TGIF! Every week on “Freebie Friday”, we offer our readers an opportunity to win free prizes. This week, you have a chance to win a free copy of a DVD or Blu-ray of your choice, just by answering a fun question.
One of the big movie industry news stories this week was the continued growth of Blu-ray at the expense of DVD. Proving there is still an interest in physical media purchases for at least some consumers, the Blu-ray format is still showing steady growth.
To enter this week’s giveaway, simply answer the following question in the comments section below:
Have you upgraded from DVD to Blu-ray?
Tell us why you’re sticking with good old (and good enough) DVD. Or tell us why the superior picture and sound of Blu-ray are worth the cost of upgrading your home theater system and media collection.
On Monday the 24th, we will randomly select a winner from the submitted comments.

I’ll stick with DVD.
As an option, *upscaling* SD DVD to 1080p is almost as good as BD sources. I doubt if I ‘ll be *replacing* any SD DVDs any time soon. Why bother! Worse, with the exception of the “tent pole” titles, the enjoyment factor, much like BW versus color, is not enhanced enough to justifying any replacement.
I have not upgraded yet because i like dvds n blue ray is kinda of expensive,n all my movies are regular dvds.
I’ll stick with DVD and VHS.
No, we have not upgraded to a blu ray DVD player per say, but can view blu ray discs on my son’s PlayStation 3, which is hooked up to his TV!
I haven’t upgraded. I’m too cheap. My dvd player works so if it ain’t broke don’t fix it!
Yes, but perfer DVD.
I own many DVDs so it would be crazy to switch and bluray is expensive
I have a DVD/VCR combo thing and it works great! I don’t wanna upgrade to blu ray cuz I don’t wanna have to replace my VHS and DVD movies. I don’t really see the difference in blu ray and reg dvd picture quality anyways. So like the comment said before mine….If it ain’t broken…why fix it?
Movies are movies. I like them anyway i can get them and Redbox deal are great!
Are you crazy! I have upgraded to Blue-ray because there is a world of difference in clarity, definition, etc. All but a live performance!
I didn’t have either so went ahead and spent a little extra for the blue ray so I could watch online content, like YouTube, Amazon’s movies, and Netflix.
Yes I have changed to Blue. I just spent moochoo bucks on a new 65″ 3-D T V and a complete systemto go with it. I enjoy the new system, and if you join a Blue disc club you’ll find cheaper prices.
I own a Blue Ray that I got on Black Friday, however my Blue Ray collection is considerably smaller than my DVD’s. I usually rent DVD’s instead, to save $$.
I have a PS3 that I use for BluRay. All of my purchases have been BluRay now. I love the crisp sharp picture and all the bonus material.
DVD’s all the way. Blue-rays aren’t ‘better’ enough to justify buying another device to take up space in my small living room
i got dvd probly only cuz i cant afford blue ray
Blu-ray for newer movies. Finally upgraded when my Betamax died.
Went Blu with my free PS3 last year. But now I’m really trying not to double-dip on movies that I already have. So new movies on Blu’s only (for the time being).
No, I haven’t upgraded yet, it’s too expensive.
I’d rather stick to DVDs. They are still way cheaper than Blu-ray DVDs and I have a software in case I ever want to convert my DVDs and transfer them into my ipod.
Blu-ray is 10x better mainly because of digital copies and most blu-ray discs have better picture and sound quality over all compared to regular DVDs. Also half the time you can find blu-ray movies for about the same price as DVD versions for a few extra bucks totally worth it in the long run
Yep, only b.c the inlaws bought us a player.
I have not switched to Blue Ray. Our DVD player has TV Guardian (removes foul language) on it and they don’t make them in Blue Ray. We love ourselves some movies, but hate the foul language!!! Thanks for the chance at a free DVD of our choice!
I have 3 DVD players and 100’s of DVD. Not ready to change yet :)
DVD……If i want the crisp details of Blu-Ray i’ll put my Eye Glasses on…plus i have “Hundreds” of movies on DVD…
No, I have a DVD/VHS player/recorder. I see no reason to switch to Blu-Ray, especially considering the cost involved. I am still mourning the loss of the DVD/VHS that will record one channel while you watch a second channel and am hanging on to mine as long as I can get it repaired.
Have a couple blue ray but don’t have a player yet. Haven’t seen the difference yet since I don’t have the player.
If you spent the money to buy a 1080P HDTV why wouldn’t you get a Blu ray player? While the upconverting DVD players do a decent job of making DVD’s look like they are HD. Your HDTV does not “sing” until it’s fed a 1080P signal like that from a Blu Ray disc.
I have not switched to Blu-ray, and haven’t really had a desire to do so. We never watch the “Special Features” on DVD, so I’m sure Blu-ray wouldn’t be any different. The effects shown in the commercials seem cool, but just not something I’m interested in (especially for the price). However, I’m still listening to cd’s and haven’t even tried to use an I-Pod yet, so I could just be stuck in the past. :)
I’ve gone to Blu-ray. I like the extras you get with the blu-ray versions like ext. scenes or alternate endings. Plus blu -rays don’t scratch like DVD’s. Not to mention better audio and video.
I think I will stick with DVD. By the time I replaced all of my favorite DVDs with Blueray it would be obsolete.
We have both Blu-ray and original DVD players. I really can’t see much difference other than the prices. I think it’s just like all other electronics–there is always something bigger or better…but the cost is not worth the difference to me.
DvD are great no need to spend money on something that is not that much better than DVDs
Sticking with dvd- collection is too big to start over
I am happy with the DVD’s. With the economy the way it is, we are really watching our money, and we would rather be able to help others who are struggling with some of our discretionary funds rather than spend our money on the latest technology available.
Haven’t upgraded to Blue-ray….and don’t plan to anytime soon. “Regular” DVDs are just fine (for now!)
We actually have both a Blu-Ray player and DVD. When it comes to rentals, I prefer DVD as it is much easier to find DVD’s then Blu-Rays. As far as purchasing, we do buy both, but I tend to buy more DVD as it is hard to justify the added expense of Blu-Ray over DVD.
I am still using DVDs as I can’t afford to upgrade, but I sure would love to!
DVD…because there’s nothing wrong with them.
no upgrade. dvd’s are cheaper and just fine for my viewing standards.
