TGIF! Every week on “Freebie Friday”, we offer our readers an opportunity to win free prizes. This week, you have a chance to win a free copy of a DVD or Blu-ray of your choice, just by answering a fun question.
One of the big movie industry news stories this week was the continued growth of Blu-ray at the expense of DVD. Proving there is still an interest in physical media purchases for at least some consumers, the Blu-ray format is still showing steady growth.
To enter this week’s giveaway, simply answer the following question in the comments section below:
Have you upgraded from DVD to Blu-ray?
Tell us why you’re sticking with good old (and good enough) DVD. Or tell us why the superior picture and sound of Blu-ray are worth the cost of upgrading your home theater system and media collection.
On Monday the 24th, we will randomly select a winner from the submitted comments.

Have not upgraded to Blue ray Not until our dvd player quits working Very Happy with regular dvd movies!
I upgraded to HD and Blu-ray years ago, right after HD-DVD lost the battle. Whenever I purchase a movie it is always on Blu-ray.
No, I haven’t switched from DVD to Blu-ray.
I won’t pretend DVD media is obsolete until the technology actually upgrades enough that it can’t be instantly foiled by some kid’s peanut buttery fingerprint or a scratch you can’t even see. I still miss VHS, at least that didn’t freeze or skip during the most important part of the flick. Ugh!
I still just enjoy the DVD’s even though we have both players
DVD all the way. Poor college student here, so no blu-ray for me.
I prefer DVD over Blue Ray
Why change my home theatre, when it works effortlesly, causes no problems, and is already installed, vs, a new machine, realignment to the existing equipment, a new learning curve, and the increase in quality isn’t worth the added expense.
I’ve started buying blu-ray simply because it looks better!
Wlhy chnage when the current dvd system works great!
We have upgraded to BluRay because it offers a superior picture quality, and it also improves the quality of sound…this upgrade can make te person feel like they were there in the picture–this makes for a fantastic family movie
Night!!!
I have upgraded to Blu-Ray but I haven’t gotten rid of my dvd’s yet. I purchase half and half when I rent movies. Even though Blu-Ray is my preference I do have options with DVDs.
Switched to Blu-ray discs using my PS3 since 2008 when I got my 52″ Sony 1080p HDTV! You won’t see or experience the maximum potential of the HDTV if you don’t use a Blu-Ray disc!
Still using DVD. Blu Ray may be better, but for the additional cost, not to me!
Until we can afford the $1200 price tag of a TV that can show me the difference between DVD and Blue Ray we are sticking with DVD.
I can only play DVD so that’s my choice. Waiting for technology to have the capability to do BOTH on one device.
DVD still till player dies
We upgraded from original dvd’s to blu-ray’s awhile ago. We still use regular dvd’s for non-action movies; however, using our PS3 for the blu-ray’s on movies like Avatar & Alice in Wonderland is awesome for graphics!
We still have the good ole traditional DVD player in our home because it is still working great! We also have a Blu-Ray player though. The picture and sound are awesome and make you feel like your in the theater!!!!!!!!!!! AWESOMENESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I can’t see the need to upgrade to Blueray until DVDs are extinct. Happy with what we have!
To me the only difference is really if your have a plans tv and large one…I don’t care out have a irreverence to witch one I perffer, I have both types blu ready and ac/dc
Dvd reg… But I would choose dvd over blu ray anyday
Just bought a blue ray big diferrence over dvd.
If its not broken, don’t fix it. Regular DVD looks great on my 37 “Vizio. I’m not throwing away good DVDs just in oder to be in the in crowd. I still purchase regular DVDs but someday in the far future I might get a Blu ray player, since regular DVDs can be played on it and its suppose to improve the quality of the DVD. But nigh! I will never abandon all my large collection of DVD in the 50 amount for Blu ray. It doesn’t make sense.
I recently finally at age 67 is gilving up on my old VHS player.
Not yet, don’t know that we ever will; tired of the electronics\media cartel trying to extort more and more $$ from everyone by trying to make them re-buy their movie collections in yet another format__FORGET IT! I do however, have a Wii game, and suppose if push comes to shove, I can play them on there. I may buy some future disks in Blu Ray, but will not be replacing any existing movies we have since most Blu ray players will also accommodate DVD.
I have switched over and see such a huge difference that I wish I had done it long ago!
BLURAY ALL THE WAY!
with prices as low as $69 or $79 for a blu_ray player on sale, how could I not get one? All my old DVDs play in it and I’m ready to rent or own my favorite new releases on blu_ray! I own less than a few blu-ray movies but I rent blu-ray whenever there’s a choice. It really is a WAY BETTER experience with action or sci-fi movies.
I am a cheapskate and have not upgraded to Blu-Ray yet. However, my husband has a PS2 (or 3, whichever one plays Blu-Ray) and if we need to watch a Blu-Ray, we watch it on that.
I feel that even if I could afford to upgrade, why bother? “The next big thing” always comes out a week after you upgrade anything! If you’re content like I am with DVD quality, it doesn’t hurt to wait. At least it’s not VHS.
We actually have both. The Blu-Ray is Great the picture is so much better & the color is awesome. We watched Avatar on regular DVD we Loved it so we got it on Blu-Ray & WOW the colors are amazing!!!
We have both, but only purchase/watch blurays of movies containing tons of special effects, like Transformers. When the movie is simply a drama, we opt for the regular DVD.
All our players are now Blu-Ray. Basically because the other players broke. I don’t really see too much of a difference. I guess I would have to see them side by side.
I have not upgraded to blu ray and i am in no hurry.
DVD works just great and it also gives me a great picture and sound.
The only reason to go blu ray is because everyone is doing it, but i will wait.
The whole family comes together to watch a great movie, it doesnt matter what you are playing it on as long as everyone can see, and hear and dont forget the popcorn, the DVD player is all around still great.
I am not interested in changing as I have an extremely vast collection of movies on DVD as I did with VHS, which I donated to the senior center since they take up to much storage space to retain. The extra cost is not worth it to me for the home as I am satisfied with the picture and quality of the DVD’s. However, as with VHS, someday I know I will have to.
no bluray here, just the old dvd’s…..cheaper that way!!!!
I’m slowley switching over to blue ray , I still have all my DVDs. But when I buy new ones I buy the blue rays or some copy’s that come out with both DVDs and blue rays in same box , the blue ray doesn’t scratch as easy as DVDs
I have a huge library of DVD movies and am not about to try to replace them with Blu-Ray!
DVD….Blue Ray or better will be the replacement when my DVD goes kaput.
No blue ray yet… no LED or plasma to view it on. 4 kids with 2 in first years of college leave no room for extras. DVD looks fine on a CRT
I personally like dvds over blu-ray. Because I’ve heard stories of people having trouble with blu-ray players and dvds work fine for me, so I’m sticking with them.
Haven’t upgraded to Blu-ray. I have one tv that has built in DVD so until that tv needs replacing, the DVD players in the house stay. I have watched Blu-ray disc and it is much clearer and crisper but will have to remain with DVD for now.
Not upgraded yet. Need a really good tv first. My laptop does BD, and I occasionally watch on that, but the resolution & sound are lost on the small screen.
