TGIF! Every week on “Freebie Friday”, we offer our readers an opportunity to win free prizes. This week, you have a chance to win a free copy of a DVD or Blu-ray of your choice, just by answering a fun question.
One of the big movie industry news stories this week was Universal and Comcast’s abrupt decision to cancel their plans for $60 premium video-on-demand (VOD) rentals of the upcoming Eddie Murphy movie, Tower Heist. The great majority of commenters on this website said that there was no way they would pay anywhere near that price to watch a movie at home a few months early.

The drama surrounding Tower Heist got us thinking about the experience of watching a movie in theaters versus the experience of watching one at home.
To enter this week’s giveaway, simply answer the following question in the comments section below:
Which do you prefer: the movie theater or home theater experience?
Are the delicious popcorn and the thrill of being there on opening night worth the sticky floors and texting teens that come with the movie theater experience? Or do you prefer the comfort of your own couch and your own TV?
On Monday the 17th, we will randomly select a winner from the submitted comments. The winner will receive a free DVD or Blu-ray copy of a movie of their choice (to watch in your home theater!). Multiple comments will disqualify you, so please respond just once.

I prefer the home theater better because you can pause or rewing the movie back, and go pick werever you want in the kitchen at any time. Plus you can be more in confort (laid in the sofa or couch) that in the movie, You can’t go to the bathroom or buy more popcorn because you will miss part of the movie. Plus is to expencsive going to the movies now. If you have a good big scren TV and sound system, Tem close the windows haaa. You dot’n miss nothing and I make popcorn and have a nice soda or better a cold beer in hand or better order a pizza. Plus you can watch more thatn one movie with out going bankruty.
I would rather watch the movie in the privacy of my home where I can stop the movie and take a break when I need to and not be bothered with someone that would make me irritated by interrupting something that I would miss, that way I can rewind the movie and watch that part again if I didn’t understand something. And if I want to enjoy a fire in the fireplace or have a glass of wine then…..I have it all in the comfort of my home.
I like the movie theater best I think for the popcorn! I also enjoy getting to see the big picture and it just makes for a nice night out with the kids too. Our theater only charges $2 per movie so we go almost every weekend when possible. Keeps the family doing fun family things together and we always talk about it later too!
I <3 Love <3 the movie theater experience.. eating popcorn, drinking a coke, getting to *get* out of the house. It's a *real* treat for us to be able to go to the movie theaters~
Thanks for the opportunity to win this~
I really enjoy the movie theatre for the ridiculously buttery popcorn and the big screen experience. It’s fun to go out for an event like a movie :) Unfortunately you do get the side-kickers sometimes… grr…
I prefer the home theater experience because I have the option of watching it in the comfort of my nice cozy bed or watching it in the living room with my kids while we eat popcorn!
Home theater has to rule, No lines for the bathroom, pick your own chair, no one with hat or big hair in front of you, fix your own snack and you want break the bank, and oh yeah, house shoes are very acceptable… the pause button works great…
Movie Theatre, my home setup is nowhere near as nice.
I prefer having all the comforts of home! Start/stop when you like, take a break, have a snack, at my convenience.
i prefer the inhome experience. With two small children both under age two theaters arent the best yet. Not only that but you dont have to worry about all background chitter chatter. Also suppose you need to use the bathroom or get an important phone call or just get caught up in the moment you can pause or stop and come right back to where you were at!!!
So much better at home! I don’t have to worry about where or who’s hands have been touching my food. Not to gross you out or anything, but think about someone having lice and then leaning back in those chairs where your head goes. Somebody sneezing and putting their hands on the armrest. And you can forget Netflix as my movie choice. Redbox is so convenient that I can drive two minutes away to get my movie right now. No streaming video with no sound quality or loss of visual quality. There’s nobody telling me I can’t talk during a movie or being annoyed by the people that are seeing the movie again and giving spoilers behind me. Nobody kicking my seat! The joys of having a bathroom not shared by thousands of people in the same day.
Home Theater…I have spent way too much money on it!
Home. At least in my living room, I’m not disturbed by a half dozen cell phones turned on during the movie. I can also turn on subtitles, rewind, stop…or do it over if I fall asleep.
Home!!! I absolutely love renting movies from redbox for only $1 a night and you can pick what time you want to watch the movie. Put your jammies on, grab your munchies and soda and kick back and ENJOY!!!!! It’s way cheaper and more convienent. I LOVE LOVE LOVE Redbox!!!!!!!!!!!
Movie Theater…..big screen…hands down ( or is that what my girlfriend used to say when I was a teenager ? )……anyway, big screen, definitely
Home for sure. I can get up, pause the movie and get something to eat or use the bathroom anytime.
I like going out to the movie theater. It’s a good excuse to get out of the house and see the movie on a big screen.
Going to the theater is great… it has just gotten so expensive, I only go every once in a while
I enjoy going to the movie – the sites, sounds, and excitement of going on opening weekend. I really enjoy movies so anytime I can see one either home or in theater I will.
I like watching movies at home. It’s reasonable, can stop and get a snack or visit the bathroom without missing anything. Also if there is a part you want to see again, not a problem!
i prefer watching movies AT HOME cause i can lay in bed with the remote and make my own popcorn…. no sticky floors here, and no big heads sitting in front of me… i’m a screamer – so at home i don’t bother anyone and my family enjoys the movies as well… thanks and i hope i win
LIke the home. No need to miss what is playing while using the restroom or getting a snack or drink, listening to the kids on the phones, babies crying………
I like Home Theathre better because I can lay in bed or on the couch and watch the movie….go to the bathroom and pause the movie whenever I want and watch it at whatever time I want to!
I enjoy movie theatre. Gets you out of the house and you won’t find a bigger screen than at the movies and there is nothing like theatre popcorn with extra butter…yum!
I will choose home any day unless i know i can go when maybe ppl my age because younger ppl throwing popcorn or being loud make it hard for me to hear and it makes it hard for me to not tell them that they are rude, disrespectful and need to go home. So with that I love my surround sound turned up loud and I am at the movies at home and oh how good it feels with shoes off and lounged over on the couch.
THANKS REDBOX HOPE I WIN BUT IF NOT JUST MAKE SURE ITS SOMEONE WHO APPRECIATES IT NOT EVERYONE DOES..
THANKS EVERYONE ENJOY UR NIGHT
Home on my TV. Hard of hearing so I need subtitles. So there is very little choice for me.
We prefer the home theater experience for sure! That being said, the big screen movie theater experience has it’s place; epic, best picture oscar-winning movies are bomb on that huge screen or if that’s in the plans for the rare occasion when my husband has time for a “date night.” However, coming into our AARP years, the extreme prices of concessions at the theater as well as the tickets themselves aren’t near as desirable as changing into nightgear, curling up on a comfy couch, gathering all our kids (& their friends) and having dinner and a movie together. All for a much lower price! You can get 8 to 10 redbox movies for the price of 1 ticket, I mean, that’s a no-brainer and a good time!
At home is my answer. The comfort, facilities, ease to get a snack or a break which at my age I need very much. You can also play back, use titles, so many things you cannot do in a theatre.
Home theater all the way. No crying babies. Popcorn costs a fraction of the price. Unless it’s a movie I’m dying to see and I know there will be a bunch of fanboys there it’s not really worth going.
I prefer my home theater because I can pause the movie if I need to go to the restroom, and I do not miss any of the movie. Plus it is cheaper to watch movies at home. I do not have to spend almost $10 a person plus all the expensive snacks and drinks. Another great thing about watching movies at home is I do not have to deal with other people making noises throughout the movie, or someone getting in the way of the screen while I am trying to view my movie of choice.
Depends on the movie: if it has a strong fan base, like a movie adapted from a comic book, then nothing beats the theater! If it’s not, I’m content with watching it at home, in most cases.
I’d much rather watch at home….at my own speed, loudness, in my pj’s if I want!
Home cuz home is where the heart is!!
Nothing beats a movie theatre experience. The picture and sound quality are superior. Plus, the popcorn always tastes better there. However, I would prefer the comfort of my own home and couch. The seats in the theatre become quite uncomfortable when you’re watching a long movie. Also, you never get to pick who sits next to you. They can be really annoying. So, I prefer the picture and sound quality of the theatre and the popcorn, but I prefer the comfort of my own home and my back, neck, and tush appreciate it too.
I prefer a nice theater because of the screen size & sound. However our local theaters haven’t been renovated in years & have tons of problems. I usually only go to the theater if I absolutely can’t wait on a movie.
The theater, by all means. A time for the family to go somewhere special. The huge screen and interaction with the other watchers. Of course the snack bar. It just seems very special.
I prefer the movie night at home. I enjoy the fact I can afford to have an unlimited number of people to gather and watch a movie. Better yet, a movie marathon. I love the ability to be at my most comfy, in my pj’s with no makeup, plopped on the couch piled high with pillows and my favorite blanket, light the fireplace and what a great way to spend a day or night!
I prefer to watch movies at home. You can (usually) use closed captioning with a DVD so you don’t miss any of the actors’ great lines! Also, you can playback great scenes!
There’s no place like home….Costs less, more variety of eats, drinks, pause mode to go to the restroom, more room to relax, able to puff my cigar if I so choose….I could list another 25 reasons why I like movies at home…
I enjoy watching at the movie theater because the popcorn seems to taste better. And with the big screen I feel like I’m in the action. I get more excited about a certain scene and I don’t have to strain my eyes at the movie theater to see the picture.
