TGIF! Every week on “Freebie Friday”, we offer our readers an opportunity to win free prizes. This week, you have a chance to win a free copy of a DVD or Blu-ray of your choice, just by answering a fun question.
One of the big movie industry news stories this week was the continued growth of Blu-ray at the expense of DVD. Proving there is still an interest in physical media purchases for at least some consumers, the Blu-ray format is still showing steady growth.
To enter this week’s giveaway, simply answer the following question in the comments section below:
Have you upgraded from DVD to Blu-ray?
Tell us why you’re sticking with good old (and good enough) DVD. Or tell us why the superior picture and sound of Blu-ray are worth the cost of upgrading your home theater system and media collection.
On Monday the 24th, we will randomly select a winner from the submitted comments.

I have not upgraded yet but it is a matter of time. I will have more bluray than dvd but total media will have be less. I have turned to renting and streaming first and dvd buying after
I now have a Blu-Ray player that i received as a gift, however, I still watch mostly DVDs on it.
I do not have a bluray. Was offered one as my only Christmas present last year and decided it wasn’t that important. We still only have a dvd player.
I only upgrade to a Blu-Ray if it’s a movie that will be worth it for the special effects, like a really good action movie like “Terminator 2” or “Iron Man.” If I’m just watching a comedy or chick flick, like “The Lady Killers,” or “13 Going on 30,” regular DVD format is fine.
haven’t upgraded to blu-ray yet, but will most likely go that way in the next year.
I have both. Haven’t watched a Blu Ray yet that shows enough better quality to warrant going totally Blu Ray.
I have way too many DVDs to worry about converting to Blu-Ray in the near future.
Yes I have a ps3 which plays blurays.the picture quality can’t even compare to DVD. And if u buy the blurays the week they come out u can get them for a couple dollars more than a DVD and the combo packs come with both bluray and DVD. I love it.
While Blu-Ray may look a LITTLE better, there’s just not nearly enough incentive right now to replace my perfectly good DVD players and DVDs with all new copies of my movies.
We have had a play station 3 for a long time, and we also got on the failed HD DVD bandwagon, the red discs not the blue ones, so that was disappointing. Anyway, our collection is hugely dominated by DVDs (hundreds) as opposed to picking up a few Blu rays of our favorites (tens). If we already have something on DVD and we don’t consider it a top favorite, there is no real reason to replace it on Blu Ray. And we have Netflix and occasionally use redbox, so we buy less actual discs and only the ones we REALLY want. There have been some great Blu ray deals on Amazon recently though!
that’s the reason i bought the PS3 – Blu-Ray!! it was the same price (at the time) of the stand alone blu-ray players. besides, they STILL play your old, antiquated DVD’s too. why not upgrade to a blu-ray and get a phonemonal movie watching experience!!
I have not upgraded to Blu-ray yet. Still watching Movies on DVD player. I have noticed that Blu-Ray seems to have a betterpicture though.
i hve tried the blue ray butt i see no differance in the old dvd i putt both in the dvd player and never get any blue rays comming out of the player so ill just stick with the old dvd
We have a Blu ray player but just play regular DVDs on it. My husband was all hepped up about getting a Blu ray player. I could care less.
I have not upgraded to Bluray. It’s just not in the budget!
Because it is not my house and we cant afford to change things.
havent done it yet figured it would be out of date waiting to see everything go 3-d
I haven’t been able to upgrade because I’m unemployed. I have seen some blu-ray
movies and I love it. One of the things on my list to do when I find a job, after I pay my overdue bills, is to buy a blu-ray player, upgrade my sound and tv system.
I’m hoping it will happen before the new year.
i have not switched to BluRay yet due to the fact that while still researching the product i ran across a news item that projects that dvd and bluray are both going to become obselete. the business journals state that streaming is going to replace them in the near future, which saddens me for i have hundreds of old movies recorded on dvds so if my dvd & vhs/recorder/player breaks down..it seems eventually i won’t even be able to buy new one for my already recorded movies. which upsets me very much
not only do i have tons of money invested in these recordings, but they are movies i may never have any other way to access them again with my dvds
and the thought of having to spend more money to view them when players aren’t on the market anymore…ticks me off
but the thing that bothers me the most is that i won’t be able to even view some of the oldest movies in my collection ever again
I bought a DVD player 5 years ago for 20 bucks…when blu ray players come down more in price…then maybe i’ll make the switch. I’m not willing to put out 80-100+ dollars on something that is slightly better quality.
I upgrade to blu ray on all that are available for better sound and clarity.
I have Xbox 360 to watch DVD and I am happy with it so I will not upgrade to blu ray.
Wll I drop about 500 on my bluray entertainment system . Watch movies has changed for me thanks to blu ray I cant still and watch a regular dvd movie anymore blu ray is worth it ..
We have a Blu-Ray player. The picture quality is so very nice but the price of each Blu-ray DVD is not. So we stick with regular DVDs to watch movies. When we feel like splurging we go with a Blu-Ray DVD. But once it is more mainstream then we will switch fully over to Blu-ray DVDs
I don’t plan on updating to blue-ray anytime soon because I love using DVDs
Blu-Ray is definitly better however it is still to pricey to do an all out
conversion.
When I can purchase a Blu-Ray disk at around $8 then I will
start a collection.
Players at $50
When it was time to get a new player, I got a great deal and made the jump to Blu-ray. I haven’t regretted it at all. I can still buy/rent DVDs but I can also get sturdier Blu-ray discs. Great for those with little kids.
Blu-Ray is an upgrade in quality but I have yet to invest in this newer technology.
Have to go with blu-ray for the big action flicks just for the next generation audio alone. The upgraded picture doesn’t hurt either.
I love my regular DVD. In my eyes the blue-ray is bull crap. I have watched blue ray on blue ray equipment and didnt see too much of a difference. and just a heads up… As for 3D… they can keep that too… makes me sick, EVERY time
I have not upgraded to Blu-ray and I have no plans of doing so – ever. I don’t see the point in spending more money when I can spend less and get something just as good. I don’t need to watch movies in super-duper, crystal-clear images in order to enjoy them. Unless DVDs are done away with for good and the only option left is Blu-ray, I will not budge.
yes i have upgraded actually have both dvd and blue ray now
I haven’t upgraded to Blu Ray yet, and don’t see me doing that in the future. I think we’re all seeing that streaming and lossless Digital copies are the wave of the future. I don’t see physical media being around for too much longer.
i have not up graded to blue ray i really dont see the difference in the two and its cheaper to buy the regular dvd
I did the switch about 16 months ago, but very seldom buy or rent Blu-Ray disks, I don’t see a lot of difference with the exception of Avatar. We have a 60″ flat screen and get very good results with broadcast Hi-Def, and we are
getting a Playstaion 3 in a couple of weeks, which I am hoping I can figure out
how to stream to tv over my wireless home network.
I haven’t found a need to upgrade to a Blu Ray player. The movies that I watch on a regular dvd player are crystal clear the picture quality is great so I see no need to change.
I’ll stick with DVD as I don’t want to buy another player and the Blue Ray hasn’t shown me much . And with a Hi-Def large screen tv all movies look pretty good to me even some older VHS movies.
I dont have a bluray player yet, but I’m sure I will have to get one before long. I still use my vcr all the time. I guess I like it old school!
I did… but not really impressed.
I’ll stick with dvd as blue ray hasn’t shown me much and I don’t want to buy another player. Also with a high def large screen tv all movies pretty good to me.
