‘Tis the season for raising movie rental prices, it seems. After Netflix’s September increase and Redbox’s four-day-old price hike, Blockbuster Express has announced that it will make the limited test pricing that it began last year permanent across its entire kiosk base.

Beginning November 8, new release DVDs will cost $3 the first night and $1 per night during the first four weeks of release. The first night will drop to $2 after the 28-day mark. $1 per night pricing kicks in at 90 days.

The new pricing scheme should help BB Express keep its supply of day-and-date new releases, as well as please studios such as Warner who are battling to lengthen delay windows on new movie rentals.

Justin Hotard, VP and GM of Blockbuster Express parent NCR Entertainment offered the following on the new pricing:

“We are making this change based on feedback from our customers as well as to address higher operating costs currently facing the industry,”

Will BB Express see success with this new pricing scheme? Is a day-and-date new release rental worth three bucks to you?

Sorry, but there’s no way I’m paying $3 to rent a new release. Blockbuster is setting themselves up for another bankruptcy.

I wonder if all those people crying about the $0.20 Redbox increase who said they’d go to Blockbuster Express will come crawling back to Redbox now.

BB is nuts..This could only work if Redbox was doing something similar. With an option for me to hit either one, there is no way I’m using BB.

BB can kiss my ass. They will never learn. Greedy bastards.

    Does it really matter?
The nearest BBE kiosk might as well be in the next solar system–it is so far away!

Yea, I have 2 BBX to about 20 Redboxes. The only reason I like BBX is more free codes, and you can enter the code online (so you can keep trying until one works).

@Jim you give a redbox Insider BBE envy! ;)

No Sheetz [What a stupid name] nor 7-elevens in within 15-miles of my area. Don’t you need to buy a handgun before entering either? ;)

I agree. BBX has great promo codes. I get my 10 at a time by e-rewards opinion site. I love reserving on line with a code and truely wish Redbox had the same deal. But, I won’t be spending $3 for a new “flame” release since I can get the same movie for $1.20 at redbox promo code or no

Saw your comment about e rewards? What exactly is this and where do you 10 free codes? Would appreciate any info on this. Thanks

i AM READY to come back to redbox..I tried netflix but too much money…20 is not that much except that It is far away so If I keep them for 2 days it is still less expensive than netflix..I do not know where bb is anyway…

Whoever is running BB express must be insane. Pay $3 at their box or pay $1.20 or $1.50 at a Redbox? So I can get 2 at Redbox for the price of their 1.

Where did these people get a degree in management or economics? Stupid.

Well hold on now everyone…. The $3 for a movie thing worked well for the blockbuster brick and mortar stores, so maybe… oh wait, thats right, it put them into bankruptcy…. Shoot…

…”We are making this change based on customer feedback…” Yes, all seven of their customers came together and said, please mister NCR, won’t you please rip us off by raising the price by 300%?? Please good sir, if you care about us, you’ll listen and raise your prices to the point where we can’t afford to get two or three movies a night like we used to.

I agree with most that this is insane. First I am not going to pay $3.00 period, second you want men to figure out which one of the tiers the movies is in before I rent it. BS BYE BYE BBE.

I don’t get why Blockbuster , Netflix, and Redbox don’t work together and pressure the studios to stop raising their prices and telling the renters how and when and how much they can rent their movies for. The studios don’t have the power, the retailers do. They need to flex their muscles.

The studios have WAAaaaaaaaaayyy more money than Redbox/BB/Netflix. They have way more lawyers, way more money and way more power. Ask the theater owners.

OMG, $3 just to watch a movie a month before everyone else? No thanks. If I waited this long to see a movie, I can wait another 28 days with no problem. :)

They can only get away with this in areas where the availability of Redbox kiosks are limited. For example, they have an arrangement with Duane Reade (who dominates NYC) so in that locale it is like 25:1 BBE to Redbox Kiosks …

Sad. $3 a night is why I hardly ever rented from any brick and mortar video rental store…I think it’s ridiculous…I just waited until it came on TV or my mom or brother bought it (not too smart on their part!). I love Redbox, and as long as they stay under $3.00, they have my loyalty!!!!

I just love BBE’s pricing structure.. Not sure if I have it right, but:

Day/Date release titles – $3 for first night
Normal titles up to 90 days old – $2 first night
Titles older than 90 days – $1 per night
Titles which begin with letter C – $3.50/hr
Titles featuring Matt Damon – 0.15/week
    hmmm… some of that doesn’t seem accurate…

You forgot the DVDs that BBE will *pay* you to buy. Like every unplayable disk that was shipped mail-order or was in its B&M locations that it stuck members with. ;)

It’s true that BBX has way more promo codes (good for $1 rental) than redbox does. Then they change to Hot List ($3) for new releases a few months ago for 28 days, then go down to $1 after that. That’s already a turn off for me. Now they want to make it way worse to $3-$2-$1 pricing structure. I’m not going to wait for 90 days to get new movies. So long BBX! I guess I’ll be going to redbox now despite the 20 cents increase, which is still way better than $3.

Bye Bye Blockbuster. There are way many more Redboxes in my area anyway. Thought BB was going to make a comeback….so much for that idea. They can join Netflix when they fall…..again!

Have never tried a BB. No kiosks close enough anyway and after reading all these comments I’m sticking with streaming (even if they are older movies) or using RedBox as I have done.

People might thing this higher price for be releases is to much, but BB gets much more new releases faster than red box. I will definitely pay the three dollars to see a new release the week it is out than wait the extra few weeks that red box has to wait to get it and then pay the lower price.

What a lot of people are not realizing is Blockbuster Express already has $2.99 “Hot Titles.” The higher price is only for the first night, then it’s $1 each additional night. The actual breakdown works like this:

$3 – Movies within 28 Days of Release (Netflix and Redbox don’t have these)
$2 – Movies within 90 Days of Release
$1 – Movies After 90 Days of Release

With that said, my local BBX machines can’t seem to ever scan movies in and send you a receipt when you return them so I’ve stopped using them altogether.

BBE discs are always scratched and have rug rat smudges all over them. I only use them for the free codes. If I was to actually pay them money for a disc, well, this only delays the time period that they get my money. I don’t care if it’s delayed a year, I can wait.

Too much! The parent company (Dish) assumed too much of a debt load and is trying to drive people to the main products of their core business. Too bad. See ya.

Sorry Block Buster X I will stop going. Don’t use it much any way. Now I do have Block Buster two out at a time. And get two free movies when I take them back to the store. I get 16 movies a month for $16.50.Not bad at all. If they change it a little bit ok. But if they do a NetFlix job. I will be gone.

kind of smart really. They get $3 from those willing to pay it. (Not me)
while still having plenty of $1 movies available for the tightwads.

    Me ?

Havent used a kiosk in months. Specific trips 2+ miles kills it for me.

I watch a lot more streaming than I thought I would. Actually enjoy it more than the mediocre new releases.

I have a kiosk about 2 miles away and it faces south so you can’t see the screen during the day. Can’t rent if you can’t see. I would not pay $3. I can go to amc and see it in a theater for $5.

So in other words, they did not learn from the first time arround when $3 for new realises didnt work, and that was for a 2 day rental from a store, not from a damned machine that dosnt have heating or a gaurnetee to be there or a free rental

BIGDOG & others, you echo my exact feelings!!! Gas here in Hollywood, Fl $3.35/reg. That still sucks !! Food prices=UP. Seriously, a $.20 redbox increase is “livable.” 3 bucks-well like I showed you-that’s a gal. of gas. Ya know, I have a ROKU streemer, I pay $8 to BOTH netflix & HULU+; I could give a bad crap about a new release.
Thank God I only pay $30/mo to Uverse for a net connection. I use that for my V.O.I.P. PH & MY TV I am not advertising, But, I’m saving big time by having both that & an ANTENNA TV (OTA) for FREE TV. My fellow AMERICANS, we must unite & band together and NOT BUY what big business thinks they can shove down our throats. Look, I may be 60, yet, I do remember studying inGRAMMAR school about the “power of the purse.”if we don’t buy it-what do ya think the prices should do ??? Sure 1 theater ticket goes 4 $11 down here. Screw that! So ? why don’t the kids fight that ?????
You tell me….thanks for reading Don, from Fl. (6:30PM Nov7

No I won’t be paying that, besides Family Video is cheaper. And we have Dish Network and starting in the next 2 or 3 months, were gonna join Blockbuster’s mail in service that Dish is offering for only $10 per month. For that, you get unlimited dvd, blu ray, and video game rentals and keep them as long as you want with no late fees and you mail them back once you are finished with them and you go to their site to make new selections for them to send you.

most new movies that come out on dvd are still out at the discount theatres for 1 or 2 bucks, so I’d much rather go see the movie on the bigscreen than to fork over more money to BBX. they will not get my business.

blockbuster is chargeing the same price for a new movie as in the store, big woop, try to rent that movie on tv and it will cost $4 or $5 dollars. Also you can go rent a new movie sooner with blockbuster instead of waiting 28 days to see it for a 1.20 with red box. I agree with the discount movie theater idea, but if the movie costs $2 and the snacks cost $10, plus the gas to get there, you are not saving anything!
