TGIF! Every week on “Freebie Friday”, we offer our readers an opportunity to win free prizes. This week, you have a chance to win a free copy of a DVD or Blu-ray of your choice, just by answering a fun question.
One of the big movie industry news stories this week was the continued growth of Blu-ray at the expense of DVD. Proving there is still an interest in physical media purchases for at least some consumers, the Blu-ray format is still showing steady growth.
To enter this week’s giveaway, simply answer the following question in the comments section below:
Have you upgraded from DVD to Blu-ray?
Tell us why you’re sticking with good old (and good enough) DVD. Or tell us why the superior picture and sound of Blu-ray are worth the cost of upgrading your home theater system and media collection.
On Monday the 24th, we will randomly select a winner from the submitted comments.

We have not upgraded to Blu-ray. We still have a CRT TV so upgrading to Blu-ray would really do very little for us in terms of quality and we don’t generally watch the extras more than one time. Perhaps if we were to buy a newer LCD television we’d consider it, but even then DVD is good for us. I know we definitely would not re-purchase any DVDs we own on Blu-ray just to have it in a different format. We can likely hold out until whatever comes next without hurting too much.
I haven’t upgraded, but I’ve stopped buying DVDs since I know I will upgrade at some point in the future.
I have not upgraded to Blu-ray yet still watching from my Computer or my older TV until I can afford something more it will do for me for now…It just easier and waiting for something maybe better to come out… I would up grade to a Blu-Ray DVD Player which would be simple than getting a newer TV… This way I could watch Streamline Movie from my Blu-Ray Player too… Once things get better with my I will upgrade to a Blu-Ray DVD Player I been told it so much better, and can’t wait until I get one… But until then I will be ok with what I have.
I upgraded to HD and BluRay years ago.HD equipment has become dirt cheap these days. I bought a 1080p 32″ HDTV off Craigslist recently for $100!! I bought a BluRay drive for my PC which is hooked up to my TV via HDMI and now I’m all set. My laptop has a BluRay drive too for when I travel.
I upgraded to Blu-ray. If it’s a movie I really really like I probably will purchase it on Blu-ray. I still buy some on DVD though. Quality is great on Blu-ray.
Nope. And I see no reason to, currently. DVD’s fine even on my 34″ TV, which is the largest i can reasonably have in my apartment.
I’ve upgraded to Blu-Ray, but depending on the price and desirability of the DVD in question, I still buy regular DVDs.
The cost of upgrading to bluray equipment is absolutely worth it. The extra home theater equipment is not only useful for those interested in bluray. The added bonus of HD television and gaming alone make it a worthwhile investment. As for bluray itself, rewatching a movie that you have never seen in HD is, usually, like watching it for the first time. The enhanced detail in picture and crispness in sound make watching the same old films a brand new experience. There is so much more to look at, which can also lead to finding something in your favorite films that you have never noticed before.
We upgraded the same time we finished our attic. Our hope is for our teenagers to have kids over and let this be a safe place to have fun. We also have pretty much stopped going to the theater except on a rare occasion. We have family movie nights and I pop popcorn on the stove and then about twice a month we clear the living room and my husband and I have a nice date .
I have not upgraded to blueray. DVD’s are still very good media.
We have upgraded some things to Blu-Ray, but other not. Price is the main reason.
I havent because of nothing but finance isssues, but now that Walmart has L-A-Y-A-W-A-Y for the Xmas season. I shall be “makin an upgrade”
I have not upgraded to blueray.
I have upgraded to blu-ray and I love it for certain types of movies. The HD quality and picture are awesome, and you can actually see a few more frames of a movie/show from how smooth it is. I don’t think every thing you buy should be blu-ray but for those action and detailed movies/shows, it is definitely worth getting. Especially now that it is becoming more affordable to purchase the equipment and movies for blu-ray, I think I’ll stick with being able to see the pores on the actors faces in my favorite high-intensity films. :)
I PERSONALLY AM HAPPY WITH THE GOOD OLD DVD.LETS KEEP IT OLD SCHOOL AND OUR MONEY SPENT ON BETTER THINGS
I haven’t upgraded yet. I don’t buy discs, so I will wait until it absolutely makes sense.
We upgraded to blue-ray years ago, My husband thinks it’s grand. I see the difference, but not to the same extent he does.
I am perfectly happy with dvds. I actually still also have a vcr/dvd combo. Things get “upgraded” so often I couldn’t afford to upgrade every time things are “improved”. And I can get regular dvds cheaper :)
I feel it all depends on your TV size. If you have a smaller TV then regular DVD is fine. In my living room I have a 58″ TV. There you can tell DVD is slightly grainy compared to Blue Ray. In my other rooms I have smaller 22″ TV & you really can’t tell the difference.
I bought the Star Wars Blue Ray 6-movie pack. It looks amazing & crystal clear on the Blue Ray 58″ TV.
Upgraded to blue ray 3 years ago. Picture and sound quality is awesome. Only watch regular dvds when blue ray version is not available.
I have been and will be sticking to good old fashion dvd’s for a while. With the economy the way it has been I prefer to provide my family constant entertain from redbox for cheap. However eventually when the time is right I’m sure I will find myself, and my family jumping on the Blu-Ray bandwagon because I have heard only excellent things about it!
Haven’t seen enough difference to fork out the extra cash.
Have not switched. Will stay with DVD for now as once you switch to blue ray, there will be something better. It’s hard to keep up with all of the technology unless you have lots of money for frivolous stuff.
We haven’t upgraded to Bue Ray and don’t plan to. We are very happy with our way of viewing Redbox DVD’s. Not worth the cost and not that noticeable to me!
Yes, I have upgraded to Blu-ray….but I still love DVD.
Depending on the title, I sometimes will re-purchase a film on Blu-ray….especially the Disney animated films. Concerning all other BD purchases, about 50/50 are new titles vs old favorites.
But I find that only about 80% of these purchases were worth the trouble because the other 20% were not any better than their DVD counterparts.
DVD is still such a tried and true format. You can take them anywhere and play them on nearly any disc player. BD has still yet to accomplish that feat.
I have upgraded and love it. Blue ray gives you superior picture and sound. Not to mention alot more content for companies to add on to.
DVD. I have not found the need to upgrade.
I’ve been waiting to install my new plasma TV before making the switch to Blu-ray. Saw on a neighbors TV “Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief” and it was fantastic… better than 3-d movies at theaters. Hoping more titles will be available.
I definitely prefer blu-ray, but that being said I haven’t had the opportunity to switch completely myself. I have a PS3 for playability, but an old 480i CRT screen is the best I can muster yet. I only buy new content on Blu-Ray though so that once I do upgrade the screen it will be the best possible picture from all my newest content.
Of course I upgraded, sound quality is more define, Image is detailed like it was meant to be always seen. I understand why people are reluctant of the change. The cost: DVDs are nos cheaper, collectors take advantage if this and the catalogue is plenty. The blurays are a little pricey in comparison and it is the same movie. Is hard to change when you do not know what you are missing. Even the Blueray equipment enhances the quality of the regular DVD player. Is an obvious choice Blueray over DVD, but the financial situation, pretty much is keeping us in been content with what we had.
My laptop has BluRay but I guess I don’t know what the big deal is with the technology. My television is quite large and has great picture, so I am fine with still using DVDs; however, I think it will out-phase the DVD at some point and I will have to buy a BluRay player and my DVDs will be obsolete like my video cassettes. Wow, feeling old…
Have not upgraded, but it is a going to happen. Like BR for all the extra features, but don’t really like to see the fake makeup and hairlines. If not much of a price difference , I buy the DVD/BR/Digital Combo…this covers all the bases.
I still have good old’ DVD because, well, it’s more than good enough. I have a decent DVD collection, but I don’t buy media anymore – it’s about streaming now. Not to mention that I don’t have an HD TV or HD cable box. Who needs news in HD? If a watch a movie, I watch the movie, not the 6 hours of extras. I guess DVD is not only good enough, it is great enough!
Perhaps I’ll be a dinosaur, much like the folks who stuck with Beta Max, or Laser Disc!! DVDs are still a lot more affordable. $19.99 for a new release DVD vs. $29.99 for a format that is, in my opinion, overkill. Long live DVD and the cost savings that goes along with it!
We currently just use DVDs
I have 2 blu-ray players and I love it. I like the fact that the Ps3 already has a blu-ray player built into it.
No….but I would love too. I still need a HDTV as well. Just waiting on my financial situation to improve or the prices to go down on what I would like to have.
I have not upgraded to Blue Ray because my dvd player works fine and I can’t afford to upgrade.
i still have a dvd player and will upgrade when the dvds stop being able to be rented.
No, not yet. I don’t have a HDTV yet as my 32″ tube is still working great. JVC makes some good products…..
I upgraded my TV with a Samsung LED TV and blueray DVD player and started purchasing many blueray movies, but I noticed that with my new TV and player most regular DVD movies looks as good as the blueray ones. I can’t hardly tell the difference between both formats. It seem that the up-conversion of that DVD player and the crisp definition of the LED TV norrows the quality gap between formats. Now I’m purchasing and renting less blueray movies.
