Like a nervous engaged couple, soon-to-be-joined Dish Network and Blockbuster are looking to delay their formal union just a bit, according to a recent filing with the US Bankruptcy Court in New York.

The companies’ formal closing date was supposed to be April 21, which has now been extended to May 5. Dish’s reasoning behind the delay is that it wants more time to make assessments and decisions regarding which of Blockbusters 1,700 current locations, will remain open.

Dish is also seeking another 90 days to decide which current BB store leases it will assume and which ones it will reject.

Has Dish bitten off a bit more than it can chew with its acquisition of Blockbuster, or are these delays just part-and-parcel of a major transaction of this type? Visit the comments and weigh in with your opinion.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see the closing pushed back even further. This is the slowest quarter and Blockbuster must be losing massive cash each month and I am sure that Dish doesn’t want to be responsible for that themselves.

If they could extend the closing to the end of June, I am sure they will be much happier.

I don’t go to blockbuster any more and I don’t have a dish so I could not care less.
