TGIF! Every week on “Freebie Friday”, we offer our readers an opportunity to win free prizes. This week, you have a chance to win a free copy of a DVD or Blu-ray of your choice, just by answering a fun question.
One of the big movie industry news stories this week was the continued growth of Blu-ray at the expense of DVD. Proving there is still an interest in physical media purchases for at least some consumers, the Blu-ray format is still showing steady growth.
To enter this week’s giveaway, simply answer the following question in the comments section below:
Have you upgraded from DVD to Blu-ray?
Tell us why you’re sticking with good old (and good enough) DVD. Or tell us why the superior picture and sound of Blu-ray are worth the cost of upgrading your home theater system and media collection.
On Monday the 24th, we will randomly select a winner from the submitted comments.

Although there is a good deal of difference in the picture quality between DVD and BLUE RAY the greatest difference appears to be the quantum leap in sound clarity and range. I purchased a copy of “BULLITT”, a Steve McQueen classic from the 60’s, redone in BLue RAY and the difference in both picture and sound quality were flabbergasting to say the least. I am now BLUE RAY all the way.
I have upgraded to a Blu-Ray, but the majority of my movies are still DVD. Blu Ray is especially great for action movies.
DVD is just fine and cheaper
made the switch because costs are finally down- they play my DVDs and most places are making the switch to Bluray against the DVDs
Yes, I have upgraded to BlueRay and I love it, especially with a flat screen TV and popcorn!
Don’t upgrade to BlueRay just yet. Waiting for my youngest to get a little bigger so the disks won’t get damaged
I have a two year old at home so waiting for her to destroy old faithful dvd player before investing in a blue ray. I’m fine with dvd’s for now.
I havent upgraded to blueray because im not sure what the benifits of blueray are.
I have not tried BluRay just yet, but DVD on it’s own is just fine. Its easy, affordable, and original. But, I am willing to upgrade and try BluRay and see how that works hahaha.
Blu-rays and the equipment needed to play them are too expensive for a poor college student like me. DVDs work just fine.
The only reason I do not change to blu ray is because its not essential for a lot of the movies that I watch. If I’m watching an older movie I enjoy the way it makes me feel, as if I’ve gone into that era to sit through their thoughts. Maybe one day we will forget about standard dvds but not today. :)
We made the switch to blu-ray when we got a flatscreen HD tv. I especially love the colors for animated movies like the newly re-released Lion King.
Oldies r goodies!
I am a DVD person, I have not tried BlueRay as of yet
DVD is fine for me. With all the streaming options out there, I rarely even buy a DVD any more.
Blu-ray is the best! Plus the upconvert feature on ours makes our regular dvd’s really stand out. I’ll stay home now rather than go to the theaters!
Still using DVD….Blue-Ray is too expensive and I don’t care that much about the difference in quality and sound….just so I can see and hear the movie.
I’ve upgraded to BluRay, and have a few (started collecting when I got the player).
Though, I’ve opted for DVD on quite a few movies only because the Special and Extra Features are usually way more on DVD than on blurays, studios seem to scrimp on that for older Blu-rays. But for the newer movies coming out, Blu-ray’s the way to go!
Sure did, in the form of a PS3 LOL Video gaming system, DVD and Blue Ray player, PERFECT !!!!!
Im sticking with DVD…just have so many already!
Have not made the switch to blue-ray since I still have too many dvds in my possession. However, will probably switch after Christmas if Santa is still employed!!!
In this economy we are being careful with our purchases. Although Blu-ray IS superior, we are content to view and listen to movies on DVD. In this way we can afford food and gas, which is far superior to Blu-ray. (c:
Upgraded to blu-ray, absolutely love the quality difference especially in sound between blu-ray and dvd. You do need a decent TV though to tell the difference, otherwise it’s not worth the upgrade. But with the right TV and speaker set up, the quality is amazing. I don’t know if blu-ray will ever fully defeat dvd though, since it will likely all go to digital only soon, with no physical medium except for collectors.
I switch to blu-ray because I can get them for $4 a pop in the pawn shops
DVD is still the best choice for me. Blu-ray needs to be more mainstream for the price to drop. Just like when DVD first came out to replace VHS, there prices were sky high. Blue-ray is no different.
DVD’s took a while for the prices to drop. History repeats its self and Blu-ray prices are dropping, but its taking longer. People just don’t see the worth in replacing there movies until the price is right and that price is pretty low. We are in a time where people want things cheap. I can’t justify re-spending more money (for the same content) than what I payed for to begin with. Sure it may look and sound better and have more bells and whistles, but for the most part the movie is still the same. Its really a mind trick. The two formats really have to be played side by side to see the difference. Otherwise it doesn’t really matter. A DVD up-converted or played with a tweaked media player on a computer is a great alternative to Blu-ray. The DVD/Blu-ray can only be its best on the equipment it is being played on. DVDs are cheap and you can usually buy 2-5 DVD titles to 1 Blu-ray.
What will replace Blu-ray?
How many times over would you pay to replace your movies?
Oh, and streaming… HAHAHA! What ever.
I went to blu-ray at the beginning of last year. I love the better picture and sound. When I purchase or rent a new movie it is always in the Blu-ray format.
Yes in that our new laptop has the technology and no in that we have never connected it to our television.
I have not made the switch yes…I still have the faithfull DVD. I’m a single mom raising 3 kids still at home by myself so Blu Ray is out of cost range for me. Not to mention the grandson that would mess up the Blu-Ray.
Not against making the switch but DVDs are fine for now.
We have an extensive dvd collection, so really don’t want the expense of replacing older movies. You know if you start with something new, you want to see everything, so we’ll stick with the old, its good enough!
I am still faithful to DVD. I have to many DVD Players to start switching over now, but my Computer and PS3 can play Blu-ray movies so I can watch them if I want.
DVD’s are much cheaper than blurays, I enjoy both though, I think some movies that are action packed with special effects is a must for bluray viewing. More of the dramas and things I would rather watch on DVD due to cheaper prices, as well as no special graphics or sound required to make a big difference.
One day I would like to have a blu-ray player, but I just in no way can afford one right now. So for now dvd’s work for me.
I got a Blu-Ray Player shortly after they first came out. and have enjoyed the quality of picture and sound, however, DVD is cheaper and unless you compare them side by side, you won’t know any difference. In today,s economy “very good cheaper is better than outstanding expensive”.
Like a lot of many people nowadays, I can’t afford to get the Blu-ray equipment. I’m lucky enough to be able to afford renting a DVD from time to time. Even tho it is probably better, I also can’t afford an Audi vehicle and have to be satisfied with my 1997 Dodge Intrepid. So, please stay with DVD’s.
I’ve upgraded to the latest and greatest Blu-Ray mainly because my old player was dying and the Blu-Ray player can still manage all of my DVDs just fine.
No, I have not upgraded to blu-ray yet. I have had the oppurtunity to see a blu-ray movie and I have to say the difference in quality is great. The pic looks so clear in blu-ray. DVD is so much cheaper, but one day maybe I can afford blu-ray.
yes have upgraded but most are still dvd
Not yet ~ would like to; just like I would love to have Blue-Ray – but got to wait for prices to go down.
bluray all the way. once you make the step forward you can’t go back
I love the picture and sound quality of Bluray. The Bluray player are still a little buggy compared to the ease and speed of starting a DVD movie, but worth it for the quality. Plus with Redbox, it’s only 50 cents more to rent :)
