TGIF! Every week on “Freebie Friday”, we offer our readers an opportunity to win free prizes. This week, you have a chance to win a free copy of a DVD or Blu-ray of your choice, just by answering a fun question.

One of the big movie industry news stories this week was Universal and Comcast’s abrupt decision to cancel their plans for $60 premium video-on-demand (VOD) rentals of the upcoming Eddie Murphy movie, Tower Heist. The great majority of commenters on this website said that there was no way they would pay anywhere near that price to watch a movie at home a few months early.

The drama surrounding Tower Heist got us thinking about the experience of watching a movie in theaters versus the experience of watching one at home.

To enter this week’s giveaway, simply answer the following question in the comments section below:

Which do you prefer: the movie theater or home theater experience?

Are the delicious popcorn and the thrill of being there on opening night worth the sticky floors and texting teens that come with the movie theater experience? Or do you prefer the comfort of your own couch and your own TV?

On Monday the 17th, we will randomly select a winner from the submitted comments. The winner will receive a free DVD or Blu-ray copy of a movie of their choice (to watch in your home theater!). Multiple comments will disqualify you, so please respond just once.

I like the BIG screen but the cost & finding time are hard now a days. We try & rent a movie a week it’s been nice to enjoy amovie with the family without someone kicking the chair or hearing someone talking durning the movie.

I prefer to sit at home more convenient, don’t have to dress up, or look good
Sit relax, slouch, burp, have cocktails, or do anything that makes me comfortable.
    Alot more cheaper to.
Only thing wrong is not enough movies that are recently out are in Redbox

Honestly, I prefer the home theater experience much better! With all the technology, I can have the exact same quality of video and audio that I can get in a theater, without the extreme theater prices. Plus, I can pause it if I want to get a snack or use the bathroom– and I don’t have to pay 12 dollars to pop a bag of popcorn in my microwave. Also, there’s no need to worry about teenagers acting ridiculous in the middle of the movie, no one talking through it, no crying babies or text messages beeping on someone’s cell phone. I haven’t been to a theater in ages– and I have no intention of going again. :)

I enjoy the big screen but too many movies are often not worth the $$, so I would prefer watching movies at home… not enough to pay $60 for it, though!

I prefer the movie experience, but I do not do it nearly as much as I would like. It is too expensive and people (usually) do not have enough common courtesy to be able to sit through the movie and enjoy it without being distracted.

I abosolutly love going to the movies. But the prices are a bit high. So I have set up an awesome home theater system at home. But, I still love going to the Movie theater as often as my budget will allow.

Hi! I love going to the movies and seeing the big screen especially movies that have special effects but, I also love my home theater at home where I can rent a movie and have the same experience as being in a movie theater which you don’t have to drive and spend gas.

Call me cheap but $8.00 popcorn and $4.00 drinks are tooooo much!! The convienence of being at home and turning it off if it’s a crummy flix or just tired and need to go to bed is why I prefer my home experience.

Big screen cost to much anymore. I’d rather sit at home and watch a good movie.

I have 5 kids. Definately stay at home and enjoy a movie. I can rent 3 movies and get some microwave popcorn, pizza, soda candies and not have to waste gas on driving. This just saved me about $50.

As much as I love the theater experience, I would prefer sitting at home. My decision is based on cost alone-I spent a total of $40.25 to one adult and one child ticket to see the Lion King in 3D, plus 2 large bottled waters and 1 small popcorn! Who wants to pay airport prices for food, when you’ve already dished out premium prices for movie tickets! Ugh!

Watching a movie in the comfort of my own home beats anything, can eat my popcorn and a drink if I wish, why deal with other peoples cell phones going off beepers ringing, talking laughing by other people stay at home and relax in the chair of my choice or couch if I prefer, although the theatre has alot going for it in terms of sound and picture quality, This reader is willing to sacrifice that for the home experience.

I really enjoying going out with friends for an afternoon/evening movie and dinner. The big screen is great but, as others have said, the cost is getting to be almost obscene. In fact, I can buy the DVD/Blu-ray when it is released for the cost of admission. Also, it typically costs more to buy popcorn and drinks than for the movie admission. Therefore, we watch at least ten times more movies on our home theater with DVDs and Blu-rays (usually from Redbox) than we do at the theater. The popcorn and drink is much more reasonable at home too.

Watching a movie at home all cuddled up with your significant other is the best. This always leads to “midnight cardio”!!! Everyone Wins. Especially redbox because thats where we rent it from.

I definitely prefer the movie theater (the screen, the popcorn, the atmosphere), but it’s just so expensive anymore.

I would much rather enjoy the movie theatre experience at home for several reasons. I have a family with mixed ages and we all dont usually agree on one movie, also the prices @ the movie theatre is outrageous!! Besides we have a few big screens so the kids can watch there movie and the adults can watch theirs. It works out great for everyone!!

Home Theatre, because I will be comfortable at home watching the movie without anyones phone going off.

I prefer to watch at home. The snacks cost less, the movie costs less, + the bathroom is available + clean if I need it. I have my own comfy space without the disruption of other movie goers + can wear my pj’s if I want to.

I personally prefer home, but it wasn’t always like that. We have become a less social society as a whole i believe. The tech world tuned us that way. Is it a bad thing, yes and no. If we still had the quaint neighborhood local theater, I would go there, but the movie plex houses are just a cluster of impersonal viewing rooms.

I like the theater for very visual films. Other than that home, because it’s cheaper.

Love going to the theatre. For me, that experience will never be replaced.
Something about sharing the experience with a room full of people- the audience buzzing before the start, giant speakers, the big screen, these things cannot be replaced. Being there at midnight on the opening day is almost magical.
I love watching things at home but I’ll always love goin to the movies!:)

The home theater experience is way better, one dollar movie, 50 cent popcorn,
and a 99 cent 2 liter coke bottle, you can also pause the movie for bathroom breaks.

Home Theatre Experience for sure, don’t have a place for it yet. But once I have a place of my own, I will definitely get all the hardware needed to have one myself.

Home Theatre Experience > Movie Theatre experience because…

    1. Movie in Theatre cost too much, excluding the drive there and back and gas money
    2. Babies and other inconsiderate people who make too much noises or kept on kicking your chair.
    3. Home Theatre experience I can stop the movie anytime for bio break or refil my drink or popcorn

I enjoy the movie experience at home on my big screen tv. It’s so much more convenient. It’s cheaper for a family of 6 to watch a RedBox movie at home, losts of snacks, ease of bathroom breaks and we don’t have to listen to other people talking on their cell phones or to each other like no one else is in the movie theater.

Much easier at home with the young ones, but still doesn’t compete with theatre experience. Popcorn, previews, big screen, big sound…. But also crinkling papers, talking, coughing, ridiculous prices, phone calls and text messaging. So it’s a trade-off.

I love going to the movie theater to see a flick that I have heard is a good one. Still nothing like the big ol tub of popcorn and the monster soda, and we like to use entertainment coupons to ease the cost of the experience.

Still a huge fan of Redbox rentals, especially to re-watch the movies that we really liked the first time!

With the awsome TV tech and amazing surround sound available today, I prefer the at home theater! It doesn’t take long for the home theater to pay for itself, considering the extreme prices of going to the theater these days!! Plus, I can pause and pee, and not miss a thing!!!

I like to stay at home and relax watching a good movie.
It’s cheaper to rent a movie and watch it at home where the whole family can enjoy.
You can save big time on the concessions by buying your munchies at the dollar store as opposed to buying them at the movies.

This is probably a skewed demographic asking redbox customers what they prefer more, but I agree with what everyone is saying. Although an overall better viewing experience, theaters are too expensive in every way and inconvenient too. If the movie is worth it (on a special occasion [i.e holiday] or a really big blockbuster [i.e. Harry Potter]) it is worth it to go to the theater. We may do this twice a year. However, we watch at least 3 movies a month at home. So, two in the theater vs 36 at home each year shows my preference.

I personally enjoy being in the comfort of my own home these days. The last time I went to the theater, the price for a bag of pop corn and a drink were ridiculous and there was nothing but rude loud teenagers who decided that talking and laughing loudly in the movie was the appropriate thing to do. It is frustrating to me to have this kind of experience and pay so much. I enjoy waiting and watching the movie on my big screen because I can pop as much pop corn as I want for a little price, I can pause the movie if needed, be in my pajamas and not have to worry about rude people around me!! Plus, for what blu-rays cost, it just seems cheaper for me to buy the movie, It seems like you spend more money going to the theater and buying junk!- now I can watch it as much as I like too!

With Blu-ray, a 50-inch plasma and a recliner, I prefer watching at home. If there is a movie that I really want to see I will go to the theater.
