TGIF! Every week on “Freebie Friday”, we offer our readers an opportunity to win free prizes. This week, you have a chance to win a free copy of a DVD or Blu-ray of your choice, just by answering a fun question.

One of the big movie industry news stories this week was Universal and Comcast’s abrupt decision to cancel their plans for $60 premium video-on-demand (VOD) rentals of the upcoming Eddie Murphy movie, Tower Heist. The great majority of commenters on this website said that there was no way they would pay anywhere near that price to watch a movie at home a few months early.

The drama surrounding Tower Heist got us thinking about the experience of watching a movie in theaters versus the experience of watching one at home.

To enter this week’s giveaway, simply answer the following question in the comments section below:

Which do you prefer: the movie theater or home theater experience?

Are the delicious popcorn and the thrill of being there on opening night worth the sticky floors and texting teens that come with the movie theater experience? Or do you prefer the comfort of your own couch and your own TV?

On Monday the 17th, we will randomly select a winner from the submitted comments. The winner will receive a free DVD or Blu-ray copy of a movie of their choice (to watch in your home theater!). Multiple comments will disqualify you, so please respond just once.

The big screen is always the best experience, but you the convenience of the home theater is great.

For action movies & movies with lots of special effects. I only tend to go during matinees unless it’s a movie I’m waiting for opening night (like any twilight saga film). Otherwise, I’m happy to watch them at home where I can pause & rewind at will.

There’s no place like home. Its cheaper and more ppl will be more than willing to take part in the experience especially if you make it a movie party or something where everyone brings something to share. More of a social experience at home.

I would say at home with redbox of course! It costs to much to go out to the theater, and my home is much more comfortable!

Can’t beat the big screen. The theater is the place for the “big” movies. Transformers just ain’t the same on my TV.

We see all 3D movies on the Big Screen because its not possible to Rent 3D movies from Redbox and the effects aren’t as good as the theater.

I love a good movie at home, and i can stop at anytime, rewind parts and pretty much watch it any way like. I am lucky enough to have seround sound and a beautiful t.v. so i dont have to wait in no line and pay an arm and a leg. i just drive down to my nearest redbox and rent away++++++

I love the movie theater experience because of the size of the screen. Watching it on the big screen makes you feel like you are part of the movie.

I prefer home because we have surround sound and a Samsung 3D tv and Blue Ray. I prefer home because we watch all action movies using the projector. I enjoy being able to stop, fast forward, pause when getting something to eat or restroom breaks.

I love the theater just not the price. View is awesome most of the time.

It depends on the movie. The ones with special visual effects are always better on the big screen. For those other ones, it’s nice to be able to rewind to hear or see something that was missed.

The big screen, of course! The fresh smell of popcorn as you enter the theatre, mmm there’s nothing better!

I prefer the Theatre, but unless it’s a matinee I really can’t afford it. I will rent it when it comes out and watch it at home with popcorn, lights out and I buy boxes of movie candy from walgreens. You can’t beat the price for a 1 night rental.

I like a home theater! If you have it all set up with a big screen and your own popcorn maker and comfy chairs! Not that I have any of that…it would just be great! :)

Depends on the Movie. If it has a lot of new/special graphics that “need” to be seen on a big screen, than in the theater. Otherwise at home.

I guess it depends on your home theater system. I enjoy going to the movies every once in a while (my husband hates it!) For the price, watching in the comfort of your home wins hands down. I can own the movie for less than taking my family to the theater to see it one time.

I can have just as much fun watching movies at home on my big HD plasma 3D screen, eating my popcorn and be able to drink what I want without the extra cost, and if I want I can lounge around in my pj’s and really be comfy all curled up on the couch watching my favorite movie.

I enjoy the quiet of watching a movie at home – without the sticky floors, people talking during the movie, and interruptions of people walking around during the movie. However, I do like the big screen and sound quality much better at home. I think movies are getting really expensive and I generally can wait until they hit DVD to purchase it or rent.

I love to go to the theater, but I agree with everyone else that it’s just too expensive, where they charge about $10, especially if the movie is in 3-D. I love to see peoples reactions inside the theater, whether it’s a horror movie, where a lot of people scream or a comedy where I can laugh with everyone. This year, I’ve only gone to a movie theater just twice, plan to go see Paranormal Activity with my family, but not the premier, I have to wait until Tuesday, because all movies are discount to less than $6.00 per person.

I’m sure, like many others, I’ve rented all of my movies from Netflix, even with the new price increase, I see a bunch of TV Shows and Movies to steam on my TV, and from Redbox. Redbox send me codes every month, to check out a Free movie and I also buy Slurpees from 7/11 stores. With the codes on the Slurpee you can get Redbox codes to check out movies for Free.

If I had to pick one, I would rather watch movies at home with my family and friends. If I were to go with my family I would spend about $50 for the tickets and about $20 for snacks, but most of the time I sneak in my food. This is how it works for me.

I greatly prefer the theatre experience to the home experience. Even though I have a wide variety of home viewing options (from iPad to 61″), watching a movie in a theatre with (respectful) strangers is far better. Generally speaking, there are far fewer distractions in a theatre than at home.

I prefer the home experience because one does not have to deal rude people that won’t quit talking, texting or using their c-phones. Sometimes, you can have teenagers groping and getting it on. Another reason for the home experience is you can pause the movie and take a bathroom break, get snacks and rewind any parts you may have missed. Also, it has gotten super expensive with the prices they charge nowadays. With surround sound, big screen tvs, I’ll take the home experience. Thanks.

Prefer watching movies in the comfort and perfectly set up sound system of my home! I don’t like waiting for the movies to come to DVD, but I’m learning patience!

I love watching movies in the theater–surrounded by others, sharing a communal experience. However, the cost is sometimes high (the 3D movie prices are too much in general) to go at night. I hate shelling out for a night out at a movie and having other theater-goers ruin the experience with their cell phones or otherwise rude behavior, something I don’t have to put up with at home. We have a big screen home theater that we use for most movies–going out to the movies is a treat a few times a year, but we are far more likely to Redbox. :-)

I’m old enough to remember when you couldn’t buy movies, let alone set up your own home theater…of course movies and food at the cinema was a lot cheaper then. Today, we own a HUGE tv with blue-ray, have a wonderful surround-sound system, and a stadium-style lounge/sofa set-up. I’d rather watch a movie from Redbox at home with family and friends (in jammies, with pillows and plush throws) over the cinema any day of the week! No worries about chatty-patty talking louder than the film behind you…no one kicking the back of your seat…no technical-issues and rainchecks…no outrageous food and beverage costs….and no cinemuck in your seat or under foot! Yay Redbox and family/friend-togetherness!

It depends on the movie. If it is one that is beautifully shot or has great special effects I will pay to see it in the theater. But if it doesn’t have those characteristics, I usually wait and watch it at home. We are careful with $ and a $10 admission/person plus $6 small popcorn (!!!!), is usually not worth the theater experience for most movies. More and more we watch Netflix streaming, pick up a Redbox or reserve at our library…

Home theater is my preference…no annoying chair kickers or talkers, no $20 for a coke and popcorn, & you can pause it!

I like going to the theater only if its a movie that i absolutely CANNOT wait until it comes out on dvd. i much prefer being at home though where you can choose your seating, you can pause if need be, and you can relax more

The home theater experience because nothing beats the comfort of your own home.

Most of the time I prefer the home experience. I have a young child so it makes it a lot more convenient. Occasionally my husband and I will drop her with her grandparents and go see a movie but we generally go to the drive in since we get two movies for 7$ a person and we can bring whatever food we want. So when it comes to theatre versus home… Home will win everytime id much rather grab a redbox movie I have not seen and pick up some take out snuggle up on the couch and be able to pause and take care of my daughter if needed.

I prefer seeing the big screen, hearing the surround sound, and laughing at peoples reactions when something scary pops up on the screen. I see the home experience would nice if you were going to the movies as a big family. I would never turn down the theatre over my tv. In this case size does matter.

Easy. Home. I’ve got a big TV and a dark room. I can make popcorn that’s 10x better than the oiled up stuff they sell for $5/bag and I can have a beer instead of a watered down 45oz soda. Plus, I can pause the movie for anything from a bathroom break to a trip to IMDB to figure out where I saw an actor before.

Oh, and if I like the movie I can watch it again without leaving the room first.

I like both, but for convenience and price we can’t beat the home theatre experience. Some movies it’s nice to see in the theatre, surrounded by other fans (Twilight, Harry Potter!), but with the high prices, annoyances of the other moviegoers, and my kids having to go to the bathroom (and thus making me miss part of the movie!) I’ll take a pass on that for when I can go and leave the kids at home. At least at home, if you need to get up to make more snacks, go to the bathroom, etc. you can pause the movie and not miss anything…and don’t have to worry about others getting upset if you want to make a comment to your family/friends who are watching it with you.

It depends on the movie, it’s a big movie with tons of EFX that you HAVE to see on the big screen to appreciate it, I will go BUT never on opening weekend and usually during a matinee so it’s cheaper!! Otherwise, I prefer to rent one and stay home!!!
