TGIF! Every week on “Freebie Friday”, we offer our readers an opportunity to win free prizes. This week, you have a chance to win a free copy of a DVD or Blu-ray of your choice, just by answering a fun question.
One of the big movie industry news stories this week was the continued growth of Blu-ray at the expense of DVD. Proving there is still an interest in physical media purchases for at least some consumers, the Blu-ray format is still showing steady growth.
To enter this week’s giveaway, simply answer the following question in the comments section below:
Have you upgraded from DVD to Blu-ray?
Tell us why you’re sticking with good old (and good enough) DVD. Or tell us why the superior picture and sound of Blu-ray are worth the cost of upgrading your home theater system and media collection.
On Monday the 24th, we will randomly select a winner from the submitted comments.

DVD for me. No need to upgrade to a Blue Ray system.
I have not switched to blueray simply because they are more expensive and I can’t afford to buy a blueray player right now. So DVD’s are good enough for me and my family!
As blu ray continues to get more popular we get to see better deals, like oldies but goodies going for cheap. They need to end support of dvd format so a) I’m not forced to buy the movie twice because some people out there don’t like to experience picture quality and still want dvd and b) so we can see a price drop as demand increases.
Unfortunately, I’m a late bloomer and I haven’t had the Blu- Ray experience yet. The price hasn’t helped either. But, I do plan on vitnessing it soon.
I still can’t see any reason to switch. Just a marketing ploy…
I’ve upgraded to Bluray a year back and love the crisp picture. I’m sure I’ll love the 7.1 audio too as soon as I can upgrade it, for now the 5.1 is good enough.
I have both. I love my blue ray it has access to the internet and such but I also own a ton of DVD’s so I use that too.
The best thing about blue ray is the the clarity and sound quality. The blue ray player is also unique because it will enhance your existing DVD to HD. The only down fall is you can’t play blue ray on a regular DVD player. Either way its good technology
I haven’t bought into Blu-ray because I don’t think the cost presents enough value. I won’t pay more for the same movie (as is usually the case, it seems) simply because it’s a Blu-ray.
I’ve ripped all of our DVDs to our Mac Mini. (Children + physical media = bad.) The quality is sufficient, but the times we do get a Blu-ray from Redbox or Netflix I can tell the difference.
Blu-ray.
Still using DVD, no need to upgrade since all I have is DVD’s, and don’t buy movies much now. Will purchase a BlueRay when we need to replace a broken DVD player or When my parents purchase it for our family. That’s how we got our first DVD player.
I have too many DVDs to change to blue ray, especially kids movies. They don’t care if its the “best quality” or not. And they are more expensive!
BluRay is great!
because they are more expensive and I can’t afford to buy a blueray player right now.
Actually I have both – my family room is using the standard DVD (since our collection is still of the DVD variety), and our home theater is using a blu-ray, since the projector is capable of maximizing the picture quality – definitely a huge difference in sound and picture, that’s for sure.
I have multiple blu ray players in the house. Not only is the picture and sound quality the reason, but access to the internet for streaming is also a plus.
My DVD gives me clear picture. No need to upgrade.
I haven’t upgraded to Blu-ray YET! I feel like action movies are worth having a Blu-ray player, but I don’t watch tons of ’em! Someday I’ll Blu-Ray….
Blu-ray if only for the picture alone especially on new tvs and the technology that is always improving. It truly is night and day as the tv’s and sound systems get better.
DVD provides acceptable performance and is avaliable everywhere. DVD is just the new kid on the block and soon to be pushed aside for the next generation of “who knows what”. Lets enjoy DVD for the time being.
DVD – Blu-ray is too expensive and already have a lot of DVDS
No.
My DVD collection is way too big to start over like I did with the VHS to DVD transition. I am considering buying some Blue Rays tho if they are ever at a decent price.
Someday I’ll buy Blue Ray just like we all bought a DVD player when VHS was being replaced but as of now I still just have a DVD player. But as Technology gets better so must we.
I bought my Samsung blu-ray player from Big Lots for less than $100 & it has internet access & apps. I rent get my blu-ray movies from Blockbuster & free from the library. Watching movies like Avatar & Transformers look great on blu-ray. Much better color & crispness. (my PS3 plays blue-ray also)
I love the crisp, sharp look of blu-ray, there is nothing like it! Redbox has made it an affordable option. However, to get the true look and sound you do need to spend some serious money. Just remember you get what you pay for!
YES, I have upgraded from dvd to Blu-ray because Blu-ray brings three major improvements over DVD: better image quality, better sound quality, and more special features. All three are made possible by the larger storage capacity of Blu-ray, which is capable of storing 50GB of information on a single Blu-ray Disc, compared with DVDs, which can hold about 8GB.
I upgraded to blu-ray over a year ago. I don’t triple dip on any movies except my favorites but I do buy new movies on blu-ray. They look crisper. The player also upconverts my DVDs. I held out on the blu-ray player a lot longer than I did on DVD (was an early adapter) but it definitely looks great. Plus it was a good excuse to spring for a HDTV as well.
I have upgraded to a Blu Ray player since they will play both formats and it was only $59.99
I still buy the DVD version of movies since most of the time they are $10-$15 cheaper than Blu Ray, and the picture quality is not a big enough difference to pay that much more. The only benefit to Blu Ray imo is the extras, since DVD rarely has em now.
Other than that its 90% DVDs until Blu Ray lowers prices…
The only way I’m upgrading to a Blu-Ray is if I need to replace my DVD players. There’s no point to upgrade since the future is harddrive/internet based streaming services.
I’m fine to stick with DVD for now, I don’t have any fancy home theater equipment and don’t see a difference at stores.
I have had a Blu-ray for some time now. I also have three up-convert DVD players in different parts of my home and RV. I enjoy all of them. I own some of each format. I do see a marginal difference between an up-converted DVD and a Blu-Ray but very marginal. The down side of Blu-ray is that I can play them only on my large screen Blu-ray setup. The DVDs will play anywhere on any of my setups.
I still have a good ole’ DVD player. I’m sure Blu-ray players and Blu-ray discs have exceptional detail and quality, but I’d rather stick with my $1 DVD rentals at Redbox…good enough for me. Blu-rays are too expensive to buy and double the price to rent. Maybe one day I will make the switch when DVDs are no longer found in stores. Probably by that time, something new will be out to outdate the Blu-ray
Can’t afford to purchase a new video player, let alone to upgrade an entire home theater system or my media collection! With video stores going out of business and internet streaming becoming the wave of the future, there soon won’t be a need for DVDs OR Blu-Ray; sorry Redbox! At least you provide decent choices at a great price! A Blu-Ray player might be worth the price since you can also play DVDs and it appears to support streaming, but it won’t support Xbox Live!
Nope – we still have a regular TV, too. It used to be the biggest one on the block – 32″. Now we are in the stone age.
I couldn’t wait to buy a blue ray player because I thougt the companies might just stop carrying regular DVD’s. Miscalculation on my part. The blue rays are much more expensive. Frankly, my husband and a few friends can’t really tell the difference that much from a DVD. I also have about a gazillion VHS tapes of movies that we like and watch often.
I am happy with DVD.
blue ray has a better quality picture, i got a playstation so it has a blue ray player.
One word: Quality!!!!! better quality in sound, better and crispier visual quality, more extras, better everything in general, besides is just the sign of the times, first VHS, next DVDs and now Blu-Rays nothing wrong with that… go and buy yourself one and see the difference.
I upgraded to Blu-ray by buying a PS3, which we mostly used for games. We only own a few Blu-ray discs so far, and still mostly rent DVDs. But I can definitely see an increase in picture quality. Will slowly adapt our viewing habits that way, but it wasn’t like our immediate jump from VHS to DVD.
