Universal and Comcast are planning on charging $60 for premium video-on-demand (VOD) rentals of the upcoming Eddie Murphy movie, Tower Heist. For many consumers, sixty bucks seems like an outrageous amount to pay for the privilege of watching a movie at home a few weeks after it hits theaters.

How much is watching a recently released theatrical movie at home worth to you? $10? $20? Nada? We want to know what price point you think would be reasonable for studios and cable companies to charge.

On Monday the 10th, we will randomly select a winner from the submitted comments. The winner will receive a free DVD or Blu-ray copy of a movie of their choice. Multiple comments will disqualify you, so please respond just once.

Why should I pay for it?

I would pay the same value of an equivelent quality dvd or blu-ray.

I would pay $1.50. Similar to Redbox. For the convenience of not having to go out and get it, I’d pay an extra 50 cents.

eh, I guess they’re talking about before it comes out on DVD… like if it’s still in the theater? I guess I’d maybe pay about $10. That’s the cost of the average movie theater ticket, but more than one person could watch. I wouldn’t do it very often, though. Rather wait a month or two and watch it for $1 from redbox. ;)

I would rather wait than have to pay for it. There are plenty of other movies that have been released that I haven’t seen yet that I could watch.

I believe $4.00 is a fair price to pay. Considering the fact that gas prices are up. When you drive to the theatre you are burniing gas to get there and paying $8.00 to $10.00 per person for the movie. On the other hand you must drive to rent a
    movie.

    Thanks,

I would wait and pay the $1.00 redbox price.

I wouldn’t pay more than a movie ticket price. I know that multiple people can watch, but that shouldn’t matter at home. Plus, theaters have plenty of running cost. Whatever it is, I would rather download it illegally than legitimately for $60…

It doesn’t make sense in the slightest to RENT a movie for that much. It would have to at least be less that it would cost to buy the DVD once released.

I would only rent it for $15 or less since I only pay $7.75 to see it on a much bigger screen. I don’t know about everyone else, but movie theatre screens and sound are still better than my home system. I guess the concept makes sense for families or groups bigger than 2, but $60 is a rip off.

Wait for $1.00 RedBox. Or if that early = $2.00

Nothing. I’ll wait til it comes out on Redbox.

I would pay $10. The price of a movie ticket, then a $2 convenience fee for being able to watch it at home. Sounds fair to me. :)

I would pay the same as I always expect to pay with Comcast for a new movie. No more than $10.00 is the highest I’d be willing to go.

I would pay the max $10 to watch a movie a couple of weeks after it’s released. No more than what the theater charges. And it would seriously depend on the movie and how badly I want to see it!

    nguye605 [visitor]

I would pay $0.50. There is this movie rental place where I live that you get 50% off all movies if you pay a monthly fee. Old movies at the rental place is 2 for $1 (so $0.25 w/ the 50%). All new release is $1, so $0.50 w/ the 50% off. ;)

I would be willing to pay 5.00 for a movie on demand. The convienance of having it at home whenever I want is nice but truly not worth overpaying for. There is no movie that is so good that I would allow myself to be price guaged for.

To avoid theaters, the crazy cost of snacks, and to be able to pause the movie when i gotta pee- i’d pay $40. but i wouldn’t do it often!

$60???? Are the studios crazy??? You’re watching it AT HOME, the cost to them is miniscule in comparison to that cost per viewing, it’s not like you’re renting a VIP box at a concert or sporting event, they need a serious reality check. I would pay (maximum) up to $10 to see a movie a couple weeks before release, and upon release I wouldn’t go over $8, and at that they’d still be making a huge profit when considering the same price for a movie ticket in a theater has a huge chunk taken out for carrying costs. Studios take note: we may get caught up in the novelty of new services, but in this economy you’d do well to pay attention to the needs of the consumer.

I will wait thank you, $60.00 is way too much and with economy already in the toilet who could afford it in the average persons world. No way ever would i pay that much, I stopped renting from the movie stores years ago because I thought $3.50 was a rip off. Now there’s REDBOX and I rent movies regularly. Love the red box $1.00 movie’s. And the fact I can reserve them and pick them up on my way home is very convenient.

If you’re already paying monies to a cable company of some type you should have this as an access option in your plan say for an extra $5 a month for unlimited usage. In today’s economy it’s getting too expensive to go out to the movies so everyone is utilizing the watch it at home venue. The more readily available it is as with anything, the cheaper it becomes. If the movie companies can make monies from the cable companies, say a few cents or $1.00 per hit of viewing for their movie, they would still make $$$’s to add to their movie profits, probably even more.

$60 dollars is an outrageous price! I would pay extra, but only up to the price of a current matinee movie ticket, in my neck of the woods that is about $11 dollars.

I think $10 a month would be reasonable for unlimited newly released movies

15 bucks seems to reasonable considering more than one person could view it. 20 seems decent if it was a blockbuster film. I doubt that would really pay off in the end considering most would rather play the waiting game then pay 20 bucks for a film.
