Fox Launches Mall Ad Retail Promotion

Fox is hoping that tech-savvy smartphone owners will warm up to a new retail promotion in malls across the country.

Users of the service can download an app called Fox Movie Mall, which they can then use to directly buy DVDs and Blu-rays advertised on walls at shopping centers.

The app reads QR codes in wall ads and directs users to a secured website to purchase their chosen movie.

Titles include the upcoming Alvin And The Chipmunks: ChipwreckedX-Men: First Class, Alien, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Sons of Anarchy, Rio, Gulliver’s Travels and Diary Of A Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules.

The promotion is a follow-up to a smaller rollout that Fox tested in the UK last year. Participating malls include Taubman Centers in Los Angeles; Fairfax, Va.; Short Hills, N.J.; Stamford and Framington, Conn. and 26 others.

Mary Daily, president and chief marketing officer of 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, said the following about the new promotion:

“We are constantly looking for new opportunities to reach consumers and this technological advancement has allowed us to further engage with them by offering a convenient and fast way to get the movies they love,”

Will you be whipping out your smartphone (and your virtual wallet) to participate in this promotion, Insiders? How well do you think this idea will go over with shoppers?

No thanks. This appears to appeal mainly to impulse buyers, which is not me.

This doesn’t even seem like something for impulse buyers. Impulse buyers would walk into the store and buy it right there! I for one would not use this at all!!

This is amazing. I’ve been waiting years for something like this. My movie budget is going back up now.

No thanks! These little code scanners are just another tool for obtaining our user information.

I believe the fine print reads ” the information we gather and share is to know our customers buying habits, and products they buy, to serve them better.”

Which roughly translates to: “We want to know what you buy so we know what companies we can sell your info to, so they can spam you like a stalker”
