TGIF! Every week on “Freebie Friday”, we offer our readers an opportunity to win free prizes. This week, you have a chance to win a free copy of a DVD or Blu-ray of your choice, just by answering a fun question.
One of the big movie industry news stories this week was the continued growth of Blu-ray at the expense of DVD. Proving there is still an interest in physical media purchases for at least some consumers, the Blu-ray format is still showing steady growth.
To enter this week’s giveaway, simply answer the following question in the comments section below:
Have you upgraded from DVD to Blu-ray?
Tell us why you’re sticking with good old (and good enough) DVD. Or tell us why the superior picture and sound of Blu-ray are worth the cost of upgrading your home theater system and media collection.
On Monday the 24th, we will randomly select a winner from the submitted comments.

Too much cost for Blu Ray, have to save in this economy
Having to upgrade my entire DVD collection and my player? Theres not enough incentive to do it.
I do both. I have upgraded to Blu-ray, I love the detail in the picture. I still have a DVD player for kids movies, which saves me a few bucks a month in rentals. These days I only use them to watch rented movies. I do most of my movie watching on my Roku with the USB media player channel. I have converted my entire movie collection to digital files and play them from a hard drive with the Roku. My family enjoys a OnDemand like service and I save money by keeping the original disc safe from scratches and other damage.
I received a blu-ray player as a Christmas present last year. However, it is still sitting in the box. My main TV is a 2001 53″ Pioneer RPTV with only component video inputs (no HDMI). Therefore, I have seen no particular reason to set it up. I have a video scalar that upscales all my current video (VCR, LaserDisc, and DVD to 480p). I would have to lose the 480p on my VCR and LaserDisc if I hooked up my blu-ray player. My Verizon FiOS on the otherhand allows me to watch 1080i TV. (BTW, 1080i is the best my RPTV can provide.) I will not hook up the blu-ray until I get a new TV.
Am still waiting for prices to go down. The big draw to me is being able to stream off them, so waiting for one of those. Few movies out there that I feel REALLY need to be seen on blu-ray. But I’ve never gotten around to seeing Scarface and now will wait until I can see it on blu-ray.
I plan to upgrade in the future, but for now it’s not an issue.
I’m still using my old equipment but when I can, I’ll buy a blue ray player. I have to keep up with the times!
No. Possibly in the future when the cost difference is not so great.
To be honest, on most movies I can’t really tell a big difference and it’s not really that important. For example, I watched “Beautiful Boy” the other night on Blu-Ray. It probably would not have made an ounce of difference if I had watched it on DVD because of the way in witch it was shot. It just looked like a cheap, grainy film. Compare that to “The Tree of Life,” however, which I also watched for my fourth time last week on Blu-Ray, and there is simply no other way to watch that film at home. It is one of the most visually (and narratively) breathtaking films I’ve ever seen, and you would be doing yourself a disservice to see it on DVD as opposed to Blu-Ray. So, in short, some things are made for Blu-Ray… and something it really doesn’t matter so much.
Have both and pick blu-ray for movies with special effects
Waiting for a really good deal before I’ll buy.
I have a blu-ray player in my PS3 but I still do most of my watching on DVD.
I am happy with DVD and haven’t updaed to Blu-ray.
Personally I have upgraded to Blu-ray and I find that the picture quality and audio quality are remarkably upgraded from their DVD counterparts. Blu-ray offers up some crystal clear detail and superior sound. When watching movies on blu-ray for the first time you may be surprised to see how much more detail you can see vs. the standard definition DVD.
Haven’t upgraded yet. Living in a temporary situation, so I don’t want to buy a new system until I have a permanent residence.
I’m still just using a dvd for the reason that I haven’t gotten a new tv or ps3(with blu-ray) to enjoy the experience that blu-ray offers.
Yes, FINALLY, but it took a great sale at Krogers of all places on an LG Blue-ray player only, which plays regular DVD’s great! I love it! I have even bought two Blue-ray DVD’s!
I do not have an HD TV in the house so DVD is good enough for us.
I’ve upgraded to a Blu-Ray player, but still mainly use DVDs. I like the internet capabilities that come with the Blu-Ray player, but the cost of DVDs is more in line with my budget.
Hi, I don’t have a Blu-ray player, yet in the stores the picture looks clearer.
I will stick with DVDs b/c blu-rays cost to much. Btw I really dont buy DVDs I rent frm redbox or stream on Netflix. No movies worth buying as of yet.
Blu-ray does show detail better and enhances non Blu-ray movies. We probably wouldn’t have purchased the player ourselves due to the cost but received it as a gift.
Dvds are past tense…bluray is where its at! Ultimate picture with amazing sound! I mean u could see if they had something in their nose due to the clear picture. Bluray is the epic of epicness-ness!
I have both, but unless it’s a huge CGI movie (Transformers, Avatar), I generally just rent (or buy) standard DVD. I won’t pay the extra 50 cents unless it is a huge film that requires the extra definition and sound.
Upgraded to blu-ray last year and what a difference in picture quality! My family can’t tell the difference but I can. DVDs still look good through the blu-ray player too. I only buy new releases on blu-ray and I prefer putting in a movie I want to see instead of streaming services. I’ll convert to digital files in the near future too.
Boy, that makes me jealous, especially after what I just wrote as a coment/reply to their question! Glad Ur enjoying Ur pic!
Not worth the cost#2.Satisfied with my DVD player&the discs#3.Have a very good DVD player that’s very Hi-Tech.Now, DVDs become unavailable more easily than Blue-Ray, so THAT holds me up from renting, but doesn’t make me desire to upgrade to Blu-Ray.Plus I do not have Plasma, LED, or LCD TV.And #1, I have a good ole’ huge JVC TV & it works fine (it’s fairly new), so all that HD stuff isn’t available to me-& THAT alone can keep me from buying a Blu-Ray player&renting/buying Blu-Ray discs!Their HD pic won’t be helpful with my current TV. Maybe if I buy a new TV {will get the LED one}. THEN I’d get a Blu-Ray player & use HD programs with my Comcast Cable for my TV. Hope that helps :)
I have upgraded to blu-ray, but I can’t really tell a lot of difference between the two.
No Blue-Ray; we’re satisifed with what we have now. Plus we have a sound bar under our TV, so the pic and sound is satisfying enough.
I am switching to DVD because of the clearer picture.
Haven’t worked it into my budget to upgrade to a BR player, but would like to soon. I typically rent movies, rather than buy, so I don’t have to worry about upgrading a collection.
I have both. that way I can enjoy the quality of blue ray but still have the option of watching from my old dvd collection.
Some of the newest movies if it is one that I really want I will purchase blue-ray. But I have a lot invested in DVD to just go all blue-ray.
I’ve sort of made the switch. I used to buy movies every week and finally got to the point of realizing that I don’t personally need to own every movie simply because I might want to watch it again at a later date.
Once I got out of the “buy’em all” mentality I switched to only buying movies I knew I would want to watch enough to justify owning them. That being said I buy Blue-Ray discs because for a few bucks more the quality is worth it provided your Tv and sound system are up to the task.
Of course there is a caveat. I won’t buy Blue-Ray discs for DVDs I already own. There is no reason for me to double-dip my own collection when most Blue-Ray discs of older movies have fewer features than the original DVDs.
I remember when we had to upgrade from VHS to DVD. I am not wanting to it again with upgrading from DVD to Blue-Ray anytime soon. Cannot afford it in this economy. I will stay DVD as long as I can.
DVD’s for me right now do not have blu-ray player
No, not yet, but hopefully I’ll start this Chrsitmas
Yes and no. We’re starting to buy more of our new movies as Blu-Ray, but we’re not replacing the hundreds of DVDs we already have.
I don’t own a blue ray player i prefer regular dvd’s. Also Blue ray is more expensive. I don’t see the point of getting it when you can see pretty clear on both. If we do not keep using dvd’s then blue ray will be the next upgrade from vhs tapes to dvds. Gotta keep people and their jobs in business.
I don’t have Blu-ray. But i would like to win one.
I’m sticking to DVD’s as long as I can!
