TGIF! Every week on “Freebie Friday”, we offer our readers an opportunity to win free prizes. This week, you have a chance to win a free copy of a DVD or Blu-ray of your choice, just by answering a fun question.

One of the big movie industry news stories this week was the continued growth of Blu-ray at the expense of DVD. Proving there is still an interest in physical media purchases for at least some consumers, the Blu-ray format is still showing steady growth.

To enter this week’s giveaway, simply answer the following question in the comments section below:

Have you upgraded from DVD to Blu-ray?

Tell us why you’re sticking with good old (and good enough) DVD. Or tell us why the superior picture and sound of Blu-ray are worth the cost of upgrading your home theater system and media collection.

On Monday the 24th, we will randomly select a winner from the submitted comments.

Can someone explain to me how the ads on every new DVD I rent that try to show how much better BluRay is ares supposed to convince me when I am viewing them on a DVD player? I’ll switch when a) my DVD player gives up the ghost or b) there’s a way to rip BluRay discs to my PC for later viewing.

Nope. I’ll stick with my DVD’s until they’re no longer offered. Then I’ll be stuck paying for a BluRay player.

I upgraded to Blu-ray, but I only have 1 Blu-ray player and 3 tvs. So when I buy movies, I try and get the combo packs. Blu-ray+DVD.

I’m sticking with DVD because 1) Blu-ray is too expensive and 2) I do not see the supposed increase in quality of the picture that Blu-Ray is reported to have. We have a DVD player and a PS3 that will play Blu-Ray…we still continue to buy DVDs :)

Upgrade to Blu-Ray??? Nope! Not yet! I’m still using VHS along with DVD! As long as Redbox has DVD rentals for $1 (YEA!!) then I’ll wait to upgrade.

I have a BluRay but rarely watch movies on it. I find that the quality of a normal DVD on my 60″ Sony Grand Wega is almost as good as the BluRay. For me, I just don’t see a noticeable difference.

I am sticking with DVD b/c Blu-ray is going to be just as obsolete. Physical movies will be just as obsolete as physical music. Everything is going to be streaming digital over the internet.

I think most people who rent from red box like the dollar price compared to the more expensive blu-ray price. I know i will stick with dvd’s until i have to upgrade due to the availabllity of movies coming out. I am hoping they keep making the movies in both formats.

I am going to stick with plain old DVD since I have over 500+ movies! Maybe some year, like 2020 I’ll trade up, but not yet! ;-)

We purchased a Blu-ray when we bought an HDTV. The picture is great, even the regular dvd’s play on it and also look good. My only problem with it is it takes forever to load and even to open to remove the disc.

I LIKE MY BLU RAY BECAUSE I CAN PLAY EITHER BLU RAY OR DVD ON IT AND THE BLU RAY SEEMS TO SHOW MY DVDS BETTER THAN THE DVD PLAYER; SO WHY HAVE BOTH. I DONATE MY DVD PLAYER SO SOMEONE WHO DOESN’T HAVE ONE OR CAN’T AFFORD IT COULD GET ONE.

Blu ray sucks. I bought a good player and the quality of the picture is the same, i have a flat screen HDTV and everything. I see no change, only costing more money.

I have 5 dvd players in my house and we own 2 portable dvd players. They all work great and we have no problems with them. Since all of them work great, we have not added a Blu Ray player.

No blue ray yet…we still have VHS movies we have yet to upgrade to DVD! Plus, we don’t have the money right now to spend on something frivilous when our DVD players still work just fine. I see no need to “keep up with the Joneses” in the new technology race. Maybe when it’s been around a while and all the kinks have a chance to be worked out AND the price is more reasonable, we may consider it, but not anytime in the near future.

I have not been impressed with Blu-Ray as much as everybody else I guess. Call me a technology dinosaur but I’m a die hard DVD fan and will remain so until it’s not around no more. Telling my age her but before that it was the old VCR tapes. I still read actual books for crying out loud. Shocking in the age of Kindles huh. LOL.

We are senior citizens and only have a BluRay because our son bought us one last Christmas. We still mostly rent DVDs because they are cheaper to rent and a lot of the movies we rent aren’t available on Blue Ray, so we appreciate its backward compatibility. We do have a large 42 inch HD television, so at some point down the road I am sure we will rent more BluRay. Like one of the other comments, we have DVD players in other rooms, so that also motivates our choice to rent DVDs.

I upgraded to Blu-ray when I bought a PS3 two years ago and absolutely love it. The sound and picture quality are great. I wish there were more Blu-ray options in Redbox. The extra 50 cent charge is worth the better movie viewing experience.

Nope I have not upgraded yet. My dvd player works just fine :) My hubby would like to switch but we can’t afford it and then we would have to upgrade our movies. Too much of a pain. My life is still okay with no bluray LOL

Sticking with my DVD until I have no choice! Which will hopefully be a loong time from now.

I don’t see the point in upgrading…there will always be something “newer” something “better” and people will always want more. We lose the sight of thankfulness when we are constantly giving. We end up with so many items that later won’t be able to be used…8 track tapes, Records, etc. At one time these were hype…why do we all have to be like everyone else….let’s stand out and have more fun and love with our family.

We switched to blu-ray because the tv we bought came with it, and so far i think the quality is great but dvd’s are cheaper so i stick with them until they lower the cost of blu-rays

Yes, I just recently upgraded to Blu-Ray to go with my new HDTV. I only get OTA programming, so it’s nice to have Blu-Ray in order to experience the full beauty of the large, digital HDTV screen!

I can’t tell ENOUGH difference in Blu Ray I really like plain DVD’s and Blu Ray is just another way to make more, and more money off consumers.

We usually buy mostly original dvd’s because we only have the blu ray on ps3 and don’t want to put the wear and tear on that but a really good movie, deserves blu ray.. But waiting for black friday to buy a blu ray…

No – I think some day blue ray will also be replaced and happy with DVD quality at the present time without investing in a blue ray player.

I have a blu ray but not many blu ray movies. Since it plays regulare DVDs. I have too many DVDs to throw away and try to replace with blu ray.
As I buy new movies I will get the combo packs.

Honestly, I don’t see much of a difference in a blu-ray disc compared to the DVD, they’re both discs that contain the information for the films we enjoy and then of course there’s the special features. Honestly, if you don’t have a fifty thousand dollar flat screen TV having a blu-ray player probably wont make much of a difference in my mind. And anyways, if you put the DVD in the Blu-Ray player it makes it just as realistic and “better” as if you had a blu-ray disc in there. No real difference, the media companies are just trying to get us to upgrade again by starting to discontinue the DVD and promoting Blu-Ray, they did it with VHS, but honestly, there’s no real reason to do this. Unless Blu-Rays have some magical remedy that causes them not to get scratched then yes, let’s upgrade, but if not, lets keep the original.

I got a blu-ray player when I got my hdtv. I only have a few blu-ray movies though because they are more expensive. I can see an improvement in picture quality.
