had some extra cash laying around, I might be persuaded to convert.
I can’t tell the difference between the two so I am sticking with DVD’s for now! My eye site isn’t what it used to be!
I use my PS3’s Blu-ray player but I only have a handful of Blu-rays. Most of my TV shows and movies are on DVD. The biggest thing holding me back from buying more BRs is my Netflix subscription. Anything that I want to see is either streaming, available for DVD by mail or it will soon be on Netflix. I don’t have to change out discs or store 300+ DVDs/BRs in my house.
I am always looking for ways to live below my means, something I wish others would learn to do (especially my government). This has been an easy decision for me, I don’t need Blu-ray right now, and maybe not later?
I haven’t upgraded to blue ray because I have such a large collection of dvd’s and enjoy them daily.
