TGIF! Every week on “Freebie Friday”, we offer our readers an opportunity to win free prizes. This week, you have a chance to win a free copy of a DVD or Blu-ray of your choice, just by answering a fun question.
One of the big movie industry news stories this week was the continued growth of Blu-ray at the expense of DVD. Proving there is still an interest in physical media purchases for at least some consumers, the Blu-ray format is still showing steady growth.
To enter this week’s giveaway, simply answer the following question in the comments section below:
Have you upgraded from DVD to Blu-ray?
Tell us why you’re sticking with good old (and good enough) DVD. Or tell us why the superior picture and sound of Blu-ray are worth the cost of upgrading your home theater system and media collection.
On Monday the 24th, we will randomly select a winner from the submitted comments.

I’m sticking with my DVD player. It works great and I am happy with it.
i have dvd and with my income what i have is what i keep!
I still have a DVD player and don’t plan on upgrading to blu ray because we have hundreds of DVD movies and blu ray everything is just too expensive….
I’m waiting for the price to come down. The $99 price differential between Blu-ray and DVD players is shrinking pretty quickly.
I am perfectly happy with my DVDs. I personally dont think its worth the extra money for a BluRay.
We are sticking with DVD for the time. For the cost, I dont’ think Blu-Ray is worth the extra cost for equipment and the Movies themselves.
With 3D HDTV’s gaining popularity, the price is dropping on standard HDTV’s. I am not really interested in wearing uncomfortable glasses to watch TV, so I recently took advantage of the market and bought a deeply discounted standard HDTV.
I love it! One thing I didn’t realize before I bought the TV is that with the increased resolution, you can actually sit closer to the TV and it still looks great. I scooted the couch closer a few feet and it really feels more like a movie theater.
Blu-Ray! It’s not dramatically different, but it’s satisfying to have the best picture quality.
I have a very nice theater room, projector and audio setup that is still standard definition. I don’t see any reason to change all that out. DVDs are good enugh for me. It would cost quite a bit to upgrade to HDMI and HD/BlueRay…
Im sticking with regular dvd I dont think the quality of the blu ray is that much better that it warrents the extra costs for the machine and movies.
I received a Blu-ray player as a gift Father’s Day 2010. I love the picture quality, both from Blu-ray and DVD upconversion. We also use the BD player for streaming from Netflix and through Playon.TV. We cut the cord almost a year ago and the Blu-ray player with all of its features supplements what we get using an antenna.
I still have my DVD player & don’t plan on getting Blu-Ray any time soon. I like my DVD’s & they are less expensive.
I am sticking with dvd….I have a lot of them and don’t see the need to jump to blu ray…I don’t see a big difference.
Sticking with DVD. Don’t think the extra cost of Blu-Ray is worth it.
DVD is good, Blue ray is too expensive.
We have a Blu-Ray player because our DVD player broke, but I stick with DVDs. The extra cost for Blu-Ray just isn’t worth it for me.
We are thinking that Thanksgiving and the day after Thanksgiving sales should have some good prices on Blu-Ray players. My husband complains that our standard 20 year old 21″ TV cuts off the ballgame scores when he watches the games. Still has a wonderful picture though. I say perfect reason to go to the sports bar. We have started buying a few favorite movies in Blu-Ray when coupons pop up. Probably get a Blu- Ray player next year.
May go to BlueRay if purchase new system in Jan.
i have both. lately, i’ve been buying only blu-rays, but am still happy to use my dvds.
i don’t see too much of a difference, but feel that the technology trend is going to make dvds obsolete sooner than later (whether we like it or not!).
I have old school but hope to upgrade to blu ray someday…
Still on DVDs and will be until my DVD player stops working.
we have a blu ray player with a huge blu ray collection of blu rays and we love blu ray. The compareison is like night and day literally. Its literally like swtiching from dial up internet too high speed. So in essense with our surround sound include there is no way id rent a dvd unless its not available too rent on blu ray. Also redbox gives me the comodity of renting a blu ray for 1.50 wich too me is a complete steel!!!!!!
I’ve already upgraded to Blu-ray and after watching them for a while, a regular DVD is like watching tv in the 60’s. I’ll be glad when all movie formats are in Blu-ray!
I haven’t upgraded, still have my DVD player, and i’m fine with it. I did think my computer had Blu-Ray, but when I tried to play a Blu-Ray that hubby got from someone, it wouldn’t play!?!
I haven’t upgraded to a blu ray yet because we dont have the money to make that switch! We would like to someday, maybe!!!
Nope. Sticking to the DVD player for now since I don’t have all that much time to watch anyway. It’s a great experience, regardless, when I finally get to sit down and watch something.
Have not tried blu ray. Prices were too high and I have been happy with prices of dvds
I have both a Blue-Ray and a DVD I use them both, Some movies are in Blue-Ray and some are not so it comes in Handy
Who can afford the added expense of replacing all our DVDs with Blue Ray! I’m thinking that even this will be out dated soon, and streaming video will be the norm, so why bother!
No, but I have received a couple of Blu-rays as gifts. So if I ever get a Blu-ray player, I’ll be ready to watch Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans and Thor.
We use both. The main TV has cable where we can get streaming Netflix, and wse use our Blue Rays in that machine, all the other TV’s have just a DVD player.
We have a DVD player & are sticking with it. Blu Rays are more expensive & there is no need to upgrade at this point.
My DVD player works fine plus u can always just use a game console to play blueray DVDs.
Sticking with DVD cause BluRay isn’t that much better than plain HiDef TV.
I got a PS3 2 years ago to get some exclusive games. The Blu Ray was an added bounus and love it.
I upgraded to a Blu Ray player but I usually rent regular DVD because of the lower cost.
I have a DVD and a Blu Ray player and personally I think Blu Rays look better. But I do not purchase Blu Rays because they are so expensive.
I am happy with my DVD. I do not want to buy a Blu Ray unless it is cheap.
I upgraded my DVD player to a Blu-Ray player a few years ago, and I have a nice TV to go along with it. I have yet to add a quality sound system, but that will likely be done in the next couple of years.
Let me predicate my comments here reflect MY economic situation & philosophy.
I bought 2 BD (bluRay) players off ebay @ a great price 2 yrs. ago. I’m glad i did, because as a top 3 bank saw fit to terminate me, after 26 years of ‘loyal service” for no apparent reason-or was it because i am OVER 55.
WHAT THIS INFO HAS TO DO W/ BD vs. DVD- is , as always MONEY.
BD vs DVD: there IS a definite difference !
My BD players upgrade the total QUALITY (audio & video)of my DVDs on my big screen & 5.1 surround sound. OK, the bottom line:
I will NOT ever PAY EXTRA to rent a BluRay from any RedBox, BlueBox, or Jukebox !!!! If MORE people took this stand, I feel the prices should stabilize to a LOWER one we can ALL enjoy.
I see FOOD & SHELTER & gas being my overwhelming priorities.
That’s why I don’t subscribe to ANY satellite or cable PAY SERVICE !!
ANTENNA TV-from my roof-and TV+phone thru my internet connection…period. God Bless our Troops & God Bless America (not including wall st.) I take sole responsibility for what i post. thank you
