TGIF! Every week on “Freebie Friday”, we offer our readers an opportunity to win free prizes. This week, you have a chance to win a free copy of a DVD or Blu-ray of your choice, just by answering a fun question.

One of the big movie industry news stories this week was Universal and Comcast’s abrupt decision to cancel their plans for $60 premium video-on-demand (VOD) rentals of the upcoming Eddie Murphy movie, Tower Heist. The great majority of commenters on this website said that there was no way they would pay anywhere near that price to watch a movie at home a few months early.

The drama surrounding Tower Heist got us thinking about the experience of watching a movie in theaters versus the experience of watching one at home.

To enter this week’s giveaway, simply answer the following question in the comments section below:

Which do you prefer: the movie theater or home theater experience?

Are the delicious popcorn and the thrill of being there on opening night worth the sticky floors and texting teens that come with the movie theater experience? Or do you prefer the comfort of your own couch and your own TV?

On Monday the 17th, we will randomly select a winner from the submitted comments. The winner will receive a free DVD or Blu-ray copy of a movie of their choice (to watch in your home theater!). Multiple comments will disqualify you, so please respond just once.

The movie theather experience is fun; but way too expensive these days. I have a family of 5, to actually go to the movies would cost the same as our electric bill !!!! I perfer to watch at home :D Plus you can pause when the little ones need to use the restroom, you don’t end up missing any of the movie you would have paid an arm and leg to go to the theater to see LOL

I have to say I like the big theater experience best. I know money can be a problem, but no a days you have to be smart and look for your deals. For example one theater I go to has a card that you swipe every time you go to the box office, as well as at concessions. You earn points which are good for free drinks, free popcorn and even better FREE MOVIES. And no you don’t need an absurd amount of points for the free movie either! Another theater we go to offers at the beginning of the year movie goers to buy a souvenir cup for $8 and a souvenir shirt for $10. The cup is good for the rest of that year for $1 refills, and the t-shirt (just bring it with you) allows for $1 Medium popcorn. Have a bigger group upgrade to a large and your only paying $2 for that large popcorn! Nothing beats the Big screen when it comes to a really good movie!

We prefer to rent a film with the kids. It’s not worth the hustle and bustle and $12 popcjorn to find that while one of them address the movie…the other two are fake wretching out of boredom. And as a mom, I don’t have to miss half the movie at home taking a little one to the restroom.

Even date night out has been replaced with a quiet night at home with a good flick.

I prefer to watch at home where I can relax and enjoy the movie at my leisure in comfort. Only thing thats missing is if we could get some good popcorn that would compare to what you get there!

I prefer to watch movies from red box on my big 60 inch plasma tv..with my surround sound system..with the sound turned up really loud for the walls shake..and the neighbors can hear it also…that’s my movie time..

I would rather watch at home because then I can fit it to my schedule – I like to watch in the middle of the night. And sometimes the theaters are uncomfortably cold. It is cool to watch an action film on the big screen, like Star Trek or Pirates.

The big screen experience, just eat beforehand so no extra money on junkfood and go to the dicsounted matinees! :)

I prefer the comfort of my own couch no disruptions & can pause as you please.
Also redbox is a wayy more affordable price then paying alot more for movies on Netflix plus Netflix has its glichs every now and then & redbox will definitely not screw up on you. :)

The theatre experience is o.k. but I never been a huge fan of it. The lines, public restrooms, rude people, no pause button to take a bathroom break or get snacks. It’s just not all it’s cracked up to be. As for me I prefer the luxuries of home.

I enjoy my couch the best. Can sit back and relax and watch the movie. If I have to get up for a snack or to use the bathroom, I can pause the movie.

Though the Movie experience is well worth it( it has to be SO OVER THE TOP) each household must list their favs and have a vote as to which movie should be seen in the BIG screen. Some can be “save” for the at home cozyness and your own GREAT Popcorn( different seasonings). Also with the economy what it is, families DO look at what that experience IS…!

I think both are good, depending on the person, i think people go to the movies for fun activities, if there nothing else to do in there area. but if i have to choose i would choose home theater! because you can keep up with the changing technology. also you have the choice to adjust the quality and sound of the movie you are watching, and also you can control the noise around you. and most of all you can watch the movie when you want to……. and as meany time you want to for free!!!!!! so if you are broke stay home, if you have money to blow go out………..

When my 3 kids were younger, as a weekend dad, going to the movies was an entertainment staple and I really enjoyed discussing how they felt about the movie afterwards over ice cream. I would usually take them to a buffet before the movie so they could fill up and not be hungry at the theater where I would be forced to spend a small fortune on popcorn and candy, and still have hungry kids afterwards. As they approached their late teens and young adulthood, it became less about dad entertaining them, so we spent more time at my home watching movies in my small home theater. I personally find it much less stressful and more intimate. We make popcorn and and sit back and relax. Occasionally we still go to the theater if there is a movie they really would like to see but I much prefer the home theater experience, with family or a few friends, and especially by myself.

I still think the theater experience is much better, but the prices are getting pretty steep. I am a big movie buff who LOVES the theater, and I’d say they’re about $2 away from getting me to begin waiting for DVD releases.

$60 is a pretty crazy price for convenience, but remember that they have to cover for the fact that if you order it for a party, they lose more than just your ticket. Maybe if they were to bring it down to $40, it could work. Get about 10 people together and all pitch in $4 for your own private viewing.

There still is something magical about the larger-than-life theatre screen that ensures we continue to go to the movies. Seeing the latest “Transformers” movie on our large LCD screen is good; seeing it giant-sized after opening is the way to go. A couple of caveats: first, we usually do not go on opening night and, in fact, wait until the middle of the week when there are fewer people in the theatres; and, second, we rarely spend the extra money to see something in I-max 3D. On occasion, we will attend an I-max 3D movie if it’s in the I-max Dome theatre in our city. That experience makes it worth about double the price of admission.
The other aspect of attending a theatre is a social one. I get to talk about the movie with my friends and co-workers shortly after the movie opens. If I wait a month or two until it is available on DVD, most of my co-workers and friends have moved on to discussing another movie. If I pay $60 to see a new movie at home, I seriously doubt if many of my friends would be doing the same thing.
However, since the economy is impacting us as much as it is, we are now waiting for that DVD to be released later for home viewing and talk about sports, business and politics with our friends. In fact, we just rent the $1-type DVD instead of paying more for Blu-Ray or “hot new releases”. We’ve got to economize as much as possible.

I love going to the movies! But….simply cannot afford it. When we do go, it’s to the movie house that runs movies that are already on DVD, then we can enjoy the “experience” for a way cheaper price. Watching movies at home is always good, too, since you can choose when you want to watch a movie, or put it on pause to go pop more popcorn!

The movie theater experience used to be where it was at, until it cost $20.00 a person just to get in. If you want popcorn and a soda, add $10. Think I prefer my couch and sixty inch tv over the theaters nowadays

I refuse to pay movie theater prices so the home theater experience is what I do (besides, I’ve got a ton of money invested in equipment).

It’s hard to answer! I love the theater but I also love being able to lounge around my house and watch a movie.
I hate the theater because of people on their cell phones.. or those people who feel the need to ask questions or point out that a certain actor is hot. But I love the theater because of the big screen experience. But prices are outrageous!
But I’m going to have to choose my house. I love being able to lay out on my couch and relax in my pajamas.. Or hide under my blanket when I get scared. I also love that I can pause the movie if need be in order to go to the bathroom or refill a drink.
    Home theater trumps movie theater..

This isn’t even close. Home Theater. No noise and crunching from strangers, no cell phones going off. Can pause to go to the bathroom. More affordable. More comfortable – couch and PJs!

We love movies no matter where they are! We love to take the kids to the “cheap seat” movie theater down the road once or twice a month and we also love to rent a great movie and watch at home!

i think both are good, if you want to be the first to watch a good new realease then you would choose theaters but if you want to save money and wait for the blue ray or dvd version to come to the red boxs. then you would choose home theather, my choose is home theather first and big theather movie second.

I prefer watching at home. I have two children and at home, I can pause or rewind the video to explain the plot and help them better understand the movie. In the theater, it is often too loud and you run the risk of annoying other patrons.

At home you can eat what you want without paying a fortune at the snackbar.
You can pause the movie for a pottie break.

The good thing about the theater is the experience of the big screen and getting out of the house. It is a change of perspective. But I would still enjoy a movie at home more. Because 1) I can wear whatever I want 2) more comfortable 3) I can eat and drink whatever I want 4) I can talk to the other people that I want to watch the movie with. (not like talking all the time but the exclaiming and interaction.) 5) I can pick the time that I can watch.

I like both, but must admit the theatre is best. My large screen TV with surround sound can’t compare to the big theatre experience. Too bad that it’s so expensive, so I try to get passes for sneak previews whenever possible.
