TGIF! Every week on “Freebie Friday”, we offer our readers an opportunity to win free prizes. This week, you have a chance to win a free copy of a DVD or Blu-ray of your choice, just by answering a fun question.

One of the big movie industry news stories this week was Universal and Comcast’s abrupt decision to cancel their plans for $60 premium video-on-demand (VOD) rentals of the upcoming Eddie Murphy movie, Tower Heist. The great majority of commenters on this website said that there was no way they would pay anywhere near that price to watch a movie at home a few months early.

The drama surrounding Tower Heist got us thinking about the experience of watching a movie in theaters versus the experience of watching one at home.

To enter this week’s giveaway, simply answer the following question in the comments section below:

Which do you prefer: the movie theater or home theater experience?

Are the delicious popcorn and the thrill of being there on opening night worth the sticky floors and texting teens that come with the movie theater experience? Or do you prefer the comfort of your own couch and your own TV?

On Monday the 17th, we will randomly select a winner from the submitted comments. The winner will receive a free DVD or Blu-ray copy of a movie of their choice (to watch in your home theater!). Multiple comments will disqualify you, so please respond just once.

Definitely home. Convenience is only one factor, cost of a theatre now being a big one, I simply put my money in a superior system that I can watch at my convenience! No interruptions from others as well, Thanx

home, ALONE. a movie is a date. i went to a movie twice, many years apart, alone. it was horribly lonely and i felt very out of place. not to mention the cost, getting there, being there at a specific time — no way jose. and attention span — i’ll take my at-home venue any day.

Love to watch movies with my Yorkie on my lap in my pajamas while eating homemade popcorn and drinking a cold beer. You can’t do this in a theater!

Home is easier and movies look great on 70″ LED TV, works best with small children. We rent multiple RedBox DVD’s and watch throughout our home on multiple TV’s and everyone wins. Thank You REDBOX!

Love movie theater for action movies but home for any other type.

While the huge screen at the movies is great, the cost of getting in to see it isn’t so great. I prefer staying home and being able to watch what I want, when I want, with who I want, and no crying babies or obnoxious talkers to keep me from hearing the movie. And I can watch as many movies as I can stay awake for! So definitely home is better than out anymore.

I still love the drive-in experience and luckily we have a drive-in here with 2 screens and both play double features all summer. And all for $6/adult!! THANK YOU Holiday Twins in Ft Collins for staying in business and not selling out your land! We love you!

Home theater is the only way to go. Blu-ray players put out sharper and brighter quality with a large screen HDTV, and the home theater audio systems with subwoofers, etc., are much cheaper today than ten years ago and just too good to pass up. Then, you can pause and run to the bathroom, get some refreshments, or whatever. Plus, no talking from people you don’t know! No crying babies or talking kids, and if you do have a disruption, pause it until the crisis is over, or even back up to see what you missed. There simply is no comparison.

Depends on the movie. Some movies lose so much in the transition. Movies with small details need to be experienced on the big screen.

Home with my honey. We can recline back, with popcorn, lights out and the dog snuggled up with us. Then enjoy the show!

I PREFER THE HOME EXPERIENCE MUCH MORE THE POPCORN IS MUCH HEALTHIER THAN AT THE THEATER AND WE EVEN MAKE KETTLE CORN IN THE MICROWAVE THAT’S HEALTHY.. I CAN STOP IT WHEN I HAVE SOMETHING TO DO AND GO BACK TO IT AS WELL…DONT MISS OUT ON ANYTHING JUST TO RUN TO THE BATHROOM LIKE AT A THEATER. …THE COST AS WELL IS A MAJOR FACTOR. I HAVE BAD EYES AND THE 3 D IS NOT FOR ME IT JUMPS AROUND LOT FOR MY SELF AND HUSBAND AND A FEW OTHER FRIENDS A AND IS SO LOUD CANT STAND THE CHAIRS SHAKING DURING SOME SCENES…. LETS JUST MAKE IT CLEAR THE THEATER EXPERIENCE HAS BECOME VERY UNFAVORABLE WITH ALL THEIR ADDITIONS TO MAKE THE MOVIE MORE REAL..

I prefer going to a theater. The gigantic screen and mega surround sound system make watching movies so awesome.

Definitely at home. Theaters have become way to expensive! Plus, you don’t have the interruptions of others during the movie.

I like going to the movies but prefer the at home experience you don’t have to worry about the talkers next to you or someone head in front of you blocking the view. You get the nice full in control movie experience. I have been a loyal redbox customer since day one! Thanx redbox!!

There is no alternative of watching a movie in a big screen in a theater, along with the great sound system.

I prefer going to the theaters. The bigger widescreen and the surround sound, make watching movies an experience.

If I have the widescreen HD TVs at home with surround sound system then I do not need to go to the theaters, since they are becoming expensive day by day. Also at home I can pause and rewind a movie, watch whenever I want, wherever I want and that is also cheaper.

I love watching movies at home. When I score some free tickets (I’ve won 2 for the upcoming Puss and Boots), then I’ll take my kids. To save on movie snacks, I have a Regal frequent user card, I go on the cheap popcorn day (Tuesday), someone also gifted me a Regal gift card, and I’ve played the M&M’s instant-win game & scored some concession savings.

I prefer my own home. You can’t pause the movie, if you need to, at a movie theatre. Plus, you just can’t get comfortable at the theatre. Although, it is nice to have a night out at a theatre every now and then. :)

Always prefer the big screen at the theater. Nothing
    beats the theater experience.
Although sometimes it seems like I get a better
picture on my on Plasma screen.
At home it’s nice to be able to pause a movie if nature calls.

My preference of venue for watching movies, is my home. However, if posed with this question, fifteen years ago, hands-down my answer would have been the theater!
At my current age, it is convenient to have a bathroom close by and the option to pause movies while utilizing the facilities! In addition, there is no one to “ssh” me while I add commentary or sit in front of me, blocking my view. My home theater comes with an open bar and no designated driver is required! The munchies are cheaper and options, greater. And, if my husband and I want to “neck”, there is no one around to point and giggle at the “old couple” making out in the movie theater!
Yes, I prefer the $10.00 movie experience to the $35.00 one!

I like the “idea” of going out to a movie theater, it feels like something special. BUT … with the ridiculous expense, horrible popcorn, noisy people, travel & parking hassles, etc., I like watching movies at home much better. I can kick back in my PJs, with my healthy popcorn, no distractions, and can pause it any time I need to exit. :)

I prefer watching movies at home–I like being able to hit the Pause-button, rewind the great scenes, etc.

I prefer to watch movies in the theater because of the big screen and surround sound. Also, i cant fully enjoy the movie without having to pause every few minutes while a family member uses the bathroom lol.

I prefer to watch movies at the theatre but because it is nice to go out and do something different and I love movie popcorn. But with the price of movie tickets these days it is not often that I go to a theatre. Unless I go to one of the discount theatres that I attend where $4 for a movie is reasonable but they are usually a little older but fine with me.

Prefer going to the theater to watch a movie. I’m a Frugal Fran, so the hubby and I typically go to a twilight show or on a weekday that the local theater has discount movie tickets. Nothing beats seeing a movie on a movie screen in a theater, and I know the mark-up is ridiculous, but we love indulging in movie theater popcorn.

I prefer watching movies at home to going to the theater. That is not to say we don’t venture out to the movies when there is something that we just can’t wait to see, overall, watching at home is best with me.

Each has its advantages. For everyday, I enjoy watching at home, on my own schedule, in my jammies, etc. But for a night out, a movie and that really unhealthy movie theatre popcorn, is hard to beat.
