TGIF! Every week on “Freebie Friday”, we offer our readers an opportunity to win free prizes. This week, you have a chance to win a free copy of a DVD or Blu-ray of your choice, just by answering a fun question.
One of the big movie industry news stories this week was the continued growth of Blu-ray at the expense of DVD. Proving there is still an interest in physical media purchases for at least some consumers, the Blu-ray format is still showing steady growth.
To enter this week’s giveaway, simply answer the following question in the comments section below:
Have you upgraded from DVD to Blu-ray?
Tell us why you’re sticking with good old (and good enough) DVD. Or tell us why the superior picture and sound of Blu-ray are worth the cost of upgrading your home theater system and media collection.
On Monday the 24th, we will randomly select a winner from the submitted comments.

blue ray is impressive but not worth the cost to me. DVD is good enough. The only reason I would consider a blue ray player now is that some can connect to Netflix and Hulu Plus, giving me another way to stream to my main tv and move the roku box to another room.
I have not upgraded. I’ve watched Blu ray and while nice not worth extra price
I still have DVDs. Not ready to spend the money on a new Blu Ray player. I’m sure I would like it, but need to save my money!
We’re happy with plain old DVD. I’ve seen picture quality comparisons and the difference was minute. For certain things, blu-ray was clearly worse. Most noticeably on scenes with a lot of movement, where the predominant color was brown. Maybe that’s why all the new movies tend towards blue tones. Someone needs to invent “brown ray”. haha
Although I have upgraded my home entertainment system to Blu-ray, I caution others in regards to jumping in and wholesale exchanging their DVD collection for Blu-ray. Some conversions to Blu-ray is actually WORSE than the DVD experience (Equilibrium for example). There are companies buying movie rights and ruining the Blu-ray conversion just to make a buck. Having said that, even my friends have commented on the difference they’ve seen between DVD and Blu-ray after watching a movie in my home.
Received a blue-ray player with my new TV. Have not set it up yet and have never watched a blue-ray movie. I guess I don’t get too excited about these things. Sorry!
We have both. I purchase blu ray disc if the price is worth the difference. Some of the movies-the quality of the difference is absolutely amazing. Since the economy slow down, we stay home more so this is our luxury.
i am sticking with blue ray and dvd’s blue ray i got a ps3 system that is way i am sticking with both it is better sound with the blue ray thanks
inside red box
I have a blu ray and will by blu ray movies but only if they come with the dvd also i watch and use both but dvd are still good enough!
we have both but i prefer dvd.. they are cheaper and i dont care enough about movie watching to care how it looks on my tv. dvds look the same as it does in the theater
I haven’t upgraded yet. I would like to, though I just can’t afford it yet. Even if I were to upgrade to Blu Ray I would still primarily use DVD simply because of cost reasons, but I would have select titles on Blu Ray.
I have both bluray and DVD and on a tv that supports hdef it just the wow effect plus the 3d theater at home experience is mind blowing.
I don’t want to spend the money to upgrade plus DVD has way more selection
I have both blu ray and dvd player i think that blu ray player is better for sound and video
The Picture quality in a Blu-Ray movie is much much better then standard DVD
I have a Blu-Ray player but rarely rent or buy Blu-Ray disks because of the cost factor. From my experience a standard DVD played in a Blu-Ray player will give you a little better quality then a standard DVD player.
Haven’t upgraded yet. The cost of blue ray dvds is a bit to high for us so for now we’ll stick with out regular dvds. They are good enough.
NOt ready to upgrade to Blu-ray too expensive and not enought titles out there. I still love my classics and need the children’s movies.
i really dont see a difference between the two.I have flat screen hd tv with dvd,and Insignia blue ray dvd player.given a choice,i go with the cheaper
I went blu-ray mainly because I’m a gamer and picked up the PS3. Easy peasy. I rent though. I think buying is waste of money.
I like Blu-ray but don’t feel the need to upgrade everything.
i am keeping my good old dvd player. it works fine, good enough for me and the kids anyway, and the movies are cheaper than blu ray!
I’ve watched 1 Blu Ray movie and it wasn’t that big of a difference (for me anyway) to warrant upgrading to a bluray player, then to upgrade a dvd collection to bluray. Too costly, with continued growth of the product, we’ve gone from vhs, to dvd, to bluray (even at one time a bluray disc that was the size of an old vinyl album and it didn’t last). Eventually it might get smaller or simply streaming all movies at some point… just products companies bring out to make a profit at the consumer expense. But with movies available with Redbox and others for $1.00, I doubt many will will be too worried about upgrading a collection anymore anyway.
We made the Blu_ray jump, and love the extras in the Blu-Ray format when they are offered, however, sometimes the rentals remove the extras in the hopes you will end up buying the media, instead of renting it…
the initial over all cost has been directly affected by the price drop in blue-ray players with internet connectivity. there is now no reason to settle for inferior video and audio playback.
I have both DVD and Blu-Ray movies and players. I don’t see much of a difference I guess because I have a HD LED TV so everything looks really good anyways. I have a few blu-ray discs that I got for $5 on Black Friday. The Blu-Ray player can play both so I will not upgrade but as new titles come out that I want to buy I’ll get the blu-ray version if the price is decent enough. My surround system is seperate from my players so there was no need to upgrade.
Not interested in upgrading to Blu-Ray. There are too many DVD players out there, with more being sold, to warrant a stop in sales for DVD. IMHO, the only thing good about blu-ray is that it works on PSP3.
Too expensive – bah. Many name brands are available for under $100. Of course, more expensive models do a better job. Biggest difference with Blu-Ray is the sound of uncompressed, true 5-channel audio. I love Blu-Ray.
Nope, we havent upgraded yet. Blu-Ray players are to expensive and the blu-ray selections aren’t all that great yet! We do however have a PS3 that plays blu-rays so thats sufficent for now.
I don’t see much difference between DVD’s and Blu-Ray’s picture-wise and we don’t have an entertainment surround sound system so the sound makes no difference for us with the Blu-Ray’s. So for now we just rent DVD’s.
I have upgraded to Blue-Ray…A lot of the movies don’t seem that different from regular.. But I do feel its still a good investment..
I haven’t upgraded and I dont know if I ever will. In todays economy sometimes keepin up with the Joness’ ins’t that important.
I have not upgraded and have no plans to do so. I’m sticking with DVDs for now.
We have both, but don’t have an HDTV in the living room yet, so primarily we rent and buy regular DVDs. DVDs “upconvert” the picture, so it’s usually a very clear picture!
I have a few Blu-rays but I still buy and rent DVDs, with only one player in the house it would be insane to buy strictly BDs. DVDs are enough for me.
blu ray? DVD ? I am old school VHS here in FL
Like others, I also have both DVD’s and Blu-Ray’s. Sometimes it’s worth it to pay extra fro the Blu-Ray version of a movie. Especially if it has cool interactive features and other great content. I also like to rent blu-rays, though I have often found it annoying how they disable most of the special features on the rental versions.
Sticking with regular DVDs, as we can’t afford to upgrade at this time.
I say blu ray is worth the cost because the picture is very CLEAR high quality pure look!!! If your watching a 3d movie its so clear it feels as if ur there experiencing the scene & the sound is perfect can feel like your in a actuall movie theater catching every sound you see on the screen!!
I have not upgraded and don’t plan to. i don’t want to pay the extra money.
I have not upgraded because of cost and my dvd players still work. If I do buy one it would only happen so I can get Netflix on the TV. Heck I still have my VCR on a couple of TV’s.
