TGIF! Every week on “Freebie Friday”, we offer our readers an opportunity to win free prizes. This week, you have a chance to win a free copy of a DVD or Blu-ray of your choice, just by answering a fun question.

One of the big movie industry news stories this week was Universal and Comcast’s abrupt decision to cancel their plans for $60 premium video-on-demand (VOD) rentals of the upcoming Eddie Murphy movie, Tower Heist. The great majority of commenters on this website said that there was no way they would pay anywhere near that price to watch a movie at home a few months early.

The drama surrounding Tower Heist got us thinking about the experience of watching a movie in theaters versus the experience of watching one at home.

To enter this week’s giveaway, simply answer the following question in the comments section below:

Which do you prefer: the movie theater or home theater experience?

Are the delicious popcorn and the thrill of being there on opening night worth the sticky floors and texting teens that come with the movie theater experience? Or do you prefer the comfort of your own couch and your own TV?

On Monday the 17th, we will randomly select a winner from the submitted comments. The winner will receive a free DVD or Blu-ray copy of a movie of their choice (to watch in your home theater!). Multiple comments will disqualify you, so please respond just once.

I prefer home most of the time. It’s quieter, the ability to pause(very important), and cheaper. I’ll still go to the theater but only for a big action movie that is a big screen must see.

Christina is on the money. With great home systems, the ability to pause to go to the bathroom along with the cost why wouldn’t you stay home. Also don’t forget no annoying people talking during the movie. If you get that at home you can just send them to their room. :)

I would say that it all depends on the movie. If it is an epic, definitely need it on the big screen. There is just something about the level of detail that is seen in the big screen experience. I even just found that the audience effect of the big screen is great for comedies. There is nothing like an entire audience laughing together. But I would say the vast majority of movies, I’m fine with at home.

Always at home is the best. I don’t want to deal with people talking or waiting around for the movie to start. At home I just put in the video, lean back in the recliner and crank up the surround.

Home theater is great. I can sit in my pj’s, make lots of noise, and go to the snackbar as much as I want. Unless my wife & kids are watching with me!!
Then I get into trouble and told to be quiet (like at theater). Loving the Red Box!!

    ..Hi..
…Each venue has it’s advantages and disadvantages…It really does depend on the film…
..I guess if I am looking for an experience, I would pick a theater..

I prefer home theater experience rather than going to Cinema Hall. Its very comfort and enjoyable to watch movie on bluray on ur home theater on my 50 inch LED TV.

I like being at home. We get all our snacks together, grab our pillows and blankets make comfy pallets on the floor and couch, line up what we want to watch turn down or off the lights lay back and enjoy.

Being at home. It’s comfortable, you can cuddle up next to the one you love. You can pause or replay.

I really love them both for different reasons! I love the whole movie theater experience but its really expensive. My family an I have Redbox family movie night every weekend and it is so much better than going to the theater because my whole family is invited and all it costs is a dollar. We really love spending that time together. :)

I’d rather see it on the big screen. usually won’t go to the theatre unless I have a pass or a discount coupon. current admissin prices are way to high.

It’s cool to go out and spend 40$ on a movie night once in a while but I definitely prefer the home experience. That is untill they let u take bongloads in the theater.

I really prefer to see a movie at home for several reasons. The price is right, you can pause when need to, you can watch a movie in the middle of the night and I only go to the theatre when it is free or someone else is paying for it. The economy has really hit me hard. I am self employed!!!!

I prefer to rent and watch a movie at home….

Home, because people don’t know how to behave anymore in a theater. They’ll kick the back of your chair, talk during the movie, check their cell phones, text, bring their crying babies, etc.

We watch all of our movies at home: it’s free from the library, Redbox, and Blockbuster Express (with codes), our dog is happy to lounge with us, and there’s no toxic cloud of fragrance to give my wife an instant migraine. Ugh!

Watching a movie at home beats having to get dressed & be a the the movie theater at a certain time. I love to be able to watch a movie when I’m good & ready, & eat or drink what ever & how much I want. Once in a blue moon I wouldn’t mind going to the theater but would rather stay home with the the kids so I can pause it when we need to go the the bathroom or get something to eat.

I’m not sure, sometimes I prefer home so you don’t have to deal with people talking and lines.

We like it best at home. You have all your snacks here and it’s much cheaper because the popcorn has gone up in price in several theatres. You can go for a break when you want and then come back to finish the movie. You can cuddle next to your loved ones as well. There is no travel time included here because you are already home. you also save on gas so it’s a win win here.

Definitely home. Pause button, much cleaner than a theatre, jammies if wanted. Much more comfortable atmosphere, plus if the movie is terrible, we aren’t out a small fortune!

I myself would rather watch a movie in the comfort of my own home, because you can play and reward, and pause the movie when ever you want, and there’s no lines to stand in ,no high prices to pay, no rude people and no body that you don’t know sitting next to you, “never mind if you have to use they restroom” that’s another line……so that what i think? ty

I always prefer to watch a movie in the comfort of my own home, no annoying cell phone ringing or annoying teenagers texting on their phone during the movie. Plus the cost is a major factor, I spend $5 or less on a movie, depending on if I want to own it or just want to rent from Redbox, so going to a theater and paying a minimum of $8.50 admission + high priced popcorn/drink is out of the question for me.

Home Theater by a landslide. We use a Panasonic projector to display on our wall, using the library for all he free movies and TV shows we want.

With today home theater… I would say most movies are great to watch at home… but there are some movies that are worth seeing on the big screen.

Beside at home I can choose what treats I want and what type of ingredients are in them.

The home theater experience. The growing crowds, screaming kids and constant use of phones make it impossible to enjoy a movie in the theater these days.

Movies should be watched in a theater on the big screen as they are intended

home theater is definitely the way to go when you have kids: food, interuptions, bathroom breaks.. I never see the entire movie when we go to the movies; and I am broke $ when I done.

Jt depends completely on the movie! For instance, seeing the latest Tron in Imax was amazing and unmissable! So we rented it and watched it at home, and it was nothing like the theater experience! many movies are fine if we see them first at home, but a movie like Tron would be very disappointing.

With 3 kids it is hard to get out and watch a movie at the theatre. I prefer watching them when they come out on Bluray and DVD so I can pause them at anytime.

Home Theater! Unless, it’s a BIG action Blockbuster, that NEEDS to be seen on a the “Big Screen”. i.e. “Avatar”, “Transformers”, etc.- It’s cheaper-more comfortable-quieter- NO SCREAMING KIDS and NO cell phones. I enjoy the option to (pause), for bathroom and snack breaks. The pause feature is (also) nice to have, if and when the “Mr. Skin” moments pop up in a movie. You can freeze the frame and/or slow it to a frame-by-frame movement. ;-) I can eat McDonalds during the movie and not get mean stares or comments. AND (if I want) I can watch the movie in my underwear. I’ll stick to Redbox-Netflix and Graboid Video, where, I can (sometimes), download and watch a movie, on my TV, that’s still in theaters. Nice. Cheers!

I love the home theatre better than going to the movies- less crowds, I can use the bathroom and pause the movie, make popcorn at my leisure and relax in a more comfortable sofa.

I like watching a movie better in my home because we have an awsome stero system and it’s like watching a movie in a movie theater.
