TGIF! Every week on “Freebie Friday”, we offer our readers an opportunity to win free prizes. This week, you have a chance to win a free copy of a DVD or Blu-ray of your choice, just by answering a fun question.
One of the big movie industry news stories this week was the continued growth of Blu-ray at the expense of DVD. Proving there is still an interest in physical media purchases for at least some consumers, the Blu-ray format is still showing steady growth.
To enter this week’s giveaway, simply answer the following question in the comments section below:
Have you upgraded from DVD to Blu-ray?
Tell us why you’re sticking with good old (and good enough) DVD. Or tell us why the superior picture and sound of Blu-ray are worth the cost of upgrading your home theater system and media collection.
On Monday the 24th, we will randomly select a winner from the submitted comments.

I am sticking with my DVD player until DVDs become nonexistent (just like how VHSs turned into DVDs).
Bl-ray is the product of battles going on since before beta vs. Vhs. Then vhs vs laser disc, and laser vs. Dvd. People have already forgot there was a battle between h-dvd vs. Bl-ray and blue won. So I made the switch, the pics better, but the best part of all is its like getting a rokio for free, I can easily watch netflix in gd without my pc hooked to my tv now. Thank you blue ray.
When my DVD player died I bought a Blu-Ray player. I use and buy both. I have no use for all the extras that are often found on Blu-Ray. Older movies look better on DVD with the BR players upscaling then on Blu-Ray. I love the sound quality of Blu-Ray though.
I think I will get a blue-ray eventually, but right now every dollar saved will go a long way (gas, groceries, and the price of children’s clothes…crazy!!!). Thanks Redbox for keeping your rental fees afordable:)
I am sticking with DVD because they will eventually go away like VHS and I can’t afford a Blu-ray player.
I would love to upgrade but Blu Ray is so much more expensive…I’m not sure if its really worth it!
I am sticking to the DVD. If my DVD player were to break, I might buy Blu-ray if it were about the same prices as a DVD player. Money is tight.
I will stick with DVD’s until you can’t find them any longer. It’s too expensive to upgrade all my DVD’s right now. :(
No. I haven’t upgraded from DVD to Blu-ray. It is still expensive and I don’t have big TV screen nor high performance theater sound system (mine is 26″ with no external speakers). I’ll go to theater and enjoy the popcorn.
I made the switch to BluRay a while ago since the players are backward compatible with plain old DVD’s and in many cases the video is upscaled to the 1080p found on the BluRay discs. The picture and audio of BluRay is really amazing especially for action movies.
I was a bit skeptical about all the hype about blue ray but once I tried it out on HD, I was amazed about its great picture and sound. gotta love new technology
I will stick to mostly DVD’s because they are more cost-effective and they have been around longer. I have purchased some Blu-ray discs, but usually in a combo pack, and they are only playable on our Playstation. I just cannot fathom spending the money on a separate player and new theater system, etc when times have been so tight for all of us.
I’m buying a Blu-Ray player this Black Friday, so anything I buy new will be in Blu-Ray. I will not replace the old DVD’s however.
I still like the dvd because is much cheaper and convenient. They have plenty of dvds everywhere expecially 7-eleven and grocery stores but, i can’t help how suberp the blu-ray are when you play it in your Home Theater. Its like being in a Movie Theater. I think there are some movies that worth buying in blu-ray because how good the movie is and how much sound effects are. I admit that they are some movies I want to get on blu-ray but, holding back because of the price. I know that in the future all dvd will be fading away and blu-ray will be here to stay.
Blu-Ray. Much better picture and sound quality. Looks great on the ole big screen HDTV. ;-)
I have both DVD and Blue Ray. I prefer the DVD my husband prefers Blue Ray.
We have accumulated so many DVD’s over the years, it really is not worth it to start over again, as much as my husband would love to do so!!!
I have been pleased with dvd but have seen Blu-ray and am very impressed.
When my funds allow, I will hopefully purchase a Blu-ray device.
No. With the shift to digital content and streaming services, I stopped purchasing DVDs about a year ago. These discs are a worse than a car purchase in that they are immediately only worth 50 cents or a dollar after you buy them. Why would I want to lose even more money by buying costlier Blu-ray discs?
Rental is the only savior here in that $1.50 for a Blu-ray rental vs. $1.00 for DVD is stomachable, assuming one has upgraded from a DVD player to a Blu-ray player.
I own and use a DVD player. I am always satisfied with DVD’s when I rent them from Redbox. The color and clarity of most DVD’s are of good quality. While I do not own a Blu-ray device, I have a friend who has recently purchased one. While watching a movie on Blu ray, I am not very impressed with any differences between that and a DVD. I will be sticking with my DVD player.
I switched to blu ray a few years ago because of the really clear picture, and I appreciate the movie I watch every time.
I have owned a Blu-ray player for years, but still pick DVD’s because they are less expensive to rent, Blu-ray is a better quality picture, but my eyesight sucks, so I really dont’t care if I am watching either one over the other.
Sticking with my DVD player…. I’m old school and to cheap to by a Blu-Ray… Unless I win one, then I will use it! LOL
I will get a Blu-ray when my DVD player dies. I am tired of the constant upgrading that takes place with technology. No need to keep up with the Jones’s. I can still get the “movie experience” with my DVD player. A movie, is a movie on either format and I don’t feel I am missing out on anything by not upgrading.
I HAVE MADE THE SWITCH TO BLURAY. But i won’t be upgrading mh exhisting dvds. The sound is the best part about bluray. You can hear conversation more clearly. If I like a movie enough to own it I buy the bluray dvd combo pack. I still like having the option of watching a movie on my dvd player in the bedroom.
The picture quality of blu ray is not significantly higher than DVD therefore I see no need to pay the price difference between the two. My DVD players plays blu ray, streams videos, links to the internet etc so I’ll continue to buy which ever is cheapest as long as the quality is up to par. No complaints for DVD yet so I’ll stick with it.
As with most “new” things the price is higher at first. Over time the price of blu-ray should come down in price to that of dvd. By 2020 I read dvd’s will be a thing of the past because of blu-ray and streaming. Also by 2020 e-readers will cost $30. I’m wondering what will come next after streaming.
I upgraded to blu-ray when the PS3 came out. Any movies I buy are blu-ray but I’m not upgrading my entire dvd collection. I love the incredible picture and sound the blu-rays offer.
I don’t have the money to switch systems right now though would love to.
I have a PS3 and couldn’t notice much different in graphic quality; However, the sound is a bit more rich with Blue-ray, and for the price different it’s justifiable.
No blu yet because:
1. Not happy about re-buying movies on another form of media. I have waaaaaaay too many DVD’s to replace/upgrade. I still have boxes of old VHS tapes I can’t bear to just throw in the garbage. Maybe there should be a trade in incentive. It would be a perfect example to the actual recycle principle…. instead of just faking it with a recycle logo cut out of the new dvd boxes.
2. Blu ray discs need to drop in price… $20-$40 is not worth the Mediocre content the studios think we want. Special features that are advertisements and kids games are not so special.
3. I Have a friend who is into all of the high end pro electronics. He has a high end Blu ray player who tells me that not all Blu rays are created in the highest quality they are Supposed to be. When Sony licensed the Blu ray brand, they didn’t specify a standard of picture quality that is to be used. Some studios (WB, Disney) do what they want. So you don’t know what kind of picture quality you will be getting.
You shouldn’t have to recalibrate your tv every time you switch discs.
Until these issues are ironed out…I’ll stick with DVD.
Sticking with my old DVD player because Blue Ray Discs and player are too expensive.
I held off getting bluray but finally “gave in” when I get my first hdtv last Christmas. After seeing bluray quality and difference with dvd, it’s hard to go back. I get frustrated with the whole java-based aspect of bluray, (too many hang up, and issues). But the quality is unsurpassed.
I am sticking with DVD until I have money to buy a Blu-ray player or movie companies no longer produce DVD’s.
Sticking with good old DVDs until they are nearly obsolete. No sense in upgrading yet as I’m sure there will be something else to top Blu-Ray in the meantime!
Yes, I have upgraded to a Blu Ray player.
blu-ray is too expensive
I am waiting for my DVD to break before upgrading to a Blu-Ray.
I purchased a blu ray dvd player but rarely buy or rent blu ray. The extra cost is not worth the extra $$.
I am sticking with DVD ,not because Blu-rays are expensive but because we are simple people and we just love our DVD player.
I personally don’t see much difference, So I won’t switch, It’s not worth the extra money, But I did buy a few of the more popular Blu-Ray Movies.
