TGIF! Every week on “Freebie Friday”, we offer our readers an opportunity to win free prizes. This week, you have a chance to win a free copy of a DVD or Blu-ray of your choice, just by answering a fun question.
One of the big movie industry news stories this week was the continued growth of Blu-ray at the expense of DVD. Proving there is still an interest in physical media purchases for at least some consumers, the Blu-ray format is still showing steady growth.
To enter this week’s giveaway, simply answer the following question in the comments section below:
Have you upgraded from DVD to Blu-ray?
Tell us why you’re sticking with good old (and good enough) DVD. Or tell us why the superior picture and sound of Blu-ray are worth the cost of upgrading your home theater system and media collection.
On Monday the 24th, we will randomly select a winner from the submitted comments.

I dont see a reason to switch. I have the quality of one compared to the other and it is not significant. So as of now, DVD for me.
I get tired of the constant technology switch. I like Blu Ray, but life costs too much right now, so I’m sticking with DVD.
DVD for me. If blu ray was at all worthwhile, they would not need to prod sales by making dvd/blu ray combo packs.
There is a clear resolution and sound quality improvement with blue ray. I have both still and find it cheaper to purchase DVDs but rent blue ray.
Just bought a Samsung 55″ LED 3D HDTV and Home Theater system. Im a graphic designer and I’m very visual. So upgrading to Blu-Ray was a no brainier for me. And with all of the Blu-Ray sales for movies under $10 it wasn’t a bad choice. Bottom line, picture and sound matters to me so I will be using Blu-Ray until HD streaming is more wide spread.
I purchased a blue ray player last year at Christmas and love the quality of the discs! Keep the blue rays coming!
BluRay does not fit into my future plan unless it becomes possible to rip to digital files. I have an extensive collection of movies and tv shows on dvd. I took my top 50% and ripped them to digital files. I am going to buy a multimedia system like iomega screenply director and have the files served from that. I have backups of the files and will retain the dvds as archival backups. I am satisfied with the quality of dvd and as long as dvds are available, I don’t see any reason to change.
We just bought a new blu-ray when my boyfriend decided to build a computer from scratch. I like it but I have several friends who don’t have one yet so it makes it difficult sometimes when i want to to lend them a movie and they can’t go watch it since its not in the right platform for them!
I have a Blu-ray player, but I’m not going to replace my DVD collection with Blu-rays. For the few movies I buy new I try to get the combo packs so we have the option of watching on the family van’s DVD player on trips or Blu-ray at home.
DVD is just fine, thank you. I’m tired of being made to “upgrade.” Unless “you are there,” it can’t get any better.
We have stayed with the tried and true DVD/VCR combo. We also have a BOSE which quality is great so not a need to upgrade to a blue ray disc player.
I have Blue Ray because it was given to me as a present. But I do not really see that signifcant of a change.
We have the capability of using our PS3 for Bluray, but are just so used to DVD, and the sound and picture is still so good, we havent gone for the upgrade. We feel the difference is negligible.
Im sticking with DVD for now.. The difference between DVD and Blue Ray is minor. If the difference was VHS to DVD I would definitely be upgrading.
The Other reason I might consider Blue Ray is for 3D.. but I dont have the hardware for 3d so the point is moot.
I’ll wait until they come out with a hologram that I can view from all sides
:O)
We bought the Blue Ray on sale and we run Netflix through it. Win-Win!
Blu Ray for me……There is no comparison. I bought a new Sony HD LED 3D TV and the picture is unbelievable, I just stare at it in disbelief. The picture is so clear and brilliant its unreal. When I put a Blu Ray disk in its even better.
I have blu-ray and the picture and sound are a big step above DVD, but the price point of Blu-ray is not where it needs to be to take me out of the DVD market.
BluRay is great! upgraded 2yrs ago
i am still old school. My kids and husband love blu ray. it doesn’t really matter to me as long as I can see the movie. lol.
I’m sticking with DVDs for now but would consider buying blue ray really good deals.
I am happy with my DVD.
I purchased a Blu-Ray player shortly after it became the dominant HD format in the market. Over the years, I have been buying DVDs to replace my “must own” movies that I had on VHS. I started doing this, only after the DVD became very affordable. I have purchased, only a select, few movies on Blu-Ray. For most movies, DVD format is still good enough. Its still, a digital format, and I can do everything with it. I can put it on my computer, shrink it for viewing on my phone, and make a clone copy for backup if necessary.
Personally I have a full theater system setup with sub, center, surrounds and a big screen plasma, and although I really do love the quality Blu offers I will not re-buy all my DVD’s. I pick and choose very carefully which discs may be Upgraded to Blu if at all.
I have been collecting a long time and I have many DVD’s that are of very HQ and will not be upgraded, while yes Blu is touted to have superior picture and sound, this is not always the case as one reviewer here has mentioned.
The image quality is only as good as the transfer and master can provide, so not all Blu-Ray’s are of ref quality or even near ref quality. Some studios do a better job and will take the time and money to actually re-master the movie specifically for Blu this will usually look very good if it was done correctly, and only if it was done correctly as some may even overdo it making it no longer look like a film.
You want to keep the natural film grain but remove artifacts like specks and scratches and maybe pop the colors a bit for the re-master. The same care must also be taken with the sound. Sony has been doing a fantastic job with many of their releases, even older titles such as Fifth Element have been remastered to perfection on Blu and really do look amazing so as an example if you owned the DVD you would want to upgrade that movie to Blu.
But then there are movies that look fantastic on DVD like Underworld Evolution
this is a Sony DVD and it’s quality is very high. The picture and sound are fantastic, this is the type of quality that all DVD’s should be judged against.
Please any one who owns the Original copy of this on DVD please comment about its quality. So all in all I did get on the band wagon with Blu but I will still keep and use both formats.
We perfer DVD.We have a blue ray player but it sucks!! It hasn’t worked right since we bought it.Maybe if we got a different one(a different brand) we would use it more but I really don’t see much difference in the quality of picture so I think we will just continue to use DVD.
We have both, but my hubby and I like the Blu Rays better . . . the clarity and colors of Blu Ray disks are so wonderful!
I haven’t yet made the switch or even watched anything on Blu-Ray. I spoke with an associate of a video rental store about it, and he said he’ll never make the switch back to DVDs because of Blu-Ray’s quality.
I’m just fine with DVDs, and I don’t hope that they’ll become obsolete any time soon.
When we submit to buying the latest technological gadgets to enhance our experience, we find that we have to upgrade everything else related to that particular gadget. In this case for the blu ray, not only would I have to buy a blu ray player, but in order for me to really have the ultimate experience, I need to upgrade everything else like the sound system, the tv and whatever else may be related to it in order to truly appreciate the quality of the blu ray. Once that popularity goes out, something else will come along and here we go again. The experience we get by using a dvd is just fine for my family and the money we don’t spend is used on truly necessary items.
I have purchased a blue-ray because it is same pricing as a dvd and I needed one or the other,so just went with the best technology
We have shamefully not upgraded yet! :(
If it is economical I will purchase a Blu-Ray, but I don’t feel I have to re-buy my DVD collection. I do have a Blu-Ray player, bought recently on sale, but my DVDs are just fine,
I have a blu ray player and I feel the difference is minor so for now I just rent blu ray but purchase DVD.
Sticking with DVD, just got most of my VCR tapes over to DVD, bluray to expensive, not doing again untill im forced.
We have upgraded to the blue-ray. We like the quality and sound of the blue-ray a lot better than the DVD. I just wish all blue-rays were sold in the combo pack because we don’t have a blue-ray player in our room.
I have both, Blu Ray in the living room and standard DVD in bed room. The price of Blu-Ray players has become affordable and there is much more info on Blu-Ray disc. I buy regular dvd`s unless it`s a movie that has alot of action and special effects.
Bu-ray is a superior format. However, not every movie brings out a real difference. As such, I have no desire to replace my DVD collection for blu-ray. However, for new purchases, I seriously consider blu-ray.
Blu Rays are great, but the problem with them is you can only play them in the one player. We have a dvd player in our car, and we can’t take the collection with us when we travel.
I have not, simply b/c my old dvd player works just fine for my needs. I would like a blue ray player but I can’t justify spending more on buying/renting blue ray movies. I get that the picture and sound quality are better but I don’t want to have to spend more to get it. Plus other thank action movies I prefer the old cimimatic look to a movie over HD.
I will remain with regular DVD’s. I see no difference in picture quality or sound. Plus the cost of Blu-Ray is so much more than regular dvd’s! Why change when all the new releases still come out on regular DVDs?
I still think Blu-ray movies are very expense and the good Blu-Ray players too, plus my home theater is not digital and recently bought a dvd player with a good 5.1 output, so is ok for now.
