TGIF! Every week on “Freebie Friday”, we offer our readers an opportunity to win free prizes. This week, you have a chance to win a free copy of a DVD or Blu-ray of your choice, just by answering a fun question.

One of the big movie industry news stories this week was the continued growth of Blu-ray at the expense of DVD. Proving there is still an interest in physical media purchases for at least some consumers, the Blu-ray format is still showing steady growth.

To enter this week’s giveaway, simply answer the following question in the comments section below:

Have you upgraded from DVD to Blu-ray?

Tell us why you’re sticking with good old (and good enough) DVD. Or tell us why the superior picture and sound of Blu-ray are worth the cost of upgrading your home theater system and media collection.

On Monday the 24th, we will randomly select a winner from the submitted comments.

We did upgrade to BluRay but we still buy regular DVDs because BluRay has not got all the features into a standard format yet. Menuing and stop resume are a few features that are not well defined in BluRay. It is annoying to search back to the spot you left off when a BluRay does not retain the last stop point like DVDs do. While some BluRay DVDs do retaim the last stop point (frustrating). Also everyone else has not upgraded yet so to keep our library of DVDs usable to family and friends we are sticking with regular DVDs or BluRay combo packs.

YEARS AGO!!! Don’t you know that all Blu-Ray players are backwards compatable?

I haven’t and have no intention of doing so until I have to. We watch most of our stuff via premium channels now. DVD rental is rare for us.

I have an upconverting DVD player and I don’t see any benefit switching to BluRay.

In order to enjoy blue ray you have to have the right type of tv. Iusually buy the combo packs or rent blue ray when available . much clearer movie . I still rent regular dvd movies and enjoy them just as much.

I think it was worth getting a blu ray. We have a home theatre with a projector. Plus we have a 60″ TV downstairs. When you have those, it doesn’t make sense to to use a reg. DVD. The picture and sound, there is no comparision. We bought 2 PS3’s so we use that for our Blu ray player so we get 2 uses out of it.

I buy both films but mostly blu ray since they are supposed to be better. They cost a lot more though.

Haven’t upgraded to BluRay yet and don’t plan to anytime soon. I’m a (mostly) frugal person, so I need a lot of convincing to pay more for something. In short, I don’t have the type of HDTV to benefit from the higher definition, BluRays are more expensive, and DVDs are still the standard.

I like having my DVD player!!! I have like about hundrends of DVD movies,& If I was 2 chance my DVD for Bluray it would cost a lot of money 2 get all movies in bluray.

I bought my Blu-ray player before they even became popular! I watched a movie in Blu-ray at a friends house and was shocked at the difference! I love Blu-ray!!! How can you go wrong? If it doesn’t come in Blue-ray, you can still watch a straight DVD.

    WE NEED MORE BLU-RAY MOVIES!!!!!

No, blu-rays are still too expensive. I continue to build my DVD collection but when blu-rays go on sale for $6 or less, I purchase them. DVD’s are as good as blu-rays unless you’re into special features and blu-ray live.

Yes we did!! as it has a better sound and picture !!

I buy the ones that have the DVD and digital copies with the bluray!!

I was reluctant to do so as I have boocoos of VHS and DVDs !!

I am sticking wiith DVD. There are not enough movies out on blueray to make it worth the upgrade. Yes the blueray plays regular dvds, but isnt the hole point of the blueray machine for bluerays for the better tv watching experience?

I’m sticking with DVDs so far because it’s just way too expensive to deal with Blu-rays. Have to buy a special player, all the discs are more expensive… meh. I’m content with all my DVDs, picture looks fine :)

I see a slight improvement in picture quality for the BlueRay format but it is not worth a 50% price increase for rentals. I still prefer the DVD format. DVD costs less to rent and it is more versatile in my computers as well as disc players at home.

Finally got a blue ray plalyer a few months ago. My husband found it at Goodwill for like $15 dollars. Couldn’t say no to that! Still get most of my movies on regular DVD’s. Unless the Blue Ray is really cheap (like when Blockbuster stores were going out of business).

As soon as Blu-ray came out, I made the switch and haven’t regretted it since. Blu-ray is superior to DVD in every way except cost, and since there are plenty of Blu-ray sales, even that advantage is negated substantially.

I’m staying with DVD because Blu-Ray is to expensive and I have an extensive DVD movie collection. When the price comes down then MAYBE I will spring for Blu-Ray. The economy has a lot to do with my purchase decisions.

BluRay def has better definition but I will not get rid of all my DVDs for bluRay it is always nice to go back like videocassettes!!! It is always nice to remember the old. It’s like Nintendo I was so excited to see one the other day!!
