Universal and Comcast are planning on charging $60 for premium video-on-demand (VOD) rentals of the upcoming Eddie Murphy movie, Tower Heist. For many consumers, sixty bucks seems like an outrageous amount to pay for the privilege of watching a movie at home a few weeks after it hits theaters.

How much is watching a recently released theatrical movie at home worth to you? $10? $20? Nada? We want to know what price point you think would be reasonable for studios and cable companies to charge.

On Monday the 10th, we will randomly select a winner from the submitted comments. The winner will receive a free DVD or Blu-ray copy of a movie of their choice. Multiple comments will disqualify you, so please respond just once.

Why would they charge $60? They may get one renter, and at $10 they may get 6 renters and if they charged $1 (like Redbox) they could get well over 600 renters and more and maybe triple their income.

I wouldn’t pay more than 10 bucks for a VOD..especially if it was my first time seeing it, just in case I didn’t like it =) && for the fact that I don’t even spend $10 to go see a movie in theater!

I wouldn’t pay for this service no matter how much it was, but $6 seems fair to me.

It would be a cold day in H*** when I would pay $60 for a movie rental. I agree with Rosemary’s math, seems extremely logical to me. I like red box’s $1.00 price!

I might pay $12 to $16 depending on how excited I was to see it at home. Definitely NOT $60…

I would not pay an outrageous price when I can wait until it comes out at Red Box. It just doesn’t make sense. The rental business is booming these days ,and believe me when I tell you that when I go to the movies on the weekends it’s a ghost town.
    Thanks,
    Ella,

I would not pay for this service, I get along just fine now waiting for things to come to Redbox, and if it is something I want to see really badly and it’s not at Redbox yet and is at the local rental store I just pay an xtra dollar there! ;) It is definitely not worth paying $60 for!

I would be willing to pay $10.00. If it was more than that, I wouldn’t do it. It would have to be a really good movie to pay even $10.00 for it. Otherwise, I’d wait until it came out for rent on Redbox. I am not a big movie buff. I usually rent 2-3 a month.

I wouldn’t pay more than $8. I mean theaters cost that much. Now $5 or less would be much better more like ppv. I normally prefer the $1 red box price

I wouldn’t pay so much money for one movie!

I love, love, love, movies!!But, I don’t know if I would pay even ten, when I can wait to get it at Redbox. I was so excited when Redbox was started. Like someone else said, I can wait until it comes out at Redbox!!!

Considering the ever riseing cost of going to the movies, which is often claimed to be due to piracy ( no rediculouse salaried executives and actors…) many opt for the conviniance and cost of a home movie rental. The only draw back of this is the inability to converse with friends and family who’ve seen said movies in theatres, yeilding a possible spoiler. So some may be motivated to “rent” these at home pre-dvd releases, but the assumption would be at or below theare cost. For an individual that means about $10. However “at home viewing” may allow you to cram as many friends as you can into your living room, thus the rental could be justified to be above theatre cost. So, for those who don’t wish to see the movie on the big screen and have the privilage of viewing it at home perhaps $30-40 may fit.

Of course one could charge friends and family to recoup the cost : P

the same price as a regular movie ticket…getting volume/greater number of customers usually brings in the most dollars

Redbox is my buddy. I never rent off of the dish. I always wait for my buddy to have the movie for me. I don’t usually have to wait too long, and if I want to keep it for a few days longer, it’s only a dollar a day. It just doesn’t get any better than that!!!!!

It would be wise marketing on the heels of Netflix’s price-hike lunacy, perhaps even a loss-leader, for cable companies to offer a streaming service at no additional cost. The name of the game is “subscribers.”

$60?!? …No, sorry, don’t think so. If it costs over the price of a DVD (list price, even, let’s say $20-$25) they’d be insane in my book. And they’d better let me keep a recording of it, none of this DVD-Recorder “Do Not Copy Flag” lockout crap. Sorry, if you’re broadcasting it to my TV, I should be able to record it.

There’s no movie in the last few years I’ve had to go see opening day, or even opening week. I’ve taken the wife and kids to a couple – Night at the Museum, some of the Pixar releases. Last time it cost over $60 for the four of us, admission plus concessions, and I had a free ticket for one of us. THAT is why I stopped going to movies – not because of the big-screen HDTV or Blu-Ray. Hell, I just got into that a month or so ago, finally replacing the 32″ JVC CRT with a 42″ Plasma. Reactivated the Netflix streaming and we’re enjoying finding old shows on it.

Sorry, Hollywood, it’s gotta be a hell of a movie to get me in the theater, otherwise I can wait for disc…

I would not pay anythingto see a movie a few weeks after ithit the theaters. And definitely not $60! I could see it at the movie theater for less than that. I’d wait until it came to redbox.

I would maybe pay $10 for a movie that I was really looking forward to seeing, but never $60! That is ridiculous.

Minimum would be $10 – $20. I’ve only gone twice this year to a movie theater, because prices are too high. I just either catch up on a movie from Redbox or Netflix. Even though Netflix has increased it’s prices, I do stream a lot of movies from my PS3 and watch a new release with DVD in the mail. But if I have to wait a few months for a New Movie to come to DVD, then I have no problem waiting.

i probably wouldn’t pay for it unless it was my fav actor or something. I don’t pay to see movies now, i win tickets or go to $2 theater (rarely).

I would never pay $60. $60 is 2 redbox moives, dinner for my friend and breakfast the next morning. Of course I’m the Chef.

I wouldnt pay $60 or even $10 for a movie when I can wait for it to come out in Redbox and pay just $1. I guess I have just become a bargain shopper since the economy went south.

I wouldn’t pay for this at all. If there’s a movie I REALLY want to see, I’ll pay $6 for the matinee and go see it on the big screen. Otherwise, I’ll either get it from BBE or Redbox with a free rental code or my public library. I rarely even pay $1 for movies. They’re not good enough to warrant the gas it takes to drive around the corner.

If it’s a movie that’s still in the theater, I’d pay $15. I’d still be saving money on the cost of the tickets, plus I wouldn’t have to pay the lame prices for snacks and stuff.

$60.00!!! I don’t even go to the theater anymore due to the expense. For VOD to compete with rentals, I think $2.00 is a reasonable price since you wouldn’t have to drive to pick it up or return it

No… I wouldn’t pay that much… I would wait til it came to redbox.

I think $30 would be a fair price if you had three kids and two adults at home you would safe money on tickets and food and i’m guessing its a 24 hr rental.

I have Blockbuster access so I would wait until it’s out on Blu-ray or get it on redbox. I Bo longer go to the theaters the price is ridiculous.
I also have HBO, STARZ and EPIX. So I probably wouldn’t pay any more for the service. I blow $165 a month for programming and a few on redbox, that it for me.

I wouldn’t pay more than $18.25. The way I see it I have a pretty good movie set up at home with a nice projector, so I am not missing out too much on the movie experience, but I would be able to watch it with my wife and family without breaking the bank by going to the theater.

  35. Visitor [Join Now]

I would pay up to $10 given the price to go see the movie in the theater and the VOD will allow me to see it with my entire family in my own home.

Redbox is a great deal any way you look at it though.

I MAY pay up to $5 for the rental, depending on the movie, but not anything $8-$10 it costs to go when it’s released in the theater. $60 is outrageous!

4 or 5, not 60. Better yet I would wait until it came to redbox.
